I had that problem with my 1995 50 hp Merc. It was the low oil alarm for the oil injection. I had my mechanic disconnect it, as it would beep when I was trolling at very low speed. It was not an issue for me, as I am anal enough that I ALWAYS check my injector oil levels before the boat leaves my garage. Good luck with everything.

There is a public boat ramp within a 3 wood south of Wheeler’s Point resort. That is less than a mile from the 4 mile bay outlet.
In the past I’ve heard all you need is a jig and minnow in the bay.
good luck,
Jack
Thanks Jack. I appreciate the advice. It’s good to get advice from one of the guys who know what they’re talking about. My 3 wood is not what it used to be, but we’ll find our way. Thanks again….

If it was me, I would eat the deposit and head out to Chamberlain, SD. I had reservations up at Rainy the next two weeks. I’m not confident it will open up in time for the last weekend of the season. Back up plans.
Reality bites pretty hard sometimes!! Who would have thought we would get snookered two years in a row? Open water is still light years from Birchdale, & of course double that to Vidas. We have officially scrapped our prespawn plans in favor of the first week of the Minnesota regular season. We will be on the river then. By then, we will be in post-spawn, but we should find some decent weather & some fish. Oh well,,, maybe next year.

Mods can move this if they want. I just wanted to get as many opinions as possible.
Our group has a trip planned for the 26th-30th. The resort we are staying at has told us to bring our ice gear as the river won’t be open when we first get there, but they are thinking towards the end of our time it will be. Right now we are debating on eating the deposit and pushing the trip back a bit. No offense to the ice anglers, but I don’t care how good the ice fishing is, I am not driving 8 hours and spending over $200/night to ice fish.
What are your guys’ thoughts? We need some honest input. I take what the resort says with a grain of salt as they want our money. I am thinking we should push the trip back and hope the river opens up more.
Open water is still 20 miles east of Birchdale, which makes it 35 miles east of Vidas yet. With below zero temps forecasted for the next 4 nights & daytime highs hovering in the 30’s & low 40’s, it’s unrealistic to think we will have open water for the prespawn season. I too, had trips planned for the prespawn, one starting on the 30th of March & one on the 7th of April. Two years in a row?? How bad is that? I feel as crappy as the rest of you guys, but reality is reality! You know the old saying, “Wish in one hand, and…..” I’m just sayin’!!!

Yup…my rainey river trip I had planned for march 31 thru April 4 isn’t gonna happen. Looking at the extended forecast..yea I know thats a long way out but my instincts say drop back to plan “B”…which is lake of the woods via Ballards resort with a much bigger group of guys a week after opener……. really was excited about the prespawn bite….but the way mother nature is behaving this year..those pigs might still be in the river then..
Anybody else getting cold feet..or is it just me
My first trip is planned for March 30 to April 2. I’m going to hang in till the bitter end. How can Mother Nature throw us curve balls two years in a row?? It’s been a hell of a winter…..

Packers would of signed him but they were not willing to give him the big $$$$ that HE thought he was worth. He opted for more money and being the star receiver.
Leading up to free agency, word on the street was that Packers wide receiver Greg Jennings was looking for $12 million per year. Four days into the signing-period whirlwind, Jennings, who will turn 30 in September, agreed to terms with the Vikings on a five-year, $47.5 million deal that included a $10 million signing bonus and $18 million guaranteed.
An average salary $9 million is nice, but it ain’t $12 million. But, at the top of this game in 2012, Jennings passed up a chance to earn $11 million a year on a multi-year extension offered up by the Packers, a source told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Bob McGinn.Jennings then suffered a concussion in training camp, and a subsequent abdominal injury sidetracked the 2012 season and deflated his value. But the Packers still wanted to keep him, just not at his suggested retail price. Instead, they reportedly had an offer on the table that would pay Jennings roughly $8 million a season.
Of course you are right about the $8 million a year. You know he is kicking his [censored] for being stupid. Screw him, his dumbass mouth lost him a hell of a lot of respect! Actually he doesn’t have to kick his own [censored], the Packers are doing a good job of that for him!!!

