    No changes.
    Coming soon, possibly.

Mississippi above st croix, is inland Minnesota rules… opens Saturday.

6 eyes, 1 over 20. Possession same as daily.

3.5 miles of river of pool3 are considered inland Minnesota, because it resides within Minnesota border.

Prescott and below are border regs

Hastings is 6 eyes? I always thought it was 4! That’s kinda nice. Any size limits on the pike?

Cool Wild are doing awesome. I’m thankful they are on the radio. While I dislike that they are not on tv (at least yet) at least there is no company that can take credit for their success/broadcast. Anyone know if these games can be streamed through NHL.com or something?

Hmm steve to try pool 3 from shore or not to… I already know beyond a reasonable doubt that the Hastings police love me after one of them called a 14″ walleye a sauger……..

Edit: Background story, the cops rolled up on me as I caught a walleye and told me I could keep it when asking about the murder of a man named Kyle Hammilton.

Hope they caught the mother effer… still don’t feel as safe as I should after being a block away fishing when this incident occurred.

Now my spots out the bag… whatever it’s sucked lately anyway

I was out Monday. It was relatively quiet compared to the last few days. I didn’t do much; three “eater” sized Walleyes. Water temp was 40.8 degrees. But yea, what’s with all the wind? This is getting old.

    SR

I hear ya but at least our trees are hella sturdy and not coming down. Any luck in the shallows close to shore?

Oh, I thought that was the height of your wake

Reminds me of that time I didn’t have my nose four feet out the water whistling

Water temps and seasons change alot of things Evan, even if the flow is similar.

You’re better of reading into seasonal patterns if you haven’t caught fish since July

Nope I have caught fish just not in the numbers or location I prefer.

Evan, one suggestion is to keep a spreadsheet of all your outings. I started doing that a few years ago and it has helped. With the conditions changing all the time I can refer back to similar conditions. I keep flow, level, weather conditions, date, time of day, location, presentations, notes, etc.

Has helped me a ton to try and pattern things.

Yeah I can understand your suggestion here but that is a full time job in itself. My apple photos has done a good job in recent years documenting the memorable ones. Maybe someday when the time is right I’ll learn how to catch em from a boat a little better.

Look for the datem on any gauge that isn’t in “above sea level”.

Once you know the datem, (in sea level) it will make more sense…and more work. 10′ above datem of 655′ would be 665 feet above sea level.

Back when I was trying to compare the tail water of Dam #3 to the Red Wing gauge, I gave up and started to record both in my photos.

Hey BK thanks for your replies. I really appreciate the explanations and experience you’ve shared because it has helped a young man learn.

My brain was trying to comprehend if the water was up to the same height on my favorite rock what else could be different about the area. As far as I can tell season, food in the river available, flow but think the river height if around the same on the rock would indicate that the water levels are consistent. I’m sure theirs lots of other things I could spam about… moon rise etc but as far as I can tell getting too scientific with fishing sometimes over does it.

    Fry’em as you get’em!!

My late grandfather on my dad’s side always had a bag of fish for my family in the freezer whenever we would visit him. I try to uphold this tradition by keeping enough for my immediate family through gifting in our household available for a fish fry. Keyword try..

What they are going to say is that if you have any part of a specific fish, it counts towards your possession limit. Say you have a bag with 8 <em class=”ido-tag-em”>walleye cheeks, you are in possession of 4 walleyes.
    DT

Well I am glad I asked and ate before going over my household limit. Thanks!

Well tech support still an issue on this site. I was just trying to say thanks for the help with this info. I am a little confused now tho as I have always had a favorite rock to measure how high the river is, yet here when the river is about what I knew it to be in July, the gauges are reading significantly different?

If I go through 150 of these in a season you know the walleye fishing is good..

Giving you the benefit of the doubt that you realize all of pool 2 is catch and release only for walleye/sauger and bass. Your statements are confusing but I’ll assume you’re talking pool 3 when you’re taking a limit from shore?

yes sorry if these posts are not in the right forum. All fish I have harvested as far as walleye/sauger go have been from pool 3 in hastings below the dam.

four, with only one over 20″ so I was actually saying three. The spot I fish is very dependent on the river level at least that’s how my summer went. I understand the river changes daily.

I’m confused by your limit statement Evan. Is that 6 fish?

