#10 “Zebra” gill pill. My biggest gill of the 2011 ice season, so far. I’m hoping this is the year I find a 10 incher.

I just wanted to share my positive experience with the Rochester Gander Mountain, since most of what I read on IDO is negative. I usually shop around for the best deal when purchasing a larger/higher priced item. Listed are a few of the “deals” I have got in the last year from Gander Mountain.

Last week I purchased a tent. I found the tent cheaper at a online competitor and they price matched the competitor.

I purchased a lazer mag solo auger late last winter. I shopped around for the best deal and found a 10 inch model at a big box store competitor. I wanted the 8 inch model. So I called Gander Mountain in Rochester and asked them what they had. They had one 8 inch left and they offered it to me at a discount price and held it for me until I could get there a couple hours later.

Last fall I purchased a gun after shopping around. Price was 15% cheaper than all the other places I looked.

Check to make sure there is not fuel or another obstruction in the breather tube. A quick fix on the ice is to crack open the gas cap to let in air and then close it. When you get home you can clean out the breather tube.

I fished a couple of spots on lower pool 4 yesterday. Found 5+ inches of good clear ice in most spots. Some areas had slush, other areas the slush was frozen.

I have the full size Peet dryer and the portable size. I take the portable with me all the time. Both have been excellent units. I don’t have the glove attatchment for the larger unit, but it still works great for drying gloves.

I made a similar recipie last week, it was awesome. I topped mine with hot and spicy zingers pickle chips. I think next time I might add some choppped bacon.

Maiden rock area was good for sauger and drum earlier in the week. Not non-stop action, but we were able to pick up a few trolling and live bait rigging.

Half Moon is the original ramp that has been there as long as I can remember. Half Moon was closed recently due to high water, but it may be open now. I have not been down that way yet this spring so I can’t give you an update. I usually drive to the WI side and launch in Alma during the early spring.

If you make it down that way give us an update.

Not that I know of. I have always referred to it as the West Newton landing. I thought it was supposed to be temporary during the draw down, but it has been around for a few years now.

Checked a local pond west of Rochester today, 3 inches of clear ice. I only walked out about 20 feet. Hope the snow doesn’t ruin the good ice we have.

I have been using this breakdown shotgun case from Plano for a couple of years now. Only drawback is I can only fit 4 rod/reel combos in it.

When I am on fishing/hunting trips I like to precook meals at home and vacuum seal them. All you have to do on your trip is warm the meal by boiling the vacuum sealed bag in water. Makes for easy clean-up and allows more time for fishing. Soups, stews, and casseroles work great for doing this.

Another vote for the Danner Pronghorn. I have a set of 400 gram and 1000. If you want to use them in the summer I would look at getting the 200 or uninsulated. I checked out the Cabelas bargain cave deal on the 200 gram, that’s a great price.
