I refuse to buy $8 beers and hot dogs at venues……so we usually hit a nice restaraunt before a game/event
! then have a few beers afterwards somewhere reasonable. If the prices were reasonable at the venue I would prefer to just eat and drink there.

Can’t beat the Mississippi River for walleye in the spring and fall. Never lake fished (except Great Lakes) but why would I.

Fishing, cleaning & preparing a fish dinner. FISH FRY !

Educational, competitive, hands on & delicious!

Bonus points for homemade tartar sauce.

    I would ace that class!

Well, here it is…..not as I expected but I got my first turtle and butchered it. First time ever for me & it’s in the freezer. Thank goodness for YouTube!! Can’t wait to make some soup!!

I did receive my recreational turtle permit and 3 tags, so I’m legal to use traps, when & if I can get the time and help required to set that all up. I haven’t even got to make a trap yet. Prolly gonna be next year.

Meanwhile, I got this snapping turtle by hand. It measured well over 12″ (required). I let it clean out in a barrel for a few days, before butchering, changing the water twice a day.

The butchering part took a long, long time. Probably an hr & a half. Then all the cleanup.

I used my aluminum fish landing pan to keep everything contained.

I was able to get a lot of meat from the turtle. Cheek meat was attempted but failed. I did get those back straps tho! Managed to save a nice shell for later display too.

I managed to navigate the anatomy alright and do a nice, clean & thorough job. Very happy with how it went. I used cut resistant gloves and took my time.

Only bummer was the orange eggs inside. I would never have kept a female knowingly. I now know the difference. Males are said to have a distinctive concaved plastron & females have a flat plastron.

I’ll keep the meat vacuum sealed in the deep freeze till I’m ready to make the soup.

The pic was after I took his head off and had him upside down, to drain the blood. Just thought it looked funny, like he was talking out of his arse, explaining with his hands…….reminded me of my salesman brother !

I can be fishing in the same boat, using the same bait , with my brother in law……and he will out fish me just about every time. My wife actually does the same thing when I take her fishing. I still think they cheat.

Make some ground blinds from deadfall tree limbs, prior to the season. Have several to rotate thru during the season, morning and evening stand. Don’t be afraid to sit during mid day. I’ve shot plenty of deer at noon. I don’t use scent block. My brother and I have always done well but others in our party of 6 seem to never even see a dear. I wonder if they are looking, sitting still, keeping quiet, etc….never give up. Find a group to hunt with and try a different tactic or two. My brother chain smokes in the woods too and he always gets more than one dear. Antler soup isn’t my thing so I shoot anything from a button buck , doe, etc…. The smaller deer are more suitable for steaks and chops anyways.

    1. Do you find value in being able to fish a variety of water? Yes but I get all the variety I need right out in the Mississippi River.

    2. Would you pay money to fish private ponds that are more convenient and/or offer better fishing than what you currently fish? No. Refuse to pay for access, other than my annual launch sticker at Bass Camp

    3. If so, how much would you be willing to pay per day, week, or season to fish this water? N/A

    4. Would you use this website/app? Why or why not? No….smart phones make people stupid. I dropped my iPhone into the depths of the Mississippi river while fishing last summer, best thing that ever happened.

I had a new well put in when we got the house …..softener was $800 installed (fleck) ….bypassed the kitchen cold water tap and the outside spigots….no need to drink soft water plus the pets, flowers etc benefit from untreated / fresh well water. Luckily it tastes great too…..105′ well. Our old well had high nitrates. I test water myself each year.

I cook every day with my favorite Lodge Cast Iron Pan. The 10″ is my favorite. Perfect omeletes, steaks, over easy eggs, etc….biggest thing I’ve learned is to sear steaks on med-hi, then drop to medium to cook thru to your preference. Everything else, I never use higher than medium heat. I always use a small amount of olive oil. I also have a Lodge Dutch Oven with lid and a Lodge 13″ pan. They are harder to clean and less practical.
