Beautiful! It just looked a lot like my favorite Canada hangouts.

February 25, 2020 at 4:46 pm #1918001My 50 Yamaha had a shake like that also but it was just when the trim was all the way down. I would just bump the trim up off the stop and it would go away.
That does make it a bit better, but it’s still there..

February 25, 2020 at 1:31 pm #1917943Its plenty fast enough for me with the 40. Also the 40 has an option of emergency rope start, I don’t think you get that with an Etec 50.
Looks like Lac Seul?

February 25, 2020 at 11:14 am #1917889If the deal works out (fingers crossed) I’ll post an update on this thread. One dealer I talked to that is really close to me said he sells them and he never sees them come back. I just checked and there’s two dealers really close to my cabin as well.
That sure sounds like a reason to seal the deal. Best of luck getting it all done!

February 25, 2020 at 8:20 am #1917828I have a 75 Yamaha Tiller on my 2017 175 Competitor. I do like the motor for the most part, but I wouldn’t mind trying a Suzuki at some point. My Yamaha doesn’t idle as smoothly as I thought it would have, it does shake the boat a bit when trolled down to the very bottom end of the rpms and always has. The Yamaha was on the boat when I bought it off the showroom floor, if it had a Suzuki, I would have bought it as well. The major differences in the two that that I saw are that the Yamaha runs a timing belt, and the Suzuki runs a timing chain, and the Suzuki is said to be a bit lighter but I don’t know how much.
If you can save a pile of money with the Suzuki, I’d run with it!

Will my 2004 Ranger 3 bank charger be adequate for AGM batteriesWe have no idea what the specs are on your “2004 Ranger 3 Bank charger”.
For all we might know, it could be 208/210v, 3 phase and we don’t know the amperage capacity.DO you have a clue how to search it out on the web?
Wow! Nice reply… I guess there may be someone who may know what the specs may be on a 3 bank charger that came on a 2004 Ranger, Or maybe a “Is there a model number or Spec’s listed on the charger anywhere that we can break down?”, might have been a better reply…Obviously you don’t know and felt the need to belittle someone at their expense. This is supposed to be a place to help folks and share knowledge, not beat your chest and let everyone else know how smart you think are.
Now “Walinutz”, do you have the model number or spec’s of that 3 bank charger handy so we can try to figure out what breed of batteries it’ll work with?
Good day

February 20, 2020 at 11:21 am #1916648I’d recommend Abrams Lake Lodge in Sioux Lookout. It has everything you mentioned including a sandy beach. Camp (tent or RV) or Cabin and very reasonable. There are others like Sandy Point Lodge and Winoga Lodge in the area as well, but I have not tried them.
February 20, 2020 at 11:16 am #1916643Fine on the lake. 20-24” everywhere. The usual ridge activity. People starting to venture on the river, fishable spots are few and far between.
When you say these “fishable spots are few and far between” is that because of ice conditions? Isn’t this a GIANT lake? Is the lake fishable in the summer? I had heard it’s tough to summer fish because of its size and being so shallow that the waves are HUGE?
So what is the lowdown on Ice fishing it? The use of a guide for safety? Can you get on the lake with a wheel house?
Sorry if I seem ignorant, just trying to learn more about the lake.
Thanks,

