Having moved up here from Madison, WI having this forum site and all this extensive information regarding the Mississippi River along the La Crosse area has definitely improved my understanding of fishing this river system I would like to thank the admin’s and also the sponsors for this very impressive site…Mahalo (Thank You=Hawaiian) And I’m in…Kyle
August 2, 2006 at 10:34 pm #466151I just checked the upper pools you asked about unfortunately it doesn’t seem the Minnesota side has as much coverage there is no bathygraphic imagery of those pools I can find I’ll ask the FAQ on the USGS page and see if they can help…

August 2, 2006 at 7:09 pm #466094Shad pods, I’m originally from Hawaii(don’t ask parents new jobs thing) here on P8 La Crosse Swift Creek area the pods are huge I remember from fishing the Pacific you find the bait you find the predators eating them and so far its true I’ve caught everything from jumbo gills, crappies, smallies, lgmouths of all sizes, and some smaller cats but nothing too big, the area I would think would be great for bigger cats, deeper water considering its a slough area the buffet water is 3-5′ but which lays a short distance from 30’+ water with decent flow from two different channels coming through the area, I’ve dumped bullies, gills, cut into areas I see as good cat hab but nothing of interest has happened, water temp has to really be screwing with them. Another thing I’ve castnetted(left over from Hawaii) on the pods of shad they seem to be in the 2-3″ size range. Sure hope this rain stays with us for awhile.
July 13, 2006 at 5:34 am #460250was in Sioux Lookout mid-May no problems into or out of US…though next year you’ll need a Passport to get back into the States from Canada from what I hear…anyone got any different news regarding that?
July 13, 2006 at 5:23 am #460249Just wondering why guys think that Rainy Lake couldn’t produce a fish like that deep water, a lot of islands with back bays, shallow isolated reefs and shoals, I’ve driven over it going to Sioux Lookout I don’t know how many times and I wanted to pull over launch the boat and make some casts…just looks like a big fish possibility all over the place…
July 12, 2006 at 7:01 pm #460075Hey I’m kind of new to the Mississippi too, moved from Madison, to La Crosse, been fishing the Sip for about two months solid now still feel a little lost though I’ve caught everything I’ve gone out for, catfish though I’m feeling it out, found them at L&D7, along Goose Island, and I’m still hunting, though I just got some Army Corp maps going to do some paper hunting…especially with the overhead IR sat map which shows flow and depth ranges pretty cool forgot what the technical term is though bath something…
July 12, 2006 at 6:48 pm #460072having just started catfishing consistently I’ve been using PP #65 and #80, ABoo Garcia 7000C reels with Cat Stix’s though I haven’t really caught anything big the 10lb flathead I caught didn’t like flying through the water that much, both lines have put up with some abuse from several 12lb pike and a 17lb pike deadstick fishing too. PowerPro is my choice. I had some Yo Zuri H.D. Carbon left so I tied a 100# 10′ leader to the PowerPro feels pretty good but I’ll see if I hook a biggie…
July 12, 2006 at 4:33 am #459860well I thought my aquarium of pirranha where vicious I may have to start another aquarium with some bullies in it would be little interesting to watch them gobble up whatever I decided to feed them…K
July 12, 2006 at 3:15 am #459840just got back from a short excursion in the slough areas around Swift Creek, full moon and low levels really making it difficult, had some runs but nothing was hitting hard except for acouple of nice northerns and the skeeters damn forgot the OFF, going to try picking up some bullies, anything special working for them or should I just use the good ol’crawlers…
July 11, 2006 at 10:42 pm #459764obivously new to this forum been doing a lot of reading now I need some info, been using gills(4-6″) and perch about the same size with good success on some ok sized cats but are bullheads a better option or should I just start using bigger gills…I’m in La Crosse(P8) a lot of water to get used too since moving from Madison area…
Thanks, K
