Anybody have plans on buying either a new or used boat this year? If so what brand, style are you looking at?

Let me be the first to say…..I hate winter.

Brian, I’m with you, man. Winter is for Eskimos. I just can’t get excited about ice fishing like I do open water fishing. And it’s been WAY too cold and windy around here to fish the river (at least for this guy!). I’ve been going through tackle and studying fishing maps to get some sort of a fix, but it’s not working very well.

Anyway, I’m not looking for a boat this year but if you’re in the market I will give you my opinion on the new Skeeter WX1900 I got from Dean Marshall at Skeeter Boat Center last year. Now that I’ve had a full season to fish out of it I can honestly say I love this boat. It rides great even in rough water and I really like how much room I have in the cockpit. I fish with two other people in the boat quite a bit, and we usually remove the two back seats and just use the rear jumps seats when traveling on plane. That gives us a ton of room in the cockpit and that comes in really handy, especially when we’re pulling cranks all day. When my wife and kids hop in for some fun on the water we put the two rear pedestal seats back in and then we have seating for 6 very comfortably. I am loving this new Skeeter! If you’re in the market, take a look at one.

Good stuff, Brian. Thanks for bringing this back to the top. Good story about great people. It’s nice to hear some of the positive stories out there…

When I lived in Omaha I used to fish the 156th street bridge area on Wehrspann. It’s easy to access and is one of the best spots on the lake. It used to have great crappie fishing in the spring. Have fun!

Very cool, I drew a paddlefish tag for Gavins point in October, planning to try to come down for a few days midweek when it is less crowded. I make my own scheudle so I think this will be a great option. Im hoping to perhaps get in on some fall walleye action as well, I have to hit you up closer to october. – QB

Your plan is an excellent one.

    Daryl B.

I agree. October can be good both below and above Gavin’s Point Dam. Jigs, plastics, lead core, and three ways are all good options that time of year.

JD, PM me your cell phone and I’ll get you mine. We’ll see if we can connect on Sunday if you get up there.

I noticed both, Wade. Of course, I also noticed you put the boat in on SD side. (Nice boat by the way.)

Thanks, JD. I love it. Dean and Eric at Skeeter Boat Center set this boat up for me. With the kicker, I-pilot, and Trollmaster, this Skeeter is a Walleye troller’s dream. If you ever want to check it out let me know. I may head up there Sunday. If I do, you are welcome to join me. If I recall correctly, you had some interest in Skeeter. Is that right?

Good point, Daryl. Take notice that I did post this report in the Nebraska forums. And I am sporting the BIG RED T-shirt, too!

Hi, am heading back to Lac Seul this summer. Must not be too smart because the last time I was there I got lost on the water. Am looking for an easy-to-use handheld GPS (and map) that shows me basic lake information (where am I on the lake, etc). Thanks,

An easy-to-use option would be the Lowrance Endura Safari. I think you can now download a map of Lac Seul for this GPS from Navionics. If not, you can purchase a Navionics Premium Canada Card which will serve you well for basic location/navigation and definitely keep you from getting lost. Have fun!

Maybe you guys are right about the “runner” style baits with their different action. Was looking for a better option to get my cranks down other than leadcore…There is something about leadcore that just doesn’t appeal to me.

I used to feel that way about leadcore. But I fortunately got to spend some time with some guys who knew how to run leadcore correctly. I was shown the light and now I can’t get away from it. If you like to pull cranks try to connect with someone who is handy with leadcore and see if you can jump in the boat with them for an outing or two. You’ll be glad you did.

    KWP,

Thanks for the heads up on the runners.

If you like trolling deep you should consider getting set up with a couple lead core rigs. Most of the time, you’re going to be better off pulling shad style baits than those runner baits (not always, but much of the time). Keep in mind that those are completely different than the runners and if the eyes are biting on the shad baits they may not give your runners much or a look. Much of that will depend on what the walleye are feeding on and what mood they are in.

    Best of luck!

