Ok then, after reading this post, I believe my kids best walleye to date is actually a Saugeye? I hadn’t given it a thought before, just seen the white tip on the tail and said “Walleye”, but it does hove the sauger spots. In max size, are Saugeye more commonly closer to walleye or sauger. This one was 25+” 5 1/2#. Is that big for a saugeye or just nice?

A few have been across now, but not many. It’s about 3 plunks with the spud and your through. Maybe with the last couple of nights it added another inch or so. The snow blanket is really holding things back.

Not that I have heard yet, but I would bet someone will go across this weekend. Not me though to much water & current for my liking. When the comercial fishermen start crossing with atv’s is when I’ll go.

Here in Iowa, Flatheads are still harvested commercially, so I don’t see where pole and liners will have much of an effect on the population. As for size, that doesn’t seem to make much difference taste wise as long as they are trimmed well. Where as a large channel gets a strong flavor. Contaminets wise the biggest concern with larger cats in the ssippi is mercury more so than pcb. Mercury doesn’t have as great an effect on adults as pcb. Just don’t eat them a couple times a week, and don’t feed them to children very often. Hell, tuna isn’t very good for you either, especially the stuff that taste good like albacore.

Sorry Briank, You Can’t beat deep fried flatheads (well maybe some gills can top them), but a walleye can only come close. Flatheads fry up very firm & delicious. Might have to get a package out of the freezer, now I’m hungry.

Plan D is the plan that will be implimented, so everyone can breath easy about plan B. They say they are still open to suggestions to plan D though.

Meeting went good, A lot of good points were made by locals.
FWS didn’t do a very good job of presenting facts to justify their view. They like to skirt the real issue facing the refuge, silting and commercial shipping trafic. The beach goers, skiers (even jet), fisherman, and hunters are not responsible for the major environmental, and habitat destruction caused by nitrate and soil runoff, or the redirection of natural flow to maintain a shipping channel (good for walleyes though). Anyhow they pointed out that pools 7,8,9 have excellent waterfoul activity and showed a nice bar graph comparing this to other pools (which were of no comparison). This was followed up by study results from England, South Wales, pool 19 to name a few, which show the impact due to boating disturbance. So what, we’re on pool 9 and our numbers are great without changing a thing. Maybe we should completly close our hunting to allow that many more ducks down to Louisiana and places so they make their seasons even longer and increase thir bag limits even higher. Also found out that the no wake zone on pool slough is being implimented due to safety concerns due to high boat speeds hummm, wonder what class of boaters caused that,-thanks- Anyhow go to the meetings, get your public comments submitted and hope for the best.
p.s. they will be adding a public workshop for pool 9, they must have forgot about us at first.

Last year a friend came across 40-50lb flathead @ the surface with a large dead soft shell turtle stuck in its mouth. The fish was very stressed but still alive. They removed the turtle, flushed the fish back and forth a few times, and away it swam.

The reason I brought it up was a couple years ago I canoed it and came across a guy @ the Iverson bridge area in Allamakee County that had caught 58 smallies in two days! I’ve yet to fish that area myself, but last year while canoeing it we caught one of the nicest smallies, it jumped right into the canoe! We CPR’d it, I’ll have to dig up that photo. I think that so much of that river is so remote due to the terrain and private property that it goes un noticed by the average angler.

If you use any walnut, It would have to be kept seperate. Walnut dust & shavings can be harmful bedding for some animals because of the toxic oils in walnut.

Me neither, not sure where it is that you are talking about. MN slough is still tight with ice over a foot thick. Pulled snowmobile trailers with ATV’s carrrying 2000 plus LBS of fish on it last sat. with no problems. I don’t see it opening up quite yet.

Hey ted, I have to agree, people just don’t understand how tasty a properly cared for(iced) and cut freshwater drum is. Maybee they can’t get past the name “sheephead”. It’s just like all the people who think a channel cat must tast better than a “mudcat”.

O.K. 65lb braided it is. What about rod length? Is there an advantage with going to an 8′ over a 7′ or is it mostly just personal preference. Helped the father-in-law commercial fishing this past weekend, so now I better go to Cabela’s That should make my back feel better.

“no good, stinkin’, slimy, rotten toothy critter”

Are you talk’n about the best eat’n fish on the river?
Ya sure they’re a pain in the to clean, but mmmm-good just had some Sunday night. I suppose You kept that greezy channel! They’re only good for chummin’ flatheads (now there is some good eatin’) aren’t they! Just kidding, a little trick to getting that fishy oil out of channels is to soak the fillets in good hot tap water, mesage them a little, and you will see a film of oil on the water when your done. makes a difference. Do this before you freeze them also, the fillets will whiten up a little, but it’s not like there cooked. Filleting the skin off rather than skinning helps also. Things you probably already know, but someone else may not.

Additionally I would assume with no ATV trail system near PDC It will be very difficult to find trail permits. Maybe len @ falling rock bar would know. Maybe the friendly DNR officer that asks you where yours is could point you in the right diirection.

my last post didn’t stick, so I’m trying again. I have found in the past (snowmobiling) unless you were up north it was a pain in the — to find trail passes. not all places that will sell you a fishing license will have the trail stickers. That is mainly why I just register my stuff where i use it most. Iv’e yet to find a place in SE minnesota to buy thier trail stickers, every time I would ask someone no one knew. So last week I just registered them there. Sorry this doesn’t help you guys much though for this weekend.

shore slough was so packed about 3 weeks ago I think people had to share holes just to get everyone on. That was on a Saturday, and they were about 3 days behind the bite there.

As for Iowa residents a trail pass should not be required as you are riding on the federal boundry water? or does the postion of the main channel dictate that you are in wisconsin? By the way if you are not wisconsin resident you CAN register your atv or snowmobile in the state of wisconsin. All they ask you for is the county of use. This is perfectly legal and by the way it only costs $30 for 2 years. I do this to be able to ride Wisconsin trails and when I ride in my home state (Iowa) I have a legally registered atv in a state that does not require a trail pass. Kind of hard to require a trail pass for out of state riders who come to ride our no existant trail system! Wisconsin can have my money.

P.S. I do nearly 100% of my snowmbile riding in SE Minnesota, guess where my sleds are now registered

I’ve got a question. These Guys fishing below the dam through the ice, what do you use? Is it the same as open water late season? Hair jigs, plastics, jig and minnow how about jiggin’ raps? I ask beacause I have a back water hole I would like to try that should be holding sauger and a few eye. Also the way I understand it Iowa regs allow for 3 tip ups and 2 poles @ one time so how would a guy rig tip ups for walleye, jig and minnow?

    thanks in advance.