    @evanpeterson12

Edit: reminds me what is the sauger limit there? I’ve caught a few only kept one at 18″ I was told was legal. In my ancient history I remember fishing somewhere without a sauger limit but seeing as they are basically walleyes I hardly believe that to be the case?

Spring Lake has a lot of shallow water. Be very careful if you are boating around outside of the channel marker buoys. I would think that there are much more friendly stretches of river to get your feet wet on (pardon the pun). Lots of folks, myself included, start on the upper end of the pool from Ford Dam down to around the airport. There aren’t wing dams here, and right now there is very little current and not much for navigational hazards. If you don’t have much experience, I’d recommend starting there until you get comfortable with the navigation a bit.

I fished upper pool 2 below the dam to the bridge today with nothing more than a bite after 6 hours pitching plastics, minnows, and crawlers. I was even unable to find any good sunfish willing to bite or crappies.

From shore at night I can limit out on walleyes in half the time most nights.

I’ve always been a river guy this is my first year with a boat.

I decided against going through the lock today.

    Hey all,

I am thinking of taking my boat out on Spring Lake. Any suggestions on what stretch to fish? I see on a map that this a very large body of water. I am a very inexperienced boater so below lock and dam at Hastings is about the extent of my river traveling.

I launched a spring lake last week. There is good fishing at the top and bottom of the lake for all species. Like Cody said you’ll want to take your time and use “explorer mode” while motoring. There are a lot of wood and rock hazards, as well as just a lot of really shallow water.

You can also launch at Nininger’s that is a couple miles south of spring lake and I also heard that the park re-opened bud’s landing but you need a park pass to launch there. I haven’t been to bud’s it might be more of a kayak launch. waytogo

    jp

There is a launch? I am comfortable with taking it slow through the shallows. I thought possibly Rebecca Lake crossed into the upper portion (above the dam) but wasn’t sure.

Happy to be on the water and certainly appreciate the advice.

3rivers- you must be the “big BANG” guy… 😂

Normally I catch a lot of channels on the upper end with artificials but only one so far this year which is crazy to me.

Did however get a couple <strong class=”ido-tag-strong”>walleyes on one trolling run yesterday, which was nice. Crazy how specific it had to be presented, but every time you’d get hit! Had to be downstream 2.5 mph or so, banging shallow rocks.

Yup, been getting into em in the shallows off cranks chasing massive schools of baitfish. 30″+ in walleye had right at the top of the water before spitting…

Not sure what to think about the water, pool 3 has gone down in the last day or so when I was hoping and expecting it going up.

Thanks! Three hours from shore produced a 19 & a 16.5″! Definitely more than a few at this spot but the fish were overgorged!

I don;t think we need to end spending on things but rather create more spending on stocking walleye in every body of water in Minnesota that can handle them. XD

The bigger question I have is how much did this raise the water levels on pool 3 of the mississippi?

I think if I remember correctly they catch em off the bottom below the dam nearest winona using jigs & plastics.

That’s awesome. Boating safety first, I have a very little john boat and with the wind as strong as it has been during the day I am hesitant to bring it out unless the fish are biting.

Any tips on pool 3 fishing? Sunnies and white bass have been picked up with ease lately same with the oh so common sheepshead. Wondering what else there is to fish for in the great Miss!

I was able to understand some of what you have said. I’ve gotten into numbers of Walleye here in higher waters on pool 3 but since it has gone down only stripers. Just starting to fish pool 3 (have made 3 boat trips ever in my lifetime two of which have been onto upper pool 3). Anything else has been flatheads and stripers. Feel free to PM if you wanna talk about where to be finding them right now because I’m stumped. Thank you for sharing.

Had some luck fishing bass, walleye, and pike around 10pm couple nights ago. Gonna try it out tonight, surprised to see a flat caught this late in the yr. Guess I havent been out enough to know. How big was she? Caught on crawlers? or minnows?

    Evan-

I see that you are just a bit down river from me.

What types of areas are you targeting right now? Obviously you are on shore so I’m assuming shallow snags?

I’ve had three strike outs in a row. I fish with a 10′ pole to really pitch it far from shore.. The main channel was producing a lot of fish for about two weeks and now have been skunked! Have you had any luck? Where are they being caught? I’m thinking the muddy water has shutdown the bite?