Looking to upgrade to a new fishing rod for walleye. Any suggestions? Do mainly jig fishing.

You’ve got a lot of good suggestions here. I prefer St. Croix for the sensitivity and especially for their service. I broke one in half two years ago (my fault) and had a replacement at my door within a few days for $30. That was a $350 rod. The boys at St. Croix have my support. I just ordered three more from Dean Marshall at Angler’s Guide. Dean has some god tips on rod selection at this link.

I have my Lowrance HDS unit connected to the glassed in transducer on the new Skeeter and it has no trouble getting a good return and it has maintained depth reading at high speeds with zero problems so far.

Ben Garver at Jolly Ann Marine (site sponsor) has a special on a Humminbird that gets it down around $600 after discounts and rebates.

He has other options too. Good luck!

Thanks, Rich. Ben and I missed a lot of the old gang. We were probably a week or two early this year. Hope to catch you next time, buddy.

Thanks everyone! Feels good to be in the Skeeter club!

Looks good Wade. If you’re up on L&C Lake or near Sportmans sometime, I sure would like to take a look at it if possible. I keep thinking I’d like to move into a Skeeter, but would like to see how one handles, etc.

Any time, JD. I get up that way a lot. My dad’s cabin is only a couple of miles from Sportsman’s. Let’s get you in the Skeeter and make you a believer!

Has anyone been to the tackle shop in s sioux city?

Not for several years, but they used to have a good selection. I had them make custom walleye spinners for me and they did good work at a reasonable price. I’m not sure if the same owner is still there though.

Is this the place in riverside?

It is in Riverside. It’s pretty small but they keep a decent stock for a small local joint. I’ve stopped to get live bait there before, on the way up to Yankton.

Didn’t see the rant. I always make a point to turn the channel at the end. Linders should either do a fishing show or a preaching show. The two don’t mix well together.

I have 4 out of 6 Depthmaster IIs that are still going strong after beeing reeled in thousands of times. There are better reels out there and I own some, but these reels are not junk. Some of the top walleye pros use these reels when they have thousand on the line, so they can’t be that bad.

The walleye pros get to replace the junk reel with a new one every time the counter stops working or a gear snaps.

There’s a reason these reels are $35. They are a throw-away product. The fact that a small percentage of them hold up doesn’t make it a good product.

If you want to run the risk of having to replace it every year or two, get the Cabela’s reel.

    You know….
I don’t live anywhere near Mpls. But when I read these types of postings, I wish I did. Trip swaps, open seats, catching a ride. All through the. IDO brotherhood. Very impressive. That kinda thing doesn’t happen every day.

    Thanks IDO!

As mentioned, drop a post in the trip swap and maybe kick in a little gas money and I’m sure someone will come through.

Dog – Of all the forums I frequent, I don’t think there is a better accumulation of good hearted sportsmen as there is here on IDO. I’m a firm believer in giving back to the sports that have given me so much. Same is true for many more on here.

Next to giving a free trip out for a vet and teaching my daughters, my most rewarding outings have been spur of the moment offerings to a parent/child at a camp ground. We always camp at lakes where I fish. I can’t tell you how many times I have gotten up at 5, went to the launch by myself, and there is a mother or father with their child fishing from the dock. A quick conversation and invite to have them out with me for a couple hours of “fun fishing” has lead to some very fond moments. My absolute favorite was a girl I had out in Door County fishing spring smallies. She was about 9 years old and I had her sight fishing bass in about 6 fow. In 2 hours she had easily a dozen nice fish with two over 5. For a girl that never stepped into a boat before, she had her best fishing experience ever. Didn’t cost me a thing and I got to see a smile that looked like it stretched from Washington island to Green Bay.
I know I’m not the only one around here that finds a high level of satisfaction in seeing kids succeed!

    Great story Randy!

Cabelas has line counter reels on sale for $35. Does anyone use these and are they OK or would you have been better off spending a little more?

I’ve had four. They are junk. Get the Sealine and you’ll never have to replace it.
