I heard a rumor that there were a few stacked by the dam on the lock side in 20-22 FOW, hitting on hair jigs tipped with minnows. word on the street is that a 16 incher was pulled out in that area………

I really didn’t see it yet, so I’ll say it. Especially this time of year when the river is high and current is flowing, watch out for deadheads. Most of the time, they’re bigger than they seem, and can be very dangerous. When boating at night, don’t boat any faster than you can see.

the buffalo were sent live to New York, the guys said buffalo were worth their weight in gold in the eastern markets. To bad they didn’t take more.

That’s what I was told as well by a netter last spring. THe buffalo are worth more in NYC and the eastern markets alive rather than dead. While I agree that they should keep more of them, is basically boils down to economics. If they took all the buffalo and sheepshead, There wouldn’t be any next year and they would be out of a job. They keep a few in the system as a breeding stock for years to come so they can keep coming back and stay employed. Same theory for fur trappers. Keep a few around for next year. That way there’s something to chase after next year.

The carp, buffalo and such that are netted out of the St. Croix are shipped off the the fish markets in NYC where it’s considered a delicasy by some. That is what I was told by one of the netters last spring.

I agree. The big females should be released as soon as possible!! Bring a camera and take lots of pictured!!! Why put undo stress on a female possibly carrying tens of thousands of eggs?

I was one of the “other guys” in the boat with mnextreme(the other guy pictured). The fish were taking the jigs pretty deep for us. When they hit for us, they hit hard. I’ll be out again on the 28th chasing them again!!!

Right now the channels and flatheads are still in the deeper holes in the river. They are congregated, so once you find them, you’ll have some fun. BUt you’ll have to do some searching first. They will stay in the deeper holes until the water temps start warming up some more.

They really are a great thing to have out on the ice!!! If you were to break through, you could feel comfortable (I know what you’re thinking) that you’ll make it to shore in one piece!! They will go places that would blow your mind!
