My daughter got hit by an uninsured a$$ last year. We had to pay the deductible and the insurance company went after the party. We still have not received a dime. Police issued a ticket, I have no idea if she paid or not. $4000 damage, $500 deductible. I think I can write off $500 on taxes as the only benefit, but I’m not even sure of that.

Assume you are referring to Casualty Loss? That’s not going to change your tax liability at all. Casualty losses have a $100 and 10% of AGI threshold. If your income is over $5,000, the deductible casualty for this incident will be $0.

I had a maroon boron rod from mid 80’s. Loved that rod. Had it stolen from my vehicle right outside my apartment summer of 97. I had gone fishing that day and was going to get up early to go again on Sunday. Somebody broke into my car and took the rod and a couple cassette tapes. Left my tacklebox (thankfully) alone.

Yeah, would have trimmed motor up, but the guy running the rental space wanted to use up as little space as possible. Motor all the way down saved 12 inches or so.

Is a repaired skeg going to match the the rest of the motor as far as paint, or is that not an issue?

Any idea of cost to repair?

What length leader do most use when pulling a crank behind bouncers?

If you are in the 8th Circuit, (only available in the 8th circuit as the IRS has acquiesced for taxpayers in the 8th Circuit) you may qualify to report the CRP payments on Form 4835 rather than Schedule F. The difference is the net income on the 4835 is not subject to self-employment tax.

To qualify to report these payments on 4835, you would need to be able to justify that you are not a farmer, the payments are not in lieu of farm income, your are retired from farming, or something similar. The facts and circumstances would need to be looked at to make a determination.

Take the young man to Lac Seul.

Although not out of the question for down the road, probably a little further north than I’d prefer to go this year.

The other suggestions though are exactly what I’m looking for. Places to go, who to use for a guide (who to stay away from).

Basically, I am hoping to keep him interested in fishing for his lifetime. My older 2 boys will fish, but it isn’t something that they want to do, whereas, my youngest does.

FYI, northern MN is not out of the question at all. In fact, that is where I figured the suggestions from here would be. If too far to drive, it is possible I could fly.

It’s too bad so many have forgotten the atrocious act done that day.

Thank you to all who serve as police, firefighters, and other rescue workers.

One last update. I just received my “official” certificate in the mail from the FAA just the other day. Continuing to go up when I can and weather permitting. Have taken a few passengers up when the conditions were near perfect for their first plane rides.

Had the opportunity to really save some time 2 weeks ago. Had a 2 hour seminar for work that I needed to attend. Problem was the seminar was a 3 hour drive each way. Weather was perfect that day. 1 hour there, 2 hour seminar, back to the office in another hour.

Recently got checked out in a Cessna 172, so I’ve got another option available to me. Need to get current on my night takeoffs and landings. Going to continue to learn and begin training for IFR.

Thanks for all the comments everyone.

Did you try reformatting card to make sure it is FAT. As mentioned above, FAT2 and NTFS will not work.

Reformat, put the update on the newly formatted card, and then try to update.

    Update on the topic.

My CFI and I were apparently on different pages. When I spoke with the CFI originally, the plan was to have 2-3 lessons per week so I could build on what I had learned and make some progress. In reality, from June 13 to October 16, I had 7 lessons total (7.1 hours logged.) 32+ lessons cancelled by the CFI. Some were weather related, but many were cancelled for everything under the sun. Not to mention the times the CFI didn’t get back to me when he was going to “check his schedule.”

My frustration began to build and I spoke with the CFI multiple times to see if there was different times of the day, different days of the week, anything that we could try to allow for more than 1-2 lessons per month. It seemed that I spent more than half of each lesson relearning what I had done the prior lesson due to the time lapse. Progress was minimal.

October 16 I was at the airport speaking with the airport manager/rental plane owner who had set me up with the CFI. I mentioned that I was probably going to hang it up for the year as I was going to start getting extremely busy with work in November and then mid-January to mid-April would be unavailable to fly at all. Figured it was best to start fresh in April. Expressed my frustrations with all the cancellations, of which they were unaware.

By the end of the day, they called me to let me know they had another CFI that wanted to meet with me if I was interested. I met with the new CFI the following day and he agreed to take me on as a student. I had 4 flight lessons the following week and the only reason it wasn’t 5 is because a downpouring thunderstorm moved in just before the scheduled lesson. Still had some ground school training that day. By the end of that first week, I had solo’d.

We continued with lessons through October and when it would work with my schedule in November. December I hit it pretty hard. Got the night flying in, instrument flying, and covered all training requirements. I was set to complete my first dual cross-country at the end of December. Between the holiday turmoil and some less than ideal weather, it took until the middle of January to get that cross country in.

