I recently made a batch of “Buckboard” Bacon. Basically, buckboard bacon is anything that is cured and isn’t the pig’s belly. I used a pork shoulder, removed the bone, applied a dry rub of Curly’s Brown Sugar Cure (You can get it here – https://www.curleyssausagekitchen.com/products/brown-sugar-cure?_pos=1&_sid=4a9733d25&_ss=r), let it cure in a large plastic bag in the fridge for ten days, soaked it in water two hours to clean off some of the cure and remove some of the salt. Then smoked it at 200 degrees for about 3 hours. Here is the end result. Curly’s Sausage Kitchen also has an excellent seasoning mix for making Venison Bacon as well.

Thanks,
GlennJune 2, 2017 at 10:58 am #1697254I was looking for the same thing a few years ago and took a chance on a high powered flashlight from amazon. This light works well for me and i use it during duck season as well. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002OOZERY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1

April 5, 2016 at 10:46 am #1611656Rent a car and drive south to the Kenai peninsula. Purchase the 2016 Milepost and the Moon Anchorage, Denali & the Kenai Peninsula guide books. lots of good stuff to read and make plans for beofre you leave. The lower Kenai river for King Salmon and the Upper Kenai has excellent Rainbow Trout fishing. You will most likely need a guide trip for both. The Russian river should have Sockeye (Reds) running that time of year, that’s a DIY fishing excursion and a very good chance at seeing both black and brown bears. Then go to Homer and charter a boat for Halibut fishing. Lots of stuff to see along the way, including bears and moose. I guess you could go the opposite direction north out Anchorage just to sight see and go to Denali, but I was just assume fish and hike and there is plenty of that in the Kenai peninsula. Have fun!

August 20, 2015 at 10:40 am #156050010 years ago when I used to duck hunt Lake Onamia a friend and I would always scout the lake prior to opener. One year we ran into a First Nation American (I don’t like the term “Native American” as there is no such thing since we are all immigrants to this land. First Nation Americans came across from Russia/Asia when the Bearing Sea froze over.) he was just wrapping up his wild rice harvest, he told us that in the 25 plus years he had been harvesting this was the best he had ever seen it. He also added that he did not encounter another tribe member harvesting in all the days he spent on the water. The back of his pick up was full with burlap sacks of wild rice. So my question is how many First Nation Members actually harvest wild rice any more? Or will more of them do it this year just to exercise their treaty rights?

July 23, 2015 at 7:23 am #1555998Definitely an AWESOME report! Nice work boys!
All I want to know is, are these mainland fish or are you near Isle Royal?
I’d like waypoints but if James or someone could tells us if we need a MN or Michigan license that would narrow it down a bit. Like James said “with a Lake that covers over 20 MILLION acres can be very frustrating at times”
July 21, 2015 at 8:14 am #1555647The markings on that last fish in Ben’s pictures are just incredible. Beautiful fish. Did you guys keep any smaller fish to eat?
July 21, 2015 at 8:05 am #1555646I apologize for not getting back to those who have sent me PM’s. I think I’ve caught up with everyone now as I had some issues responding via email and my cr@ppy Comcast.net account. All four reels are still available as I cannot seem to connect / meet with people to get the things delivered. Thanks for your patience.
July 15, 2015 at 9:29 am #1554859Besides waypoint sharing with the Ethernet connections two HDS Gen 2 units with the Ethernet connection can share one mapping chip and both units will display the mapping data, providing you have both units turned on of course. It saves you from buying another chip at $100 or so.

April 13, 2015 at 12:17 pm #1533941Randy you have some valid points as I don’t ever remember a year when so many big fish have been caught and are vulnerable due to the low water conditions. I also wonder if the MN and WI DNR’s have conducted or are working on a more current walleye/sauger study on pool 4.
What if going forward we as responsible fisherman recommend to both the Wisconsin and MN DNR to place a one fish over 20″ size limit in your daily catch from March 10 thru April 15 (approximate dates). This would allow only one fish over 20″ in your bag limit, protect the spawning fish, and ensure that we as fisherman are trying to protect a resource / fishery that we all love and appreciate.

January 28, 2015 at 2:26 pm #1503810Any way you look at this the state is going to want more money from us boat owners to cover educational material, signage, additional weed cops at the access, and hundreds of additional wash down stations and the man power to operate them.
Among other funding, both at the state and federal level, for aquatic invasive species awareness programs all MN licensed boats already have a $5 “Aquatic Invasive Species Surcharge” so why don’t they use that to pay for the educational materials? Oops I forgot as they are already using that money to pay for weed cops.
I personally have no interest in giving the state additional money to cover the costs of education material. If the material is presented on the DNR web site and we are forced to take a knowledge test or merely contest to fact that we, as boat owners, understand and agree to obey the law I don’t see the need for an additional or increased surcharge to support educational materials.
