Rule needs to apply statewide. This is needed especially during spawning. Size and number of quality fish will improve.
April 10, 2013 at 12:49 am #1127557The article did not disclose any regulations, only the Corps position that the regulations have been in effect for the past 16 years, without being enforced. Kentucky’s Cumberland River and its tributaries were being discussed for restricted access to water near dams. A January public meeting to discuss this proposal was held in Grand Rivers, attended by concerned fisherman, residents, representitives for the governor, and U.S Senators McConnell, and Paul. No further information was availavle.
April 9, 2013 at 11:13 pm #1160967The April edition of NAFC magazine has a one page article about a proposal by the U.S Army Corps of Engineers to close access to more than 60 locks in waterways across the country. The Corps contends that regulations prohibiting boating below dams and boaters using the locks have been in effect for 16 years. The agency announced in December 2012 its intent to close boaters’ access to the waters for safety reasons.

December 11, 2004 at 3:33 am #3312646-lb line, and a 1/2oz jig head is max that I use when fishing at the top of pool 8, in a strong flow, when needed. However the fast flow is not always the best flow. Watch the boats that a are working the current breaks and you will see that the current will help you find the breaks in the flow of water with a minimum of help from the trolling motor. Let the current move the boat, and make corrections with the trolling motor. Too often early on in fishing the lock and dam area I would use the trolling motor to hold in one spot, that is not the right approach.
December 5, 2004 at 8:25 am #330356Was on the water for 3 hrs. Saturday. 1130 am until 230pm. Started at the dam, vertical stuff, zero. Went to some shoreline structure, 4 feet to 12 feet of water, spent two hrs. working a 4-5 hundred foot section of water, 3, 18 inch walleye, and 1, 22 inch walleye. It was slow, but a nice day to be on the water.
November 25, 2004 at 2:54 am #329002The husky jerks while a great looking lure running in the water did not produce a fish that evening. Each fish came on the k-grub. The anticapation of a smashing strike on the husky jerk did not happen. Opted for an early morning outing Thursday, instead of a night trip Wednesday, will look at several areas that produce fish during the day, and pay more attention to the locations this time, than before, and then give it a go again Thursday and Friday evenings.
October 6, 2004 at 1:58 am #323347Sunny days after 12 noon until about 3 pm is the best time for the next several weeks. The bass are going to be found in low current, smooth, sand, or rock areas adjacent to deeper water this time of year. They enjoy the warmer water in the shallower areas and are usually grouped in schools of 15 + fish. Watch for surface action on the water, or birds circling to give away their location. Crank baits have been taking these fish lately.
July 3, 2004 at 1:39 am #311103Why has your insurance company not been involved from the start? They have many more resources to pursue situations just like this one. An individual by ones self will be eaten up by the politcal barriers you will face. Let the insurance company go to war for you.
October 20, 2003 at 3:12 pm #279097Yesterday was a good day for smallmouth. Fished points and ends of wingdams, like you said, that was the hot spot. Used 5 inch flukes, speckeled, and a plain worm hook, no weight, and short jerks of the rod. Lots of fun, and 20+ smallmouth in a four hour period
July 30, 2003 at 3:06 am #271941This past Sunday 8-10am, and 3-5pm had some of the best top water white bass fishing I have ever had. Used skitter-pops, the silver color and caught and released approx. 100 of the white bass during that time. All top water, during bright sun, in 40-50 ft. of water, 150 to 200 foot off the face of the dam right in the middle of the channel, at La Crosse. Key to all of this was the bright sun, and watching the birds, gulls, and other fish eating birds taking minnows and shad from the surface, while the white bass attacked from below. During cloudy periods left the area and fished nearby wingdams, for whatever could be had. Lazy day of fishing, not much to the method or search technique, but a whole lot of action. The larger fish in the schools seem to take the surface lures readily.
May 5, 2003 at 4:23 pm #265875What happened? Last weekend had marginal success with some crappies, this weekend a few small fish, mixed in with several large fish. Same areas, many different presentations, very few fish. The water temp. was lower than last week, in the high 50’s, that may have put the bite off for a while. Spent Sunday morning early, 530am, fishing for smallmouth, at several wingdams in the area. Used “mad toms”, imitation willowcats, and caught 3 nice smallmouth, 2 over 17 inches. Was done by 9am. Short weekend of fishing.