In the spring we have had good luck using plastics. Is anyone having luck using plastics in the fall? It also seems like everyone is fishing the deep holes in the fall. Is there any shallow shoreline bite like we have seen in the spring? Thanks for your feedback. (quote)
You can pick up a fish her and there in the evenings when they start to slide a little shallower, but over all, the Fall bite is more of a deeper water bite. I hit a couple of upper end keepers on plastics & 1/8 oz. blades in orange and black in 15′ or less, but most of our fish came in 22′ to 24′ on meat. I guess you just have to adapt. I’m already looking forward to the spring run when I just pitch exclusively blades and plastics. Moxies and Pulse-R’s with H2O precision jigs. I prefer the gold flake jigs and white or chartreuse/ orange core plastics. It’s my experience that plastics take bigger fish overall. Don’t like messing with meat in the spring anyway!! Good luck all…

I have a 597ci HD and I love it. I’m sure a 700 or 900 series would be that much better, but this is what I could afford, and I am thrilled to have it in my boat. I found it on line for $440.00 + that Humminbird $50.00 rebate deal.I had an older 560 in my boat, so I just plugged the new one in and I was good to go,,, no rewiring or anything like that. I was watching weather up there, it sure didn’t look good.
I am hoping to head up tomorrow mid day and fish Wed & Thur.
Hoping to not have to fish river as I never have, but if you could give any suggestions regarding river that would be great… just in case.
Basically how far up river did you have to go and what depths.
Thanks in advance
We were up on the river from Monday through Thurs. last week, and with the exception of Tues., we had great weather. See my post, Rainy River Fall Trip. We put in at Vidas & fished up & down from there, concentrating on the deepest holes during the day. We caught fish on a variety of presentations, but found that a simple 18″ snell in front of a 1/2 oz. egg sinker worked the best. We tied two circle hooks on almost like a night crawler harnesss & tipped them with emerald shiners, dead or alive, it didn’t make any difference. We just dead sticked them, and had great success. As the evening came on, we would move a little shallower & jig blades or 3/8 oz H2O jigs with minnows. Good luck, and take some time to learn the river, it’s a hell of a fishery!!!

we normally find about 18′ ft of water and just jig. this will be our first year using a map (navionics) however, last year we finally figured out that if you found the deepest water on the river, you found the walleyes. our last 3 days there was a catch fest staying in 24-25′ of water. if we drifted off into 23-22 the bite died. just get into the holes anchor up and jig em up.
Thanks much for the info. Always appreciated. We put in at Vidas and fish up and down from there. We’ll find fish. Looks like the weather will cooperate this year. A little warmer surface temps than we want, but I think we’ll do OK. Good luck to everyone!!

up there 4th-9th as well. gail said they are running good and a 2nd wave has come through. water temps still a little warm compared to last year but somewhat normalish.
last year, it took us about 4 days to figure out the bite real good. once we did though, we smacked the crap out of them.
Looks like with the increased flow, the shiners are starting to show up. We came up later last year and got snowed on too. We will be up on Monday through Fri. this week. Hopefully we’ll find some fish. Any tips you would be willing to share? I have the chip in my Humminbird, just a little point in the right direction would help. Thanks a bunch!!

It is unbeliveable to me that this kind of thing could happen in Minnesota. Two active-duty soliders run down like dogs in a crosswalk. In Roseville. In broad daylight.
One solider became trapped under the vehicle and was dragged almost a mile. The perp then stopped and kicked him to get him loose, then got back in the vehicle and fled, leaving the injured solider laying in the road.
http://www.twincities.com/crime/ci_24117621/roseville-army-recruiter-dragged-nearly-mile-by-hit
This leaves me with two questions:
1. Should public flogging be brought back as part of the punshment for crimes like this?
2. Certainly, the perp should be charged with attempted murder and NOT the much lesser charges mentioned in the report? A perp hits someone with a car, drags them a mile, and then knowingly leaves the injured person laying in the road. If that is not attempted murder, what is?
Needless to say, it will soon emerge that the perp had a long criminal record of vehicle offenses.

