If the main purpose is to protect the fish (which the no fish zone was made for) then hanging around the line would make sense.

Great point Brian. If the #1 purpose of this zone is truly to protect the fish than the water patrol should not even give people the opportunity to break the law.

I think some sort of compromise needs to be reached with the tribes. I agree with most of what Jon J has to say on this topic as he’s been an eye witness to the netting since it began. I also think there is some merit to the argument that walleye fisherman carry some of the blame for this as well. I know…at least I think most of us here on IDO are very much aware of the benefits of conservation. However, every year when the bite gets “hot” hundreds, if not thousands, of walleye fisherman flock to Mille Lacs because its the only place close to the metro where any guy with a gps can catch fish and fill the freezer. I’d bet poaching is also more of a problem than people realize. But back to Jon’s point, nothing will ever really change as long as the nets are in the lake during the spawn. Red lake was completely destroyed and anglers only have access to about 20% of the lake. Were anglers and water clarity and smallmouth to blame for that too? No, it was the nets, and the same thing is happening to Mille Lacs. I think that the idea of trying to ban the nets completely is a huge waste of time and instead somebody should be working on a compromise. I would think that placing a small harvest number for fisherman for the next few years and only allowing netting in the fall would be a start. That’s just my .02$

another win for a special interest group. that’s what we need, a small percentage of people dictating how the rest of us fish. I guess if I catch my fat 54″er I’ll have to get it mounted in wisconsin

could you be more specific? Are you looking for a project for yourself or are you teaching it to others? Lots of cool things to be made out of metal. Wire rim pots or garbage cans, copper roses, tables, tool boxes etc…

I’m guessing that book you sent a link for has tons of data from the Minnesota dnr and other Minnesota biologists proving that a 55″ limit would help the northern pike numbers. I won’t pay 40 bucks to find out though. Maybe you could cut and paste those pages and post them here for us

So what your saying buzz is that more muskies in a lake would equal less small pike? Where’s that study?

The muskie inc guys do a lot of good work towards stocking fish, but this back handed attempt to put an end to all muskie harvesting is absurd. Why don’t they just push for state wide catch and release?

I have been knocked out of my boat before and tossed into a snag on the MN River (WOW that happened fast LOL) and i have ran a canoe through class 3 rapids in 35 degree water nearly drowning, I’ve canoed amongst ice flow and within yards of downstream covered ice.

Ya know what, i had fun and remember them all.

Some people have a different idea of fun I guess.

Sounded to me like the original poster here was just trying to share an experience and remind everyone that rivers and cold water can produce life threatening situations. I guess I didn’t see the part where he was pushing to make wearing pfd’s a requirement.

Was this law even proposed by a muskie group or is it bass guys sick of catching hammer handle pike?

55″ seems a bit ridiculous to me. If the problem is that some lakes have an overabundance of small pike why not make special regs for those lakes instead of a state wide rule? I fish for muskie often but have never kept one. Having said that if I were ever lucky enough to catch a massive 54″er out of vermillion or mille lacs I think that might look good on the wall. Do vermillion and mille lacs have a small pike problem? Neither of those lakes seem to have a shortage of muskies right now with the current 48″ limit, so whats the reason to change? Also, where is the study showing how many small pike a large muskie eats? Do we know for a fact they eat more pike than panfish and walleye? A 55″ minimum would all but guarantee a guy who fishes metro lakes would never in his life be able to harvest a 50″+ trophy muskie. I think that’s just wrong

I used to enjoy KFC from time to time, but the last time I had it I had to call in sick to work the next day. Never again.

Do you also buy all of your rods, reels, line, lures, bait, and gas (if its also a station) there as well? Don’t want to give those dollars away to other places! (all of those listed will net the shop more money with one purchase than your yearly license will). Pretty hypocritical if you don’t… If that one dollar matters to you, then dozens or hundreds should matter even more.

Living in Minnesota its pretty easy to buy all your rods, reels, lures, bait and gas in state. I know all my fishing money gets spent in state, and I’ve never even considered ordering gas online. Must be an Iowa thing

There is no point at all, but since google lets people do it people just think it’s a cool thing to do.

just seen Jason Mitchell doing this on tv this morning. using plastic worms to help keep the little nippers away. Another thing you can do is pinch off the worm right after the second hook. you might just catch a nice mess of perch to go along with the walleye

My dad got a 43″ 2 years ago trolling with a little salmo hornet. Lots of nice pike out there. I’m sure with the walleye population going down more people will start targeting them

its true that the flx-28 will never be able to be updated. but it will always show the bottom, your jig, and fish. The zoom feature will never go away and it will always help a guy catch just as many fish as the lx-7. Have the updates on the lx-7 really boosted the performance or are they usually just to fix glitches?

I think you should get whatever unit you are most comfortable with. The LX-7 for sure has more bells and whistles but look at threads on every fishing forum, Marcum gets far more complaints about stuff not working than vexilar. I’m personally 0-2 on my Marcum products working correctly out of the box. Having said that, I don’t think either unit is going to help you catch more fish than the other. I’m sure Jason Mitchell ad his vex catch just as many fish as James Holst and his lx-7

Kevin you have the same unit right? My zoom doesn’t seem to work unless I have the setting at the 40′ range. Is that normal?

Ok, I guess I can’t hear it from across the living room but definatly at least a few feet away. I guess it probably doesn’t effect fish too much but it is noisy and I can feel it clicking. Kinda different I guess but it works

The only noise my fl-8 makes is from the flasher spinning around. The transducers on the 2 units are very different. The vexilar transducer is solid like a hockey puck and is completely quiet when running. The Marcum transducer has a soft plastic covering that doesn’t fit real tight and it makes a very loud clicking sound when running. By very loud I mean I can hear it from across my living room

plain hook and a minnow, chubby darter, rapala jigging rap. don’t fool yourself into thinking spoons are always the best option for walleyes.

The lowrance article states that the sonar can’t be heard by humans or fish. Why than when I turn on vx-1 pro can I hear a very audible clicking noise?

I understand where you’re coming from but, respectfully, I have to say this is the worst idea I’ve heard in a while. Imagine how much more pressure that would put on the lakes that were not “walk on only” What lakes are so crowded that you think people shouldn’t be able to drive on them? Making certain lakes available to only able bodied men and throwing kids and elders to the other lakes is just plain selfish and wrong. If you want to fish in solitude Mille Lacs, Red Lake, and several other massive bodies of water are not that far of a drive
