The tradition is what keeps us coming back. The deer numbers have been terrible lately, but bonding in camp almost seems more important. I have one life long friend that usually makes it up, but not always. Sometimes I’m solo. I do know the area is pretty notorious for decades long deer camps though.

Tattoos are more of a modern fad. Years ago the only guys with tattoos were military or outlaw bikers. I only have one. Patriotic tattoo I got shortly after 9/11/2001. I’d like to get more, but financially there are many more things higher on the priority list.

I hunt zone 178. Only 25 doe tags this year. So needless to say, I wasn’t drawn.

Basseyes, I also have land in 178. North of Meadowlands. Sure doesn’t make sense to drop the doe tags so much. Looks like another slow hunting season up there again.

I stayed at Obabikon way back in 1998. No complaints, nice resort. Since then it’s been Miles Bay Camp. We always go up in June so I can’t give you much advice about your September trip. But from experience, if you want walleye action fish a bit shallow. Bigger fish tend to be deeper. We’ve always just jigged with minnows. Pike, muskies, and smallmouth are readily available by casting. Both in the weeds and rocks. It’s a beautiful area and the fishing always seems to be good. And trust your electronic mapping when it comes to rock hazards, plenty of those around.

Or… you could just go fishing. Instead of spending 50k on a boat and worrying about ride quality. A red 14ft Lund will catch just as many fish.

Might fish the Mississippi River opening weekend around Elk River here. Heading north the Wednesday after opener. Either Outing MN or Lake Vermillion, haven’t decided yet.

I use a cotton net that my dad bought in the 60s. Doesn’t split the fins, easy to untangle.

Life will go on as usual here in Minnesota. Unless you’re retired and glued to the TV. The Middle East has been a mess for thousands of years.

Ebners in Elk River was a great classic bait shop, unfortunately closed now. Current picks would be In Towne Marina, Delaneys, and Wayside Corner north of Cloquet.

I’d imagine once the resorts open up for vehicle traffic, some reports will show up. But I agree, very quiet on this ML forum
