Hope that the 10 day forecast stays partially true and hopefully you can find a few without setting up 100% and then go from there. We will be pulling a couple wheeled houses out a week after you. Our plan is to check out the bite on here, then DR’s in Kelliher, then Rogers when we pick up the shack. See if those three sources have anything in common to start with then move 1/4 mile every 20 minutes until we find the crappies and set up shop for a few days. Good luck.
Not a problem C & R. I was just going to use it to pick on you in the future about someone having to clean your fish for you anyways.
Hey Chris, Shoot me a PM. I’ll clean them for ya. I’ll trade you for a hot bite tip some day. Or a lead on some Morels. I’ll be around tomorrow and could have you eating Crappies for the Superbowl It’ll give me some practice for the trip to Red.
Bummer. I know that feeling. I could feel it myself when I was reading your post. Sounds like your going to need someone to eat those fish for you. You know, bad memories and all. I don’t want you to be traumatized. At least you didn’t cut yourself before fishing. Heal up and get back out there.
Either Red or Red, or maybe Red.I feel like I’m home when I pull on to the lake. Backwaters next. World class fisheries either way and I always appreciate living where I do.
By the way, that’s a nice bluegill. And I really wish I could have seen one of those crappies today. Still better than being at home doing the stuff I was supposed to be doing today.
I drilled a bunch of holes out there today myself. Started out at the dam in 34′ of water and worked my way back, ending up with a couple holes in 12′. I caught quite a few bass and two gills with nothing of much size except for one of the bass. Tried a lot of depths, lures and minnows and spikes. You could definitely tell what kind of fish you were going to have on before you caught it. The two gills were creepers and you had to have the feel. The bass were smashing it and really hammered it if you could catch up with the suspended ones coming through. I had one small bass come up twelve feet to meet the diamond jig coming down. It looked like an air bubble coming up on the Marcum. My first day going from a Vex to a Marcum also. Probably not the best place for a first try. In fishing the trees, the deeper water and wider cone angle made for a lot of clutter.Probably a better place for the lx-5 and its smaller transducer angle.Seemed like I had to use way more gain than the Vex. I’ll give it a try down in the backwaters next weekend and hopefully it will work out better. And maybe this time I’ll be on the right end of the weather. It was cold and WINDY out there today. One of the only times I’ve used the shack supports in fishing SE MN.
Just noticed no HOF sticker in that window. I’ll have to stop out and get one. I have one on the other window that I credit with our good luck up there. Maybe it was the bait that we hauled across the state?

Also, by saying that enforcement out there is not a priority they mean just that. There are plenty of things that are more important in the community/county than policing a reservoir all of the time. They do monitor the area but they are more concerned with other issues.
Happy Birthday Chris! Hope you got out fishing today. I got my Marcum today so I feel like it’s my birthday. I also believe that there are way more important issues than this for law enforcement. But this digs at the true nature of the whole problem out there. If the city is being truthful than there is some very minor parking issues going on way out on a county road(assuming that everyone uses there heads and gets off the road). If the township is being truthful, then you are looking at straight-forward trespassing. Not only trespassing ,but city-sponsored trespassing. MY feelings here are that the city has a responsibility to get to the heart of this issue(ie. produce all documents that have to do with the original easement changes). Until this can be done, they need to protect the rights of the people who gave up there land in order to prevent catastrophic flooding for the people and buisnesses of Rochester( 1978,5 dead and 58.8 million in damage ring a bell?). If done right there would be very little policing to be done. An official announcement in the paper and a change in signage at the reservoir. Let people know in no uncertain terms that they are not allowed out there until this issue is officially cleared up. A few major tickets would get around fast.If it takes five years, so be it, too bad. No one is disputing that these people can be dropped off at the creek and walk or canoe in.There are way too many great places to fish around the Rochester area for anyone to be fishing out there. By the time I get to 11, I can already feel the backwaters calling me for some world-class fishing. It would just be nice to have someone step-forward here and be truthful and that would take someone from the opposing sides to cross the line and say” Heres the deal” Anywho, I don’t and won’t fish out there, and it may be wrong, but I am enjoying the debating. It is nice to be able to have an intelligent forum with people that are able to present their views without being a meathead (Archie Bunker- circa 1970’s).Remember, the opinions stated here are that of a stubborn Irishman. Heres to good fishing and be safe.