The soldier in question is my step son and I have known him since he was 13 months old. Back then, I called him my little Manswa. Travis was a veteran of Iraq & Afganistan and is a Seargeant First Class in the U.S. Army. Your thoughts and prayers are very much appreciated. Yes, there are some really bad people running around out there, and this guy should be taken to task with the maximum! I agree that he should be charged with attempted homicide, nothing less. Travis suffered a badly broken leg in the incident, and God knows what other injuries. He is in satisfactory condition at this time. That’s basically all I know at this time. Again, thanks guys for your concern…..

My motor was sounding a 3 beep alarm today while on the water. I bought it used so I don’t have a manual, and can’t find anything online, to figure out what this alarm is for. Despite the alarm, motor ran great as usual. Any one with a similar model know what this alarm is for? Better yet, any gear heads want to help me resolve this solution? I’m on a tight budget and would like to avoid paying a mechanic for labor if at all possible. Thanks.
You didn’t mention if the motor was in trolling speed or throttled up. I have a 1995 50 hp ELPTO that alarms when I have it throttled down. It is the oil injection sensor, and I just disconnected it. I check my oil before the boat ever gets out of the garage, so I am OK with that. There was a design flaw with some of those engines, so that might be your problem.

check your ground.. are you grounding threw the ball of the truck or is there a ground wire wired to the trailor?
check fuses..
First, check the fuses. I just ran through this whole scenario. 9 times out of 10 it’s the ground. You should not have to rely on the ball hitch for a ground. We had to take the adapter that your round 4 way plug goes into, apart. First, you need to twist it off from under the rear bumper, then take it apart. I’ll bet the ground in there is green & corroded. But do make sure you don’t have any blown fuses. Hope this helps……….
June 14, 2013 at 9:35 pm #1177937I have a frabill 9512 conservation series net with a flat floor. The hoop size is something like 26X23, it has the extendable handle` to 72″, and the netting is absolutely hook proof! It will handle everything you will catch with ease, and the stress on the fish is almost nil. I think you can find them for around $75.00 Great net!!!

Based on what I saw this weekend in the Park Rapids area for the governors opener, many walleyes in the spawn pattern and not very active. Majority of the walleyes that were caught were caught in shallow water less than 10 feet and were near current-creeks for the most part. I found creeks full of walleyes in 1 foot of water and also took video of walleyes spawning in mid day high sun 1 foot clear water. So, I would say shallow and fish current, I am supposed to go up also this Friday to Ear Falls but that is farther north, but we are not sure we are going now… It is a odd year for ice out conditions and if MN is like this now, I am just not sure what that far north will bring. It will either be feast or famine… but I hope I am wrong!
Good luck,
These trips are always fun anyway!
Jake
We are supposed to be heading up to Perrault Lake to Rainbow Point Resort on Friday, but at last report, Perrault Lake is still ice covered. The ice is getting pretty rotten, but it will be touch & go for the opener. Ear Falls is only about 20 miles North of Perrault Lake. If the ice is gone, we will have some lights out fishing. Jigs & plastics, blades, and even bottom bouncers or 3 ways. This is the closest we’ve ever cut it, one year the ice was out for 5 days and the fishing was fabulous!! We’ll keep our fingers crossed. Good luck, guys!!

Slow down folks! Maybe the main reason this declaration has taken place is to bring to attention the mining bill that was passed without any input or ramifications to environment. Since the tribes are directly affected by the proposed mines and the lack of input and say in this matter, maybe this is how to get some voice with others that are brought into the fray. Look at the Governor and Gogebec Mining.
Easy to be a sympathizer when you are on the outside looking in. Their protests against the mining bill & their blowing smoke is just that. This is 2013 and you know as well as I do that you just can’t go dig a hole in the ground & destroy the environment. I was born & raised up there, & when I graduated from Mellen in 1965, our class was 35 kids. Mellen High School graduated 16 kids last year. That country is dying, and this proposed mine will save countless futures and breathe new life into Northern Wisconsin. This one fish limit is just another one of their ploys. They got their federal money, this is not about “mother earth”!! It’s time to change the game. We’ve been held hostage long enough!!