I have a G1 SI Helix 7 and I believe it has the ability to run in Ice Mode… I’ll have to verify that, but I believe there is a “flasher” screen.
February 20, 2020 at 9:18 am #1916598I run 2 Group 31 AGM’s on my Ulterra and have yet to run them dead in a single day using the Ulterra quite a lot moving about and being “anchored up”. I also have a standard lead-acid deep cycle battery for starting and running my electronics. That battery is 3 years old and I may replace it with an AGM this year as well. My AGM’s are “Duracell” brand and I bought them at Batteries Plus for about $200 each last year. I think the total with tax and core and enviro charge was $440 out the door.
Certainly more money for AGM’s, but far better performance, certainly more durable and much better longevity and replacement. I’ve used AGM’s elsewhere and have always been pleased with their value. I have one in an ATV that is going on 10 years and still performing fine. It seems like they can go dead and stay dead and cold/froze and not sustain the damage a lead-acid battery will in those conditions…at least that is my observation.
I did buy the Minnkota “alternator” that will allow me to charge/isolate my 2 trolling batteries off of the charging system on my outboard, but as I said I have yet to have a day on the water where I have needed it. I will probably still install it for good measure but it’s not a priority. As a side note, why the HECK doesn’t Minnkota build the features of the “alternator” unit into their high end chargers? I know that it is a whole nother discussion, but worth asking. Sure, then they couldn’t sell you the alternator unit, but I’d pay more for a charger with that feature built in for sure.
February 20, 2020 at 8:50 am #1916589I have a G1 SI Helix 7 and a G2 DI Helix 7 and I’m interested in using the auto chart feature on the G2 in some places I fish in Lac Seul (Ontario). I do have Lakemaster Chips in both, had the Ontario chip (Lac Seul) in the G2 and the Midwest chip in the G1 unit. I switched them because I use the G2 on the ice here in MN and WI and the chip obviously has better contours than the base map and the Ontario chip wouldn’t cover this area. Now, I will install a blank 32gb chip in the G2 unit when I fish Lac Seul using and saving auto chart data on my favorite spots, and navigate with the G1 unit with the Ontario chip. I only wish the chips were easier to change out (tweezers), and QUESTIONS: is the blank chip max set at 32gb for the G2 Helix 7 unit? How long / how much data will it store? I assume all of the Marks/Icons/waypoints/routes I have saved are saved internally and won’t be lost when I install the blank chip?
Thanks,
LM
February 20, 2020 at 7:36 am #1916573I set mine up and I sure like it. I have a G2 DI Helix 7 (same as yours I believe) that I use in the summer as well as a G1 SI unit on my boat. I opted to convert the G2 to ice for winter use, and may do the same with the G1 at some point. I also have an old 3 color SiTex FL-5 that still works well too.
I have only used the Helix on the ice on one outing so far, but found the standard graph sonar screen and that same screen with zoom to be my preferred screens to use. I did use the flasher type screen and found it to work, but man the graph just seemed to be the best for me. I do not have mine on the H’Bird shuttle or bag, I was given a Vexilar shuttle that works for now but I’m still looking for the ultimate solution here, which may or may not be the H’Bird shuttle.
I did use an FLX-28 Vexilar on an outing, and it really worked well. Based on the two single outing, and that I already own the Helix, I see no reason to spend the money on a Vexilar at this point although they are really good useful units.
Besides the initial purchase of the Helix 7, for the ice I have $75 invested in the ice transducer, $20 in a 9ah battery, and $15 into a power cord for a grand total of $110. Harbor freight sells a real nice computerized 4 amp charger (Viking) that works real well for charging it and other batteries for like $20-$30, and it came with a nice charging lead plug in that I wired into the shuttle I have. My battery life seems to be pretty good, I got down to 33% after about 7 hours of fishing with my screen brightness on 5 and a “night”/black screen background, and I left the GPS on the entire time. I’m sure as the battery ages, it’ll give up sooner but this seems to be pretty acceptable. I’d like to figure out a way to house my 18ah battery with the unit in an ultimate shuttle setup but that remains to be figured out yet.

February 18, 2020 at 10:27 am #1916135Scored a Vexilar shuttle from a buddy that didn’t need it. The Helix 7 is a little big for it but works (doesn’t zip fully in front). This is a DI G2 GPS unit with the Ice transducer. Any idea if this same transducer will work with my Helix 7 G1 SI GPS unit? This past weekend was the first time I tried the Helix on the ice, and I was amazed! I used/tried a Vexilar FLx-28 (same buddy above) a week or so ago and I’ll take the Helix over it based on my experience. I’d still like to develop a shuttle that protects the Helix a bit better, whether it’s in a pail, bag or an ammo can with the battery but for now, I have ordered a “foam hat” screen protector for it for use during transport. I may convert the Gen1 to Ice to have another unit, I also have an older 3 color SiTex FL-5 set up for the ice (Using a Vexilar Transducer) that works well too.

