Just wanted to say thank you to all that replied to this thread many months ago. We have a lot of work left, but Gunner has been getting plenty of miles on this fall chasing the local pheasant population around the county. This was his first solo flush and retrieve. Perfect flush, perfect retrieve to my feet. I don’t know if there is anything more enjoyable than watching your dog do what he loves. Thank you again to all!

Wow. Thank you to all that have shared your experiences and knowledge of new puppies. This is an incredible amount of helpful information that will help my wife and I in our new adventure. We are meeting with the breeder Tuesday to potentially pick out our new family member! I can’t thank you all enough!!

Tntaxidermy.comX2 on Tyler with Top Notch. There’s a reason he’s won best in the world for his fish.
July 10, 2017 at 5:16 pm #1703431One of the most underrated smallie fisheries around. I fish Whitlocks quite regularly from shore, and during the summer months the 3-4 pound bronzebacks are quite plentiful with some 5s mixed in. Can’t wait for this event as I’ve never seen how the elite series is run. Hope the anglers like wind!
January 27, 2017 at 5:48 am #1669052Sorry guys but it’s not exactly a secret anymore considering he would have gotten the exact same info from local bait shops. There are literally hundreds of sloughs that hold fish in the range I gave, and if you know anything about slough hopping, you know most of them either hold a large population of small fish, or with deteriorating water quality, not a large population of fish period(talking perch.) Usually following the stocking reports will give you a chance to catch a few fish, but those real gems can be found by just drilling a ton of holes on anything that touches the right of way and systematically eliminating those unproductive bodies of water. It can be a grind, but it can be worth it too.
January 26, 2017 at 7:25 pm #1668991Go north of 212 and start punching holes on bodies of water that touch the road right of way or have state or federal land adjacent to it. Most of them have perch, and some even have walleyes or crappies. Best bet is to look at the stocking reports and call the local GFP on the locations of those bodies of water.
January 26, 2017 at 9:35 am #1668832Anybody been to Indian springs or Dry #2 lately? Just kind of wondering what last weekend did to the ice.
December 14, 2016 at 6:35 am #1657024Opitz, cattail/kettle and Lynn lakes are a few that come to mind with a lot of submerged timber. There are also a lot of small sloughs up in that area that would fit what you’re looking for.
November 11, 2016 at 9:43 am #1650026If you’re specifically targeting bass, Mina would be my first choice. Lots of places to shore fish and the largemouth are still up shallow as of this past weekend. Richmond would be best if you just want to catch fish in general. Tons of small walleyes and white bass. There is also a chance for very nice gills and some nice crappies. Beware of using live bait though, the bullhead population is huge and usually find live bait before the game fish.
November 6, 2016 at 4:01 pm #1649043Fished Mina Saturday and caught some nice largemouth. Richmond lake also has a good number of white bass. Amsden has a decent population of smallmouth as well.
September 22, 2016 at 12:02 pm #1641068Water levels have continued to drop. It has definitely been a sunrise/sunset bite. Some fish can be caught up in the weeds during the day or along the algae lines. Pulling or casting flicker shads has been the best method for me this summer, but jigs along the weeds or rocky points in the clear water have produced fish at sunset with the falling water temps.
May 5, 2016 at 10:10 pm #1617645As of yesterday in NESD, the water temps were mid 50s and I’m sure rising today. Walleyes started spawning almost two weeks ago on smaller bodies. The post spawn bite has just started to take off hard as we are seeing a lot more females come topside and the pike have really turned on. Seems like south of highway 212 is ahead of the NE a week or two from reports I’ve heard.
April 25, 2016 at 4:38 pm #1615607#3 silver Mepps, a small black and silver X-Rap or a 3″ chartreuse twister tail. Getting into those 4 pounders during the prespawn bite is one of my favorite times of the open water season!
February 23, 2016 at 2:40 pm #1601819Jeff is right. Accesses are getting soft with a lot of runoff on the shorelines. If the shorelines hold up this weekend, next weekend looks much better for access with lows in the teens next week. But we all know how quickly that can change…
February 19, 2016 at 9:36 pm #1601110Just got back from bitter. Shorelines seem to be holding up well as of now. Went on at Bitter Lake Lodge and foubd a foot of water on the ice right at the access and goes for about 200 yards or so with a lot of gravel on the ice. 1-3″ of standing water on top of the ice everywhere else. Heavily used accesses will get dicey soon I’m thinking. Lots of guys pulling permies out yet though. Ice was still hard and found 22-28″
February 19, 2016 at 9:41 am #1601002A buddy on Poinsett has been sending me pics of 2-3″ of water and slush on top of the ice this morning. A lake around Aberdeen lost 4″ of snow on top of the ice from Tuesday to Thursday night and starting to get really slushy in spots. Going to check out the Webster, Roslyn area today. Will report back with more info later tonight.
February 14, 2016 at 7:27 pm #1599869Ive got the new gas lines last year from SM and have not yet put them on mine. I used small zip ties on the ends and have not had an issue since then. That should get you by tally get the new lines just fine.
I thought about that as well. Where does a guy find zip ties small enough? I’ve searched a few stores and haven’t found anything small enough.
January 21, 2016 at 10:44 pm #1594515Was on bitter last Friday and found 16-19″. Trucks and permys all over. Best bite I’ve found was 13-17′ for eyes. A lot of fish in the 13-17″ range with a lot of aggressive, schooling fish up shallower than the cities out there have been fishing.
January 19, 2016 at 2:45 pm #1593861After trying on the Blue Ice Armor, cabelas blue guidewear, and striker hardwater bibs(all you same size) it seemed like the striker bibs were a bit looser in the chest than the other two. Also more range in the crotch area when kneeling and moving around, but not baggy and loose. I also wear 2X and the Hardwater bibs were by far the best fitting.
April 22, 2014 at 11:21 pm #1405627Thanks for the reply Qunitin. Talking to some locals, it sounds like the crappies and white bass took the brunt of the hit on Blue Dog. The dead eyes could maybe be from people high grading or terrible catch and release practices? North Rush looked pretty bad as I went there again with some buddies and snagged quite a few dead walleyes of all sizes. Like you said, hopefully its just a partial freeze out.
April 19, 2014 at 8:27 am #1405071Correct. Sorry, I thought I posted in the South Dakota fishing section. New to the forums so probably a rookie mistake!
