They just dont survive due to predation, poor nesting, winters, etc.

Wild pheasants by nature have a very short lifespan. You are correct, most roosters hatched in June die by hunting season’s end so that puts their average lifespan between 4-6 months long. But since it only takes 1 rooster to keep the population going, hens are what you need, not roosters.

    Why are these so cheap

Because the battery market has become saturated with suppliers. Go to Amazon and you will literally see hundreds of options available.

My advice is that if you are considering a purchase I would do it sooner rather than later. Tariffs on batteries will increase their cost. Every lithium battery is made in China.

A quiet week is on tap. Only a minimal chance of moisture on wed/thurs. Slightly colder for a few days, followed by a big warm up later this week. Nearing 70 by next weekend.

    Spring! grin

I’d quite surprised that the Capitals are so good this season as a team. They were projected to be a borderline playoff team. The fact that they’re the best team in the eastern conference is remarkable and only adds to the novelty of Ovechkins goal record.

Thought Minnesota had a pretty good period there even though they’re down 1-0.

It looks increasingly likely that the Jets will be the first round opponent now. If the Wild qualify that is.

The question now is being slaughtered by the Jets better than missing the playoffs completely?

Calgary would be a more worthy opponent for Winnipeg IMO

MN also idiotically also screwed state anglers by tying our fishing Opener to Memorial Day Weekend rather than the second Saturday in May. So, there is at least one other scenario where WI opens for fishing two weeks before MN when a late Memorial Day happens.

Ok I see what you’re saying now. You’re right the bass opener in MN used to be Memorial Day weekend. I forgot about that.

Ovi just scored 894… please please dont let the record breaker be an empty netter…

I hope he gets a hat trick at home for the record. Would be a fitting way to do it.

I think Ovechkin scored. He’s 2 away from the record now.

if voting factors in team success in addition to individual success, how can it not be Zeev? He’s outplayed and beaten Ryan Leonard (by a wide margin) every time they’ve played each other…

It’s only based on the regular season. So the fact that Denver just beat BC has nothing to do with it. Or the fact that Denver is in the frozen four and BC is not.

Honestly could be a toss up. I could see Isaac Howard winning it too. They generally like more goals though, that’s why I guessed Ryan Leonard.

WI used to open bass season the first Saturday in May with the rest of the gamefish.

    I know. That’s exactly what I’m saying.

Thumper said they always used to “open way earlier.” A week is not way earlier.

I think they all got the bird flu in my area. Didnt see a single one on my drive last night through an area I should have seen a bunch.

Not saying it’s impossible, but it’s unlikely that every single turkey got bird flu. It usually doesn’t spread like wildfire amongst wild birds because they’re outside and spread out more.

Domesticated poultry indoors…now that’s another story.

Just last week MN detected in dairy cattle here. It’s definitely spreading. Spring is when it usually does the most damage especially if it’s wet and cool. Sunlight and warmth help mitigate it.

Buium is part of the Hobey Hat Trick along with Ryan Leonard and Isaac Howard.

My hunch says Leonard will win it.

They claim 36,000 in attendence / tickets sold. That number has to be grossly padded.

I drove past it when I left work and it was a mass exodus to the bars lol

I think it took me 4 years to get my first turkey. Now I’ve got one each of the past 4 seasons. I didn’t grow up hunting so there was a learning curve.

Neither did I. I started when I was in college.

Ironically, I shot a nice tom the very first morning I ever hunted turkeys and until last year, I hadn’t filled a tag on the first day again.

This is my 19th season. I’ve tagged 10 birds. 7 toms, 3 jakes.

I still say that scouting is the most important factor in my success rate.

Those that scout turkeys alot have you been seeing them consistently?

I look for their roost. Quite often they roost in the same group of trees or single tree nearly every night unless something disrupts that pattern.

Once you locate that, you can set up nearby (not super close where you spook them going in) and adjust accordingly.

Quite often they have a core area and a daily travel pattern. They are very predictable birds once you learn their regular habits. The primary issue I have is getting one close enough. A lot of people who don’t hunt them think that because they see them all over, they are easy to fill a tag with. Totally false. And the success rate shows it, being about 25% with a shotgun and a mere 10% with a bow.

If you are filling a tag every other year, you are way ahead of the curve.

My bass club use to always do a early season Tourney in Wisc. because they always opened way earlier there than here.

No they didn’t. They only removed their closed season and converted it to a C & R season in the last 5 years.

Their season traditionally closed in late February and opened one week before ours for many years.

Turkeys appear susceptible to over harvest (albeit there may be other reasons for population declines in key states).

Many states that once had higher limits, long seasons, and over the counter nonresident tags are now decreasing limits and hunting pressure.

Eliminating time periods and increasing bag limits would result in higher pressure on the bird population and could induce more leasing, etc…

This has happened in Kansas and Nebraska recently. They’ve dropped bag limits, no more harvesting of hens, and limited non resident tags.

Best to keep a thriving population thriving. Over harvest and pressure is real.

I think a big part of it has been severe drought in recent years.

Shesterkin is playing like a sieve tonight. 3 goals on 12 shots?

The most ideal spot is the top wild card berth. That sends them to the Pacific for 2 rounds and avoids the gauntlet of Winnipeg, Dallas, and Colorado.

Is the University of Tennessee a “special interest” group ? asking before I bother posting their findings… because, your scientific study is so much more evident.

You won’t be able to convince him. He’s hell bent on making the wild turkey and their story of conservation success a farse.

Thank you for posting the link above.

Another vote for the Power Loon here, when I’m in the listening zone.

Otherwise I listen to KFAN a lot too. Summer time is fairly boring since there’s really no sports to discuss other than baseball.

There is zero data or studies that indicate turkeys are “nest robbers” of other upland game birds. None. It’s nothing but misinformation being spread without fact.

Unreal that Calgary came back in the 3rd to beat the Avs, playoff lead down to just 6 points with the Flames having 2 games in hand and play the Wild in Calgary as well….

Apparently 2 of the final 3 games are against the Flames and Canucks, both on the road.

Those 2 games may honestly determine who makes or misses the playoffs.