Had a couple more lessons in January, but knew it was going to have to come to a halt for my busy season (tax accountant). End of April I got back into the cockpit and did my second dual cross country. Did my solo cross country work in May. Took my written test beginning of June and prepared for my checkride hoping to be finished by the end of June.

Had to reschedule 5 times due to non-VFR weather. However, yesterday I was able to complete my checkride. I officially have my Private Pilot Certificate at 41.7 hours. It’s been a journey. Now to continue to improve and then make a decision on whether to get an instrument rating or not.

Bad outcome…but I was taught not to go on to someone’s property without permission. Sounds like the guy knew he shouldn’t have been on the property. If he’d been going there for years, maybe permission should have been obtained years ago.

The auto stow and deploy is the reason I still have my Minnkota Genesis. I didn’t like having to maneuver in the front of the boat in windy conditions. I’ve often wondered why the newer models didn’t incorporate this function.

Kind of late to the conversation, but…

Growing up, we always had Christmas Goose.

    My wife had ham.

Several years ago, I started smoking a brisket and twice baked potatoes for Christmas Eve supper. I put the brisket on the smoker at midnight the night before, babysit it til about 2, get up 2-3 times through the night. Usually finished between 2 and 4:30 pm. Wrap in foil, then towels, then into cooler until we get back from mass. Unwrap, slice and serve. I cube up the point and throw back on the smoker for burnt ends.

I have the Tatou 4S on my 700 Grizzly. Haven’t had enough snow to put them on the past 2 years though. If I recall, I think the overall width was 53″. Never put it in the back of the pickup, but was thinking I would need to build a “platform” to have it above the wheel wells as I didn’t want to damage the treads.

Your ATV could get hit with a meteor too.

What is the recommended prevention technique for that?

Just an FYI, although the time spent at each home is probably the most influential factor, some other things that could help in establishing their tax home are things like: where are vehicles licenses, where are they registered to vote, do they have mail and telephone service at the other home, etc, etc.

My youngest son wants to go squirrel hunting. Problem is, I’ve never prepared them. Anybody have a sure-fire recipe for tree rats?

Well, it took a while coordinating schedules, weather, etc, but had discovery flight last week and first full lesson yesterday. 2 more scheduled for next week.

Really enjoyable. Hope to get through the lesssons by mid to end of July so I can solo. Then won’t have as many conflicts with scheduling and can get hours and practice in.

Here’s my mix for 5 lbs of meat. I’ve been messing with ingredient quantities each batch.

    2 Cup Kikkoman Soy
1-2 small can of pineapple juice
    2T onion powder
    2T garlic powder
    2 T brown sugar
    5 shakes tobacco (optional)
    ¾ T red pepper
    Dash of pizza peppers (optional)
Dash of salt (I use canning)

    Tobasco I assume?

I had planned to get the instrument rating also. Not that I really want to fly in less than ideal conditions, but under IFR, I would think that would allow for work travel more often, not to mention, being rated for instruments would, in theory, provide an extra skill for a more well-rounded pilot.

If the funds are put back into a Qualified Retirement Plan (Traditional IRA) as either a Direct Transfer or Qualified Rollover, you will not incur tax nor penalty.

A Direct Transfer (Trustee to Trustee) is where the funds from the 401k are transferred directly to the IRA. You don’t receive a check. This method can be desirable as you shouldn’t have to worry about documenting that the funds were placed back into a Qualified Retirement Plan. The 1099-R you receive (if any) would indicate the transaction is not taxable/subject to penalty. Less scrutiny by IRS.

A Qualified Rollover has time constraints as far as redepositing the funds into a Qualified Retirement Plan. Two items to take into consideration with this method, make sure you have documentation that the Rollover was completed within the 60 days (60 days is 60 days, not 61) and understand that you may only do 1 Qualified Rollover in a 12 month period. I’ve had many clients over the years not understand that provision and get hit with tax/penalty. Under this scenario, you will receive a 1099-R and have to show the transaction was not taxable/subject to penalty.

If the funds are placed into a Roth IRA rather than a Traditional IRA, as someone previously mentioned, you will have a taxable event. It wouldn’t be subject to penalty, but could certainly generate a substantial tax liability. I normally don’t recommend a Roth Conversion unless there is a good reason for it. I would need more information regarding your situation to make any sort of recommendation.

No flying clubs around here. The airport is just minutes away. (Rural area) I plan to rent while keeping my eyes open for good solid aircraft at a price that I can’t refuse. If it never comes, it never comes.

This won’t just be for joyriding necessarily. Yes, I think it will be enjoyable, but I have CPE hours that I have to get every year, am on the Board of Directors for the state, my oldest son will be leaving for college next year, and we like to get to a couple football games each year. All of these items are 3-6 hour road trips (1 way). It gets old having to spend that much time on the road.

I’ll see where this takes me, but as mentioned above, I don’t want to look back later in life and say “I should have.”