April 25, 2003 at 2:29 am #265080Spent last week at Port Clinton, Apr.13-18th. First day fished with Jason Glatz to get acquainted with the area. 8 1/2 lbs. walleye was the best of the day with Jason, a very nice fish. The water was stained and the fishing was a bit slow that day. The next two and a half days the water cleared considerably, and a limit of fish could be caught in a matter of 2-3 hours. Limits on walleye are 4 per person this time of year. There was a definate morning bite, 7-10 am, and an everning bite 330 – dusk. In between a lot of trolling could be done. Not being very prolific at trolling lures with planner boards most of our trolling was just putting some miles on reef runners. Our fish all came on jigs, H2O jigs, blue, and blue super-doos. The walleyes were on that blue color for three days. The PWT tournament was in town that week, and the first day weigh in saw some huge fish brought to the scales. 12 1/2 lbs. walleye was the biggest of the first day, with numerous 11 and 10 lbs. fish weighed. Thurs. the wind blew at from 30-40 mph out of the NE., and there were no boats on the big lake. Friday the lake settled down a bit, but was very stained, brown, and the fish wanted green and chartruese doos. It was a little harder to put a limit together that day but it could be done. All the jigging was done on the reefs, in from 16 to 9 foot of water. When the bite was on it was not unusual to see from 50 to 150 boats working a series of reefs. It was a great time and would recommend a trip to Erie, and a guided trip with Jason to anyone. Will be going to Erie in October for another try at the large walleye that group together that month, anyone interested in going with pm for details.
April 21, 2003 at 10:32 pm #264779Please put that list together again, I was at Lake Erie the week of the 13-19th of April. Would like to see some other choices for lodging and other accomodations. I am planning
another trip in October for another try at those large walleyes that frequent the reefs.April 8, 2003 at 10:22 pm #263603Jason called last evening, he is quiding a trip for us Sunday the 13th. He said that the wind had not quit blowing from the north, northeast. Hopefully by this weekend the wind will lay down a bit. We are there for a week, maybe some good weather is ahead. Thanks for the reply.
April 4, 2003 at 1:55 am #263079Seat filled, looking forward to 40 degree temp, hope the wind lays down.
April 3, 2003 at 3:21 am #262902Until the limits of possession, and the size limits of fish kept, are made uncomfortable for the sportsperson to live with, the slaughter of reproductive fish will continue. The information provided on how to, where to, and when to, catch a fish, are too accurate, too precise, and too final. The fishing world is too technical, for the survival of the larger fish. The meat hunters are having a go at it now, because of loose possession, and size limits. Change the laws so that 6, 10 lb. fish, or 25 slab crappies or white bass , or 10 catfish, cannot be harvested.
March 28, 2003 at 10:08 pm #255758Find a sand bar that sticks out of the water and has slope to deeper water. Pitch hair jigs dressed with a minnow to the shallow areas first and then the surrounding deeper water. Look for the current flow and let the water flow help direct you bait in the area. Any area with rocks and or sand right now should hold fish. Got a 10 lb walleye this week doing the above. Contact with the bottom is essential, do not use too heavy a hair jig, 3/8 oz tops, if jig will not touch bottom, move on, current is too swift and fish will not be present.
March 26, 2003 at 9:54 pm #255559Low water conditions are not the best for spawning fish. Great for fishing, but poor for the development of the eggs.
February 10, 2003 at 2:17 pm #251968Same people, minus me, tried the tip-up thing again, Sunday, same time 2 pm, different place, different results. 3 northerns 5-8 lbs., in 2 1/2 hours. Figures, the saying no pain no gain rings clear.
February 5, 2003 at 11:51 pm #251664Sugar Point Resort, Leech lake Mn. Great location, Good facilities, excellent area of the lake for fishing, great view. 1-800-733-3150.
February 5, 2003 at 11:41 pm #251663Log on prairielandeyes.com, good info center with contact names. March and October can be as good as can be anywhere for large sauger. SpringValley Il. is a very good area.
February 2, 2003 at 11:38 pm #251397Log onto prairielandeyes.com lots of info about the area and tournaments, and people to comtact for info. If the river isn’t floodong the month of March can be great.
January 31, 2003 at 4:14 pm #251265You would be better off trying the Spring Valley area for fishing. Good population of sauger, and white bass.
January 31, 2003 at 1:01 am #251228There are places on the Mississippi that catching 25 crappie and or bluegill requires only that you show up and fish. It is a shame to see 10-13 inch crappie disappear into the bottom of a boat 25 at a time, 2 to 4 people in a boat doing the same thing. This also applies to the white bass, The limits on these species, crappie, bluegill, and white bass should be reduced to 15 fish. I have only been in this area for 2 years, best fishing I have ever experienced, and the fishery needs to be protected from overharvest. Just an opinion.