At this time, there is really nothing that is open!!! Lakes that should open early will be the flowages, and it will be tough to get on them… The Eagle River chain will have some open water in the thoroughfares. I am hearing that some of the water to the west of Highway 13 very well could be open… Personally I am going to fish either Lake Superior or Mohawkskin, though I have been looking at the Phillips flowages.
I am guessing that it will be the week after Mother’s Day before all of our water is open and could be later for our biggest lakes!!!
Mark
Phillips weighing in here. Of course we still have some goofy ice fishermen out there yet, but it looks like the Phillips Chain could be out by Saturday. It’s moving around a lot and we have today, with temps in the 70’s & some rain, so that will help. Een if the ice isn’t all gone, we should have plenty of fishable water. You can thank your red brothers for our 1 walleye limit on most of our lakes. THAT is going to put a dent in our tourism, sad to say! I’ll be the Tracker with the net out!!! LMAO….. Tight lines……………

I think the river would still be full of walleyes, but the water temp would determine pre or post spawn fish. No doubt you will have the only open water in northern Minnesota to fish so it might be worth it…..IF the forks don’t let loose and dirty up the river.
I don’t think it will be a typical rainy river spring bite like in years past. I think that is happening now.
I would like to get back up for the week after opening weekend, there should still be fish to be had. Your thoughts on pulling 3-ways with chubs. Hopefully the lines at the boat landings would be shorter.

Cal, did you hit the river last week & how did you guys do? I pitched blades, pitched plastics, vertical jigged blades, vertical jigged meat, with scant success. We were on fish, but it was a really light bite. Sometimes you would just feel a weight & set the hook. I never had one fish really slam it. Oh well, there’s always next year….

I personally watched 3 boats get hit by Canandian Fish and Wildlife last weekend. They were working it hard last weekend. I heard 2nd hand $450 for the boat for fishing without Canadian liscense and said they could have charged them the $1000/person for illegal border crossing but let them go. Small red Lund. They cruised on US side them vered hard into Canadian waters to make the bust each time.
Yes on the red Lund, we saw them working the river. They were also in a plain, silver Alumarine, totally plainclothes. They would be on the Canadian side pretending to be catching fish. When they attracted a boat or two that ventured too far across the river, they would drop the hammer on the unsuspecting guys. I suppose those guys should have known better, but that is pretty slippery of the Canadians to pull that. Anything for a pinch, that is really underhanded. The fish had lockjaw pretty much all over the river. It surely was a departure from the knockout fishing last spring. Well, maybe May will be better….

Both Vidas AND Frontier have huge holes at the end of their ramps? Or just Frontier? Thanks. Heading up there on Thursday.
Vidas has a BIG hole, so be extra careful!! Make sure you have a good spotter & take it SLOW!! The ramp is very steep, but remember to go slow.
April 14, 2013 at 4:59 am #1162377Quote:
Three days of fishing up there 1st part of this week and we never waited more than 5 to 10 minutes to put in. Loading up was much the same. The only slow ramp was Frontier loading up one evening. 15 boats or more waiting out front to load. We just drove the truck and boat up to Birchdale. Got there and the ramp was empty.
For you guys using Frontier there is a huge hole at the end of the ramp. Get your trailer tires in that sucker and you may be leaving the axle in there. You need to jacknife the trailer towards the down river side of the ramp and back out on the gravel. Make sure and have a spotter there for you or at least get out to look at that hole.
Vidas ramp has claimed more than a couple axles already this spring, and the rock pile downstrean from Clementson has claimed about 6 or 7 lower units already. The river is still low from last fall, so caution is the byeword!! The fishing was really poor, and in three days, we didn’t see many nice fish come over the gunwales. The wait to launch at Vidas was well over an hour. Yes, the shore is still lined with a thick ice sheet covered with snow, and it is dangerous. I stood on that sheet of ice for the last three days holding the boat for an hour while my buddy walked almost out to Hiway 11 to get the truck. Not fun when the fish have lockjaw!! A few limits of eaters, but the piggies were scarce!! The Big Fork & the Little Fork are still solid ice with no color showing yet at all. Geez,,, we might go back up to the river for the opener in May. I’ll bet there will still be fish in the river. The water temps have hardly budged yet. It’s going to be a really late, late spring.
