How did my question on Pool 4 stage prediciton turn into a conservation argument?
All my group cares about is being able to get a boat in to fish and a jerk burger and bloody every day from the Harbor Bar. If anyone can promise me those 3 things I’ll throw back every Pool 4 walleye I catch the rest of my life(we pretty much do anyway).
I’m not sure what they cost but I assure you whatever the cost it’s worth it. I spend many hours a year fishing out of my friends 619 and it saves my back while pitching and jigging. It definetly gets in the way while trolling cranks but can be removed easily.
Of course I was joking about picking them up in Red Wing. However I was not joking about not being able to get minnows. Not only does the closest bait shop not open until 8 a.m. but they were also out of minnows.
Hit pool 14 on Thursday morning with limited success. Caught a nice 19inch eye pitching rocks down from the dam early. The current is still pretty strong in the areas we were familiar with and have had luck in the past.
We caught a few dink saugers by the dam dragging and jigging plastics. We saw others catch a few on minnows but unfortunately if you want to use minnows in Clinton, IA you better not plan on picking them up when you get there. According to the locals the closet place you can get minnows on a Thursday is Red Wing.
We ended the day back down river pitching rocks and landing a 18lb flathead that gave my fishing partner quite a fight.
My buddy and I always stay at the Days Inn next to the prison. If you use the Colville (spelling?) Park ramp you will be from the hotel to the water in under 10 minutes and about equal distance from Pepin and Evert’s. Jay or as we call him “Radar” (he looks like Radar O’Reily from M.A.S.H. if Radar was from India) is the owner and is very accommodating to fishermen with boats. The place hasn’t been updated but its clean and the free breakfast is nice before you hit the water.
I use a St. Croix Legend Tournament Walleye 7ft. Mod Action “Heavy Bouncer” rod. It’s the same rod as the LT Bass “Big Crank” Rod except for the grip. I usually pitch Bomber Model 7A’s and don’t have any trouble winging them out there. St. Croix recommends using heavier cranks with it but I wouldn’t be afraid to go to 1/4 ounce lures with the right reel/line combo. Right now I’m using 20lb. Power Pro with an old Bass Pro Rick Clunn bait caster (small profile) and like the set up.
I have no idea why they would close the ramps. Down here on Pool 16 they never do unless the river is closed to traffic do to EXTREME flooding. Even then if your dumb enough to launch a boat you can.
We would love to put in at Evert’s. How’s the parking situation look this weekend Dean? Anybody checked out the conditions at Bay Point, when will it be usable?
A friend of mine read on another web site that Covil Park is open. Rumor has it that some kids shut the gate for laughs.
