Daylight with both bears again, also enjoying the icing
Height reference from checking today
I feel your frustrations Randy! Simply put I am currently at an average of 1-34 sits (if you even call it any sort of an average) have made 68 total and called in two,(and of course no shot opportunities) have barely made the same set twice, have made multiple all night excursions and nothing. The number of tracks/howl responses have been dismal. Been calling in the west central part of the state and east side of mn. (no license needed for yotes in mn. considered an unprotected specie)
Heading west first week of february myself, I’m sure it’s the little things that are beginning to slowly make a difference in my sets but it’s tough to keep your head in the game with over 40 hours of calling.
Planning on doing the same in 14′. I have hunted ND early the past couple years and went to nebraska for rifle for first time this year. I hunted just public land in both states, and lets just say i would love to spend less time hunting WI and MN public land. Except the EHD and the 10′-11′ winters reeeeally hurt the whitetails the further west you go, but the muley thing kinda got me going in nebraska
So if i have any “destinations” in mind for myself, it would be to pass on ND and head to Montana for early season (pretty sure their bow season was early also) and add in Colorado for muleys, will be going back to Nebraska without a doubt!
Always something NEW! Have browsed a couple times to look at new stuff but heres what kinda popped to me:
– Easton Bowfire Arrows, first I have seen of these arrows, (welcome to watching netflix). If they have some weight to them and good straightness, might be interesting, all white is easier to see than camo.
– Helio fletching for lighted knocks could be pretty darn cool, just curious how the 6 vanes fly and what exactly happens when you would pass through?
– THE TOM BOMB it looks crazy scary! if i draw a turkey tag you can bet the first couple days that will be on the end of the ol’ FMJ! Again, would be interesting to see something with such an aggressive blade idea actually flies straight enough to take a tom in the head. But it kinda tripped my ticker when i first seen it, and with the name TOM BOMB how could you go wrong?
– NXT Generation Revolving bow, now why couldn’t they have come up with that like 15 years ago! I could have broken more things inside the house!
Thats about what caught my eye, will be paying attention to the Helios performance when they begin to get in the hands of more and more people, can’t ever get enough of seeing that beam zip through the sky, and something that throws a brighter bolt?!? I’m all in….
That deer is a STUD! Great read and even better shooting! The clip may be short but always fun to add another element to things, now you have something more for memory rather than still shots……. ok, the mount in the house might be a touch better than a picture….. Congrats!
Have the same routine as most, shower, sprays, wipe downs and constant under layer washing. I found myself grinning a couple times especially with fowler’s regime. I do basically the same when it comes to washing clothes, clean out the dryer vents and wash a load of my “layer” clothes first. then wipe out inside of dryer with scent killer wipes because it smells like fresh mountain blue mist from the girlfriends previous loads. I shake my head at myself like jeez, do you really think it matters that much?!? i dunno i just do it i guess, made sense when i first thought of it….
From there its directly into a scentlok bag to only get opened just before going to stand and back in immediately when out of stand. spray down with scent killer before going in, along with just getting settled into stands. Even in hotter temps i try to layer up as best as possible before sweating which if its over 80 it simply never works, with the thought process of my smell has to make it through more layers to get into the air. NEVER wear my boots outside of the woods, once im out they go into the back of the truck in the tote, if i pay attention to anything it is my boots, this is what is always in constant contact with the ground or foliage, which is where a deers head is always at. I can’t count how many deer (typically that one big doe with a fawn, or a little buck) hit my tracks of where i walked in and follow it directly to my tree. Darn near the best scent drag possible! only if it worked on the right deer.
When it comes to sprays I wish they would sell scent killer spray in 5 gallon pails, I would be the guy that would buy it, im usually walking in, in wet clothes just from spraying down.
I guess tough to explain everything that goes into a consistent routine of scent prevent nothing is 100%. I hunt all public land and a 30 minute walk is simply an average walk to get to areas where I concentrate my hunting. 9 out of 10 times that includes a stand on my back, along with a backpack full of camera gear, the stuff adds up! Going in with the assumption that the wind will be in my favor is darn near like me going in saying yep gunna smoke a tank tonight, just doesn’t happen, so i would say i “attempt” to do the very best i can to hunt with favorable winds but it is jnot always realistic. Just eliminate what odors i can and just go hunt.
Can’t honestly say i have ever figured out any kind of scent elimination brand of spray/wash that has worked better than another, if i ever get winded or get a deer that knows something is up downwind of me, always seems to be something i feel like i did wrong, or forgot to do, not necessarily any products wrongdoing. I would like to get myself into trying out the nose jammer products, sure seems like i hear an aweful lot of good experiences with them, but i just cant get myself over the thought of concealing my own scent and then spraying down with something that smells like a flower garden. Kinda goes against everything i try and NOT do, but hey i can’t argue if it works it works!
Might all be crazy, which sometimes even to me i shake my head with what i wipe or spray down but it comes down to one thing and thats CONFIDENCE, biggest factor in hunting in any matter i guess.
Another thumbs up on the trailcampro.com. lots of info! As most i have ran through the array of buying the cheap cameras in that $60-$100 range because hey if i buy two thats better than having only one out right? well, not when they work until it gets cold or die after one season and 10 sets of batteries… Had what seemed to be a good year last year with the truth cam 46 ultras and the blackout, good battery life and good sensors. blackout seemed to always have trouble figuring out if it wanted to take a IR photo or color at that “twilite” hour, and once batteries started to wear down the movement pictures began to get blurry. Then this summer rolls around and out of three cameras my hunting partner and myself have of the primos brand all three had some form of a malfunction, both ultra cams would not stay on or wouldn’t read the card and the blackout’s battery life went downhill?!? couldn’t keep batteries in it for over a week or so, and customer service was NOT very helpful, had an ultra 46 that was 2 weeks over warranty and got no help. (not that i am fully expecting help but felt maybe some leniency could be given due to the unworkable camera issues…..is what it is) but have two moultrie 880’s from last year that are still working great, along with 5 of the 990i’s from this year that are so far flawless! great sensors, i don’t think any blurry shots, have had all cams out since week after july 4th just changed batteries two weeks ago, all set on high mp and 3 pics a minute. the 990’s have a video mode that is pretty darn cool over this years first scrapes with sound that is about what you would expect from a trail cam mic. but no choppy video in daylight or dark, and no noise whatsoever when turning in video mode, which in some other models when changing to video mode it gives off a good click or tick sound. I believe they are still in that $160-$170 range, especially if you find a sale… would like to say thats my .02 cents but i think i typed enough for .10 cents…. good luck in your search!
