    After seeing last years episode I am planning on heading from Minnesota out to Henry’s Lake the week before, or week after, Thanksgiving (depending on ice conditions). Also plan on making plenty of closer trips to the surrounding states and Canada.

    I’ve also had the issues you listed above except mine were not the mittens but the gloves. When the first pair tore I thought it was more of a fluke or I could have caught it on something but the second pair tore the first trip out in the same area. I will be looking for a different brand of gloves as well.

    Arville Lake had a moderate winterkill in the 2013-2014 winter according to the DNR site. I seen quite a few dead fish that spring, mainly rough fish, with a few gamefish mixed in as well. They did a winterkill assessment and still caught some crappies, perch, pike, and 1 walleye. It may be worth a look again with some survivors. I haven’t fished Big Swan for a few years but have heard people catch some crappies and walleyes out there during the winter. I would say Big Swan would be your better bet of the two to get on some fish.

    I may head up that way sometime at the end of the week. I’ve never been up there before so I’m curious how deep of water you were finding them in?

    How much snow did you find on the ice?

    Haven’t checked any of those lakes but Fremont had 4 inches of ice today in about 5 FOW 50 feet from shore.

    I’ve caught a few walleyes on the top lake mentioned near that hump in the middle and some fish in other areas as well. There is usually quite a few people out there fishing for walleyes and pike near that hump and out from the boat access. Use caution near the river and creek on the north end. It seems to be a low light bite out there and not much for weeds in the lake.

    That is correct. The BWCA lakes open January 1st while lakes outside of the BWCA open on January 17th this coming year.

    I agree with you 100% that safety is the #1 thing to look out for on this early ice. In addition to many of the safety tips you have listed above one thing I have always done the first couple of trips out is to chisel out small holes on my way out, in addiction to using the chisel before every step, and stop and measure the ice. Sometimes it appears the ice is slightly thicker then it is and this way I know exactly how much ice I am on at all times. Just because it may hold you up doesn’t mean it is safe, nor smart, to keep walking on. With that being said I am hoping to be up on the ice in your area on the 28th or so, so I am looking forward to hearing ice updates over the next several days.

    I’ve heard of a few people getting out on the ice out in Colorado the past few days.

    @quintinbiermann1

    Thank you for the updates. One other thing I have been wondering on is the road right away laws for accessing bodies of water within the right away? I’m having a difficult time finding solid information whether right away access is still allowed or has been eliminated this past summer for certain/all areas from private land owners and townships?

    It does come on, as the buttons will light up, but the screen will not display anything.