November 3, 2007 at 1:38 pm #15936I would think the 204 would be an excellen round for yotes. I know guys taking them with a 17 hmr successfully and the 204 has a bit more than that.

November 3, 2007 at 1:21 pm #15934I shoot a 22-250 handloaded to a tad over 4000 fps. What is also effective is my Rem Supermag 12 ga loaded with 3 1/2″ Mag 00 buckshot as it will roll’em out to darn near 100 yards.

November 1, 2007 at 1:22 pm #15799Brad,
Great story, and a great read. This year, I bagged my personal best buck with a bow and it truly is a great feeling. I forwarded this story to my son who is 12 and just started hunting this year. He is a great shot with his bow but when we’ve been afield, he has done his share of missing shots which is completely fine to me. My new angle is to teach him to stay calm and maybe just observe that doe or small buck that comes in with no intention of shooting it. Appreciate the animal and what it does and how it behaves learning from its every move. I think your story will help me accomplish this with him as we manage our hunting properties and have great sucess with it.

August 5, 2007 at 1:37 pm #597118Yes, the rescue personnel has done a great job in what is a very difficult situation with the conditions and currents.
It was noted on national news about the good sumeritans diving in the water to help the trapped. I guess is certain parts of the country/world you can’t count on just anybody to help you out? Well, I guess we can be proud to be from where we are. I guess I wouldn’t think twice in that type or any other life threatening situation, reguardless of race, sex, religion, age, etc…I would be doing everything in my power to rescue folks specially in those first critical moments.
I had a situation where this happened to me. I was about an 1/8 mile trailing a small 4 door car. 3-4 deer ran out and the woman driving swerved losing control and rolling the car into a pond. I was in the pond and to the car in seconds, it was not sinking but was partially submerged. The woman was ok but badly shaken. I noticed an empty child seat in the back seat and I asked the woman (still trapped in the car) if her child was with her. She was so shaken she said that she didn’t know. Now my heart started pumping!!! The doors were jammed and the rear window was blown out, I feared that the child may have flown out in the rollover. I listened for crys, and nothing… My adrenaline was pumping so hard I physically tore a partially opened door off of the car to get the woman out. When I got her out, I got her phone number and called he home where her husband answered. I asked immediately if the child was there and he was like “who the heck is this and why would you ask that?”. I quickly explained the situation and he did confirm that their toddler was safely at home with him and his wife was going to work. After learning that the child was not in the car I felt some serious relief and felt like the rescue was complete.
For weeks after, my arms ached from torn/strained muscles from tearing the door off the car but there was a degree of satisfaction every time I felt the ache.
Sorry for the long read….
August 3, 2007 at 3:05 am #596638I would agree that this is not a time for political statements. Without even knowing what caused the failure I don’t know how anyone could. I realize that these comments are circulating through the media, but that doesn’t make it right but political gain from death and disaster seems to be easy prey for some. Stop and think a bit, there are still peoples fathers, mothers, children, loved ones etc still missing….is it really time to get political? I know I can’t bring my self to do it.
God speed to everyone affected by this insurmountable disaster.

August 2, 2007 at 2:27 am #596127As I sit here typing this, I have goose bumps and I don’t get them too often. I cross that bridge 2x per day and today I crossed it just minutes before it went down. I feel very fortunate to not have been involved in the unfortunate event that took place just behind me. At the same time my heart goes out to all who are affected by it and can only hope the loss of life and injuries are minimal. I guess it’s tough for me to invision how my family would function if one day I didn’t come home to them. Inevitably that will happen to some in our community here tonight and they are in my prayers.
God Bless
