Bass fishermen to don’t keep bass. They practice catch and release. They are a self policing group of anglers. Walleye fisherman practice catch and eat…unless the regulations say otherwise. I promise there will be plenty of launch boats and deep v walleye rigs with limits of the newly legal smallmouth. DNR won’t let you keep walleyes, so I expect bass to be kept because walleye guys feel they are entitled to a meal of fish.
I know netting is a problem, but if walleye fishermen let half the legal fish go that they caught, I doubt there would be much of an issue on Mille Lacs. Slot limits only exist because walleye fisherman don’t practice catch and release. #itsthetruth
“You mean like Rainey, Vermilion, Crane, Green, Upper Mississippi?”
All great bodies of water. I’ve fished them all. But the trophy opportunity on Mille Lacs is second to none. I’ve caught more 20″+ fish in one day on Mille Lacs than I have in a lifetime fishing all other lakes combined.
People come from around the country to catch these old, giant smallmouth. This lake is truly living in the “good ole days” of bass fishing. You can’t go anywhere else and expect to 5 pounders (or larger) with frequency.
It needs to be appreciated. It needs recognition.
“Actually walleye fishermen practice selective harvest. They keep mostly “eaters” and let bigger fish go. It’s a pretty sound practice.”
Incorrect. Walleye fisherman are force fed selective harvest based on changing slot limits.
“Limits if set correctly, are imposed to keep fish populations at a desired level, if the lake can handle 6 fish limits so be it, you don’t have to keep fish but don’t tell anybody else what they have to do as long as they are following the laws.”
“If set correctly” is the key part of this statement. Again, I have no problem with anybody keeping fish to eat. I do it all the time. But don’t get this new regulation confused as a strategic move for the fishery and the health of the lake. The DNR has stated it doesn’t understand the role of these predators in Mille Lacs. It’s a strategic move to keep the walleye community off the DNR’s a$$ for a few minutes.
Will – I’m not at all worried about the bass guys keeping fish. I’m worried about every slip bobber and lindy rig bass in the legal limit immediately getting boxed and taken home out of spite. Over the course of a couple summers, how many pounds of fish will that be? I’m willing to bet that it’s alot.
I’m not attacking “all walleye guys” or the DNR directly. I am a Mille Lacs fanatic regardless of species. I fish Mille Lacs all year for walleyes. I just don’t like how this bass limit feels like a quick decision made by the DNR to make the walleye die hards happy.
Well…the walleyes are gone so I guess the next step is to wipe out the best smallmouth fishery on the planet.
I blame this new liberal bag limit of bass on walleye fisherman feedback and DNR ignorance. I suppose all the Muskie should be filleted too. There isn’t anything wrong with keeping a few fish, but they mentality of the walleye community is ridiculous. It’s the reason slot limits were imposed. This all revolves around the fact that every “legal” walleye pulled out of any lake is immediately kept. I bet less than 5% of legal walleyes are actually let go.
It’s sad that the bass fishery is being set up for destruction. Look at the regs…anything look familiar? Take out the young year classes of fish and protect the large spawning females? Oh yeah…you can keep one “over” fish.
The bass and muskie fishing communities across the country long ago realized that catch and release is ok. Why can’t the walleye folks get on board? Even if you can only keep 2 fish, I challenge you to find a lake outside of Mille Lacs with as much fish catching or trophy potential. I fish Mille Lacs all year for every species in the lake. This new limit will not keep me from fishing walleyes. I don’t feel entitled to a limit of “keepers” when I get to the ramp. I enjoy catching fish and Mille Lacs is world class for many different species.
I have the Strikemaster bibs. I’m 6’1 and 220 and they fit perfect with a pair of jeans. I would assume those are close to the same size.
HT makes a quality product at a great price. Check out their “Polar Lites” line.
i dont really know what to do with Marks info. I’m gonna head for the red door. His graph leads me to believe its the best idea.
I’m not sure if advancements have been made with the Marcum units, but they were notorious for messing up Vexilars. i think it was based on power. If you are going to spend time in a big shack with other people, bring your Vexilar or Humminbird. You can fish in harmony. If you want to start an argument about feedback, bring your Marcum.
That being said, if you are going to fish by yourself or with other Marcum users….have at it.
I’ll use whatever is working that day. I’d prefer to catch em on spoons, but if they want the dead stick or a big sucker on a tip up I certainly won’t shy away from either one. If I’m in WI, I’ll do all 3 at once!
Wow. Unreal. Wow.
Dan – Keep it up. Keep catching those fish. It’s hard earned money in your pocket and great food for the dinner table.
I have the Navionics app for my IPhone. It’s an awesome ice fishing tool for $9.99. It’s a real time GPS with all the mapping features for the lakes you fish. Plus you can save all your “hot spots” so you can find them another day. Good detail and mapping for the price. Responsible for the best walleye ice fishing day of my life.
I understand that people can be upset about the fish that are taken from our popular bodies of water. But please keep in mind how many guides/outfitters from every premier lake and river in Minnesota are doing the same thing. 1 fisherman is barely a drop in the bucket. When you think that each resort on Red or LOTW is keeping hundreds of fish everyday, or that the guys on Mille Lacs or the Perch Patrol on Devils are keeping fish on a very regular basis, this really seems to be small potatoes in my book. It’s 1 guy who posts about it on an internet chat board. I can’t imagine how upset you would be if every guide or hardcore river rat told you about the legal limits of fish they keep each year.
He is a guide…that means people pay him to take them fishing and keep fish. Not the only guide using this website. Everybody take a deep breath.
Ha ha…yeah. You ride the bus Sunday, fish Monday and Tuesday, and ride the bus home tuesday night. Just in time to get out of a dinner date.
Gotcha…Well I wish I could say that this was an issue for me, but I’m yet to catch more than 1 walleye at a time out there. I’ll have to move off the cribs and try some different areas.
The signs at the boat launch say 2, but the printed regulations say 3.
Crappie bite on the southwest cribs has been very predictable. 45 minutes before dark and then the switch turns off. Nice fish. Glad you can only keep 10 or guys would load the bucket.
Sunfish are a dime a dozen out there. More than you can catch. The average size is roughly the palm of your hand. 1 or 2 years and you are going to have a bunch of nice fish out there.
I haven’t yet gone looking for the walleyes. I’m not exactly sure where to start or how to go about it, but I’ll give it a shot and see what I can find. Any advice would be helpfull.
Have any of you caught walleyes off the cribs? It seems to be a panfish thing to me.

Talked to my uncle x-mas eve, he lives on the south bay of Cedar- said they are catching walleyes right in front of his house in 6-8 fow on tip ups with shiners.
There are so many tip ups out there this week it’s crazy…I think the fishing has slowed down a bit with all the pressure. I’ll try some different water tomorrow. Maybe one of the humps in front of there.
