will not be too long JAGS before we will be hard water fishing. I hope we will see the crappies grow even more this winter. I expect to see alot more of the 10 to 12 inch next spring/summer. We could be in for a good few yrs of excellent size.

assuming you made it up this post is too late to tell you to wear the hunting garb. crappies have been somewhat active at silver birch and near the pokegama bridge just off the sand bar.

we still have a very active crappie and gill bite going on right now. weekend weather may stall it out but not sure. they are taking small jigs with abandon and many I am seeing are 10 inch and larger.

north end of Prairie is hot right now as is the silver birch area on Chetek. Small jigs and drifting is working for most. blac/yello or green/white feather jigs have been our best colors. tip with waxies or nibbles.

gtr the cribs are there for the protection of the smaller fish, no matter the species. you will find all species young using the cribs. Agree eyes have been slow but yesterday one of my guests was picking up eyes in chetek. one over 20 in. Bass also caught at 5#7oz and released.

gills and crappies still biting in ten mile and outside of silver birch. need 10+ of water just off the bottom. da wife keeps killing them with her green/white feather jigs just off the bottom. As cane suggested, she can out fish 90% of us.

GTR, enjoy your stay up here in the north. finally got down in temps and should be normal for next week. depending on where you are staying I would suggest looking for 10 ft + water and start there for crappies. small jigs tipped with waxie or minnow. drop to the bottom and crank up two turns. drift at all times. you will see lots anchored but little fish are generally found that way. eyes have been tough this yr. there are several guides on the lake. Dan Aikens is one my folks have used for eyes and bass. Good luck

well crappies and gills remain active but a little harder to find the larger one. Our success has been in the silver birch area of chetek in 9-10 ft of water. Means drifting in the middle amongst the numerous tubers and skiers. Should be more quiet today and will post if any major catches occur.

Bass were hitting in the shallows yesterday with some regularity. Several nice bass in the 2-4 lb were caught.

Have notice that the fish were doing best on a falling barometer in the last few weeks. Opposite what I was always led to believe ( steady high ws good fishing). Guess I will have to rethink it all over again.

Cane, mama got her ears straightened out twice last week on the trips to north of burnahm for gills and whatever else. Was up near you also last week but the motor does not run well in those thick weeds in you inlet. We will have to take you for a ride. 4 people 4 mph so I cannot go fast long or gas runs out.

northerns have been slow down at the south end. One couple fished for them all week with no keepers. Did see a 5 lber caught last sat by bass fisherman.

eyes still slow to tight jawed. panfish are doing well especially crappies off the dee water. 17-18ft at the bottom. most of those we picked off were 10-12 inches. they were feeding over the mud flat in chetek north of baptist bay. reports to me this am indicate a slow bite on bass but those picked up were nice size. Also strange that with the winds of the last 2 -3 days, my guests were getting more gills than crappie. Friday thru sunday it was mainly crappie. will se what shows up tonight in the fishhouse. tight lines to all and a keeper to boot.

crappies I found yesterday were suspended in 11 to 18 ft of water. varied from bottom to 13 ft down. small feather jigs tipped with waxies seem to do the trick. drop down to the bottom and up 2 cranks. we found 10 inch crappies that way and larger. fished south side of chetek from baptist bay north. no one else around. we found pods of active fish closer to the south than in the middle. Also found a weed be or what I think is one about 1/3 acroos chetek. will need to mark it with gps and try it another day. loads of fissh burried in it and I would like to see if they are eyes or crappies (could be suckers too). anyway this weekend will be better fishing early in the morning before the heavy traffic comes out. evenings will be busy also so it may limit our open water fishing. tight lines guys and gals.

come on vman, you know fishing by ravenswood will get many of those eyes who take the northern baits, How can one fish northerns when the eyes keep jumping on. Know that trolling the 12 ft depths north of burnahm will get both quite frequently. Northerns down by me have been slow at best. BIG snappers seem to love the large sucker minnows set for northerns lately. 2 in last week over 30lb each. They can really get the northern fisherperson excited till he comes up to the top.

most of the gills we caught north of burnahm were in 10 ft or more. those were big. suspect the larger ones are holding at that level on the chain.

gills north of burnahm island in 12 ft. small leeches at dark last night all were 9 to 10 inches. no eyes though. BUT we almost had a wreck to behold. two deer swimming in Chetek out in 18 ft of water in the dark w/o running lights on them. Was coming across when we saw what appeared as two ducks taking off but turned out to be flopping ears. Just missed hitting them. would be something to explain to the ins man. ” hit two deer with my boat in the lake, am I covered” thank god I saw them in time.

eye were hot last night but unfortunately all were 11 to 13 inches. 7 total in the boat in 1/2 hr with leeches and slip floats down 7 to 9 ft.just before dark. several big gills cpr’d.

watch out cane as the new boat will get to your area quickly if the guide will let me use full power. Have to get there to check out gills. My guests have been doing well on gills with fly rod off my docks and along the ten mile shore.

as vman said the south end of the chain is lighting up. crappies appear to be done spawning and heading to deeper water. gills up next. silver birch area hot yesterday for crappies to 11 inches. most in deeper water right on the bottom.
