494 launch is open M-F from 7:30am to 4:30pm. Closed on weekends.
January 11, 2004 at 11:40 pm #288194This is what it looked like after the ice breaker made it our to the main channel.
January 11, 2004 at 11:34 pm #288192After an hour and fifteen minutes of ice removal we were able to get the boat into the water at the 494 launch. Fishing was well worth it with all the sauger and eyes we could pull out. Nothing large but consistent. Over the course of the afternoon we caught 70 + fish.
If anyone has Monday off they will be able to use the launch. After that it is going to get awful hard again.
Upon return to the launch we found that another angler took advantage of the now open 494 access.January 11, 2004 at 1:23 am #288133It is rehabilitation/maintenance work being completed by the RWWL. It is a hydraulic jump that provides aeration and spawing habitat in addition to providing a hard base to move heavy equipment across Hay Creek as required to conduct habitat improvements projects and maintain existing water control structures on RWWL property.
January 3, 2004 at 11:27 am #287253Wow Steve!
What a night to remember eh!
I can’t say that we have been able to pull out a pair of tropies like those however I can say that we have been able to pull out more nice walleyes this past two weeks than I can remember for a while. The sauger bite has been ridiculous, it is almost criminal. Looks like today may be the last day out for a while.
I’m sorry we missed our guided trip with you. Hopefully in 2004 we will connect. Congrats on your recent trophy and the best to you in 2004. If your new year is anything like how it started it will be quite memorable.December 31, 2003 at 9:23 pm #287047Hey Big Northern!
I just stopped by the 494 Wakota launch on my way back from New Richmond and it is totally clear on both sides. There is always plenty of good parking down there also. Generally speaking the fishing is good too.
Good Luck and Happy New Year.December 11, 2003 at 2:13 pm #284878Gee Wiz Mike that is one pig of an eye. I see you caught it in pool two. Is that the bottom of your boat in the picture or a fillet table?
December 2, 2003 at 12:29 am #283616I errored in my previous posting. The 55 inch cat was caught on a jig and a ringworm. Channel cats were caught 3 way trolling.
December 1, 2003 at 10:58 pm #283593Once those cats get over 45 inches they weigh in at approximately 1 lb per inch. I got that from my nephew who is a self proclaimed cat fishing fanatic/expert. When I had him at the dam yesterday he caught a huge paddlefish! I asked him about the cat weight to length relationship and the above mentioned is what he told me.
Also as a side bar: My main winter time fishing partner caught a 55 incher on pool two several weeks ago while 3 way trolling with a no. 7 rapala!November 7, 2003 at 10:53 am #281154I change out to Ironsilk high visability 8lb. It sheds water well and is as it says for strength yet smooth like silk. The super lines soak up too much water and freeze every thing for winter fishing.
April 6, 2003 at 10:55 am #263324Hey Jig Head,
Good for you, sounds like you had some fast action on the pool. Either my browser is hosed or your attachment did not come thru. Try it again.
Yesterday afternoon was 3 way trolling with rapalas for me, once I finally got to the boat house with the train derailment. Thinking about giving it a shot this morning.
Best FishesMarch 1, 2003 at 11:45 am #253288Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man how to use the internet and you won’t see him for weeks.
February 9, 2003 at 1:06 pm #251897Wow! What a stitch. That must have been incredible. I have heard of that happening with muskrats in spear house’.
February 5, 2003 at 1:06 pm #251627Thanks for the report Zim, Last year we started fishing up in that area about this time and I have been getting the itch. Would have been up there this past Saturday if we had not been doing some improvements initiatives planning with the RWWL.
As far as the 494 area, it is going to take more than a little turn in the weather to open that up again altough a good week in the 30’s would sure help.February 5, 2003 at 1:16 am #251590I read the article in the paper this morning and my reaction was that I was pleased the lock upgrades appear to be stalled. I believe that we need a strong economy and
the need to move the shear volume of materials that barging accomplishes. However I also believe that this has been at a huge environmental cost, which is why I was also pleased to read that they were recommending 33 million dollars towards environmental improvements for the Upper Mississippi.
This administartion has had a bitch of a time since taking office. One of our spy planes makes an emergency landing in China, 9/11, War in Afganistan, North Korea, Iraq, now the shuttle Columbia all in conjunction with an economy that has been failing since before the election.
Hats off to those that got this ludicrous expenditure with a major undertone of subsidy to corporate giants off the table!February 2, 2003 at 12:11 pm #251356I’m totally out of my element not being on the water these last two weeks, however w/ FTR and you posters I can fish it vicariously thru these posts.
ThanksFebruary 1, 2003 at 11:21 pm #251324Have the Lowrance X15 w/ GPS. It is a woderful navigational tool and I have complete faith in them after running 7 miles in total fog right to the spot within several feet. Would not be without it for unfamilar, night time and fog navigation. A+.
January 24, 2003 at 1:40 am #250972I always enjoyed setting up a bunch of tip ups for Northerns out on Birch or Clear and then getting a rip snorting fire cooking on the shore to roast duck breasts and brats.
When I reflect back on some of those outings they were some of the best times I spent with family and friends. Sometimes we even caught some nice pike.January 22, 2003 at 1:55 am #250803The attached photo was of a 23″ sauger caught up in St Paul a couple weeks ago.
Pretty nice fish too.January 18, 2003 at 10:52 am #250647Here, Here !
I was wondering when you were going to inject.
Thanks.
January 18, 2003 at 3:29 am #250630I purchased the Lakemaster Package last year and found it to be a joke. I ended up sending it back to the company for a full refund. The tech I spoke to regarding the glitches that I had with it informed me that it had “bugs” for some operating systems.
I was thoroughly unimpressed!January 17, 2003 at 4:23 am #250545For me it has to be running a pair of 7′ glass rods with 3 ways & raps on a 6 to 12′ sand flat w/ George Thorogood blasting.
