True dat! Especially the part about sub 40 degree temps and slow fishing. After she drops blow 40 I wouldn’t even bother makeing the trip up, nothing bites.
I’d like to throw some major praise to the guy who caught that musky and sent her back home. The replica will look better than a mount anyway
I’m sure it wasn’t a tough decision anyway. That’s like mounting a carp.
I think you are reading a little too much into it partner! Just polking a little fun at at Musky fishing. I would never send one of those rough fish floating anyway…they taste great, just like bald eagle.
Well… it might be because some of the fellas that normally catch lots of big walleyes didn’t want to talk about it and are still licking there wounds. There are plenty of 18″-24″ fish bitting though and an occasional 26-28. Not much to brag about by Mille Lacs standards. You know it was a tough go when the longest post has a picture of a musky on it. Gotta bop those rough fish on the head and send em floatin when you catch them.
I can probably find you a spot sometime after next weekend if mid week runs work for you. Otherwise I think I have a spot left for Monday 10/09 which will be very prime. You will need to do more than net though as giant walleyes will will likely be harrasing us all night! Of course you would need to enter the eyefishing circle of trust.
Big fish…nope, if you see a big fish in September it is usually missing a top fin and has far too many teeth. Seriously if you see one this time of year you better name it. As for the approach, I prefer tossing top waters over Tulibee hole, but if that doesn’t work for you then a guy could always troll some shad raps on west side weedlines I suppose.
Sorry to hear about the tuff night, but out there taking the brunt of that wind was no place to be. Keep trying different spots cause fish were snapping for us last night.
Scott what was the total angler harvest last year? I had been trying to pay attention but never saw a late year total.
The current size slot and limit is pretty good and I suspect it will not change much. I would like to see the top be pushed to 30″ or really 31″ and make this a real trophy fishery, but I know that idea doesn’t have much support.
This is sorta backwords but I am one of those guys wo keeps those 12″ and 13″ when ever I want a meal. They are perfect size for the pan and best eating! My philosophy is to keep a few little guys since they are very aboundant right now and release the 16″-20″ since they are a year away or already important spawners.
Cal- did you used to be ranger21 or something similer to that????
I think most guys like a suspending bait on the lake, they do work well, but when the fish are snaping they will hit a HJ, tstick, zuri, bomber or Original or anything else that moves just as well. When walleye really decide to feed they are a pretty agressive preditor and will snap at almost anything that moves.
Sorry, Pool 2 please. Any general advise on how far up or down river I should head to find a few wingdams to pitch at would be great too. Steve I would still love to hear about the trip to Colombia last year. One of these years I will make it out there.
can anybody tell me what how I get to the ramp. I will be heading east on 494.
thanks
sorry guys, this site would not take my pics they are too big apparently. Guess you will have to take my word or call a resort for yourself.
I think I have been seeing the same guy a few times out that direction lately. BTW what is all this talk about ice picks? What are you going to do with that? Water temp was 48.5 last night and still pushing 50 main lake. Its still like bath water out there. Talking mid to upper 50’s again next week.
Lip ripper- buddy, I said the bite for the SMALL fish was going to be over by now. Main lake temp the other day were still pushing 51 degrees. The small fish bite has not shut off yet, so for that I am wrong and sorry. I really did not expect main lake temps to be pushing 50’s by November. My mistake.
Wow castaway you look like a big fella! I thought I was looking at Jesse Ventura for a second. Note to self do not razz casaway anymore!
The key is to paddle vigorisouly! Actually right not it doesn’t matter much. It is pretty much drop a line catch a fish.
Gotta agree with the guys here. A hot dog on a hook will work this fall. The bite is just that consistent. No special skill or knowledge required, if you make it out you will catch plenty of fish. I even saw a few ranger guys catching fish so you know the bite had to be good!
Lip-I appreciate your opionion, but yes I actually can and do continue to predict the fishing with very good accuracy. But like anything else it depends on many variables includine where, depth, structure, tactics and many other things. I’m headed fishing, good luck to all.
No sir Steve, would never kid about something as serious as walleye!!! How have you been? Wondering when I would hear from you next. How was the Columbia river, did you make the trip? Haven’t talked to you since I went to Erie. You missed a heck of a good week on Erie this year! Weather and fishing was exceptional. Would love to hear some Columbia reports some time.
sorry to offend Kraig, small fish are not pure hell, just not why I fish this specific body of water this paticular time of year.
as far as getting those 15’s get as you can because the window to catch them trolling after dark is closing very quickly. You might have a week, 2 tops. Then poof that bite will be gone quicker than it arrived.
Yes that is the problem this year. When guys are taking pictures or even talking about 25-27″ fish you know it has been a poor fall for big fish. (Note: I am talking about poor fish not ripping on the fellows above)In past years we refuse to use the camera or net on anything less than 28″ because the rest of the fish are just so common. So far this year the net and camera could have been left home and I have made a lot of trips already. Going to be tough big fish bite this time.
yes sir, but worst for our gang still means a ton of fish. Depends what your after I guess, it will be the best small fish bite in even more years than that but that is not real important to us.
I think 02 was the year with snow which was also on holloween night. Believe me you were not alone on the lake then either although I remember you could not see the lights of shore from 1/2 mile out.