I was under the understanding that someone had something in writing. After doing a little more research today it seems like it was only a verbal agreement. Is that right? I deal with permits and easements every day and nothing gets done without plans in triplicate(literally) and lawyers or government officials signatures.I am having an ever harder time believing that a plan like this went through verbally, especially considering all the legal entities involved:City,County,Township,Advisory Boards. There was federal money involved in this too.It is too bad for the landowners if this really was the case.As farmboy stated, they don’t have a (legal)leg to stand on. whether the agreement was made or not.It would be disappointing to think that out of all the officials on the opposite side of the fence from the township and landowners, not one person has the kahunas and honesty to step forward and say this agreement was made.
I’m 100% with CT on this. There is altogether too much he said, she said, going on here. I am firm believer in Karma and this one has bad vibes written all over it. What happens when the shoe is on the other foot and the city creeps up on my property and start’s deciding which laws they want the police to enforce in the park across the street from me? I have seen no definitive answer from ANYONE(as in, both sides)on this issue. Shame on the city for playing games, and I would be embarrased to be the township, or landowner, that can’t produce a document that guaranteed your rights. An agreement, like the one they claim exists, would be framed above my mantel.
Sincerely,
Mr. Both Sides of the Fence
I’m going to second that best bait.Twice this winter I’ve left bait in my minnow bucket for more than two weeks in the garage. The kind you’re afraid to look in when you realize it’s sitting there. A total of two dead minnows so far! The waxies from two days after Thanksgiving are still kicking also. Always good bait and good tips.

After a PM from Luke, and so everyone knows I thought I better make it clear. I am not eligible for a prize, just trying to lite a fire for the tournament “
Ya did a good job Bret! It’s had me thinking about set-ups for URL. Dreams of dropping a 10″ sucker down the hole and hooking into a monster. Nice Fish.
I’ve had good luck with Berkley Vanish. 2# for down here and new 4# for any trips to URL. About to spool up the 8 year olds new Christmas rod with some 4# right now.
HOF has definitely got the right attitude. As far as ice fishing goes, this rain was the best alternative. A few degrees colder this A.M. and we could all be without power right now or worse yet,a foot of snow on top of some tricky ice. I found 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch of standing water on the ice today(not fishing unfortunately). I wasn’t able to break through the ice with the heavy frost bar at willow creek reservoir. A week ago I could pound through pretty quickly. At least now you can see some of the tricky spots and it will get a chance to refreeze and start making new. Snow on the ice would have made for a dangerous season at this point. I took a couple shots of the ice lakes. We are still going to be fine around here as long as YOU DON’T LEAVE YOUR SPUD AT HOME! This shot is WC reservoir.
Good timing on the arrival of that reel weed camera cord today. We had a good time and I think I may have found an 8-year old protege. She was right down there watching them today. I need to pick up the DVR for the camera to post a few videos. It was nice to meet Brian there and put a face to a name.
I knew I should have checked the site before I went out this morning. It would have been fun to start the perch out. Its good practice for the tournament and hope to be able to post a couple out on the ice this winter that will at least make a run at it. Be careful out there and don’t forget that spud in southern MN. Still good ice in places but plenty of tricky spots.
Looks like we will be missing out on these again tonight unless the clouds roll out.
I banged around on the west side of KR-7, right off the road. It took a little bit of hard chopping with my heavy frost bar to get through. It looked pretty good with some standing water. No water on the ice where I was standing. One guy fishing. Lucky.
I also went out about 100 yards at Willow Creek and was pretty satisfied with the quality of that also. It is a shame to see some of that great glass we had turned white and soft in spots. There are a few leg breakers right off that little sand point to the north of the fishing pier. There are smaller spots on the ice where people checked for ice thickness with spuds and some of the melting water widened them a bit. The amount of geese on the north side could be affecting any ice forming over there for a while. Have the geese always been so thick in there? I’m hoping to get out tomorrow evening for a little fishing and a show (Northern Lights) and take the daughter down to the river for some sunnies on Sat. morning. Good luck if you get out there this weekend and don’t forget the spud and the creepers. Your going to need them.
I don’t know where you start calling it a “bull” gill. I’m considering this to be one either way.He was a fun one to catch and the last one of the day.
You can see the line here where I switched to minnow heads. Starts right at the perch. My family was happy to see me and I’ve heard no complaints about having fish twice this week.
I was consistently catching fish this past weekend on waxies and red spikes(loaded up at HOF on the way out)without much size.I switched to minnows and the big boys showed up on the camera without many takers. Solution? Minnow heads. They were all over it. Unfortunately it was time to go home by then. I tried about 20 different combos until I found the right one. It was hesitation until I hit it and the attitude of the fish made a 100% turn-around. It was pretty amazing to watch on the camera.
