I could never cheer for anyone besides the Gophers. If I was at St. Cloud I would cheer for them EXCEPT when they played the Gophers…. only 8 minnesotans on St. Cloud, compared to the Gophers who only have 4 kids not from MN!!! cheer for the real MN team. GO GOPHERS

What exactly makes hook and line the “right” way to fish? In fact fishing is actually netting, at least historically.
It’s not that netting is somehow the “wrong” way to fish, it is HOW they are netting that is wrong. Netting during that time of year is just poor management. I would have no problem with the netting if it was done at a different time of year.
Any harvasting of that number of fish during that time of year whether it was with a hook or a net would be harmful to a fishery.
August 6, 2013 at 10:36 pm #1188058There are alot of people to blame. Resort owners and the community have done a poor job marketing the lakes smallmouth and musky fishing. The DNR’s rules do drive people away because in Minnesota it isn’t about catching trophy smallmouth or about catching trophy walleyes or musky… the majority of Minnesotans want to catch a limit of eater walleyes. Just the way it is. If they can’t catch a limit of eater walleyes they could care less about trophy walleyes.
I have to be honest, I am a bass fisherman and I think the DNR should be managing the lake for trophy smallmouth especially in days like these were the walleyes are hurting. Trophy smallmouth could bring alot of people in if the resort owners got on board and marketed it more and the DNR promoted them more. That isn’t the case though. Instead the DNR lowers the 21″ min to 20″…. I don’t get it. If they really needed a slot they should do a 17″-22″ or 18″-22″…. they should be protecting trophy smallies because that is what bass guys want.
Bass guys will go a long way for trophy fish… walleye guys will go a long ways for eaters and trophy fish are just a bonus for them.
July 30, 2013 at 4:42 am #1186369Deer can be a super tough lake with the clear water. Only fish it at night to give yourself a better chance. Pokegama is better for walleyes and Smallies and it is much more consistent with a bigger average size for both species. I have fished both lakes a good amount.

Good to know about the drivers license.
June 9, 2013 at 11:16 pm #1176671I was pike and bass fishing and had no fish on board and nothing to hide. I was just curious because I had never seen that happen before. After he searched everything and saw everything was good he was very friendly. He didn’t come off friendly at first though when he was opening my compartments. It was also the first time I have ever had an officer ask for my drivers license and compare my signature on my drivers license to the one on my fishing license. I wasn’t even aware that I needed both while fishing.

One key thing about these sweatshirts…..DO NOT DRY THEM IN A DRYER. AIR DRY ONLY..They will shrink, this is by far the warmest sweatshirt that I own, also very comfortable.
How much do they shrink? I want one but can pretty much guarantee that at some point I will accidentally put it through the dryer. So if possible it would be best if I just bought a bigger size and shrunk it as soon as I got it. just need to know what size. Or is shrinking it going to completely ruin it?
February 4, 2013 at 9:51 pm #1138066Lots of companies with punching rods out there. I have an American Rodsmiths and a Powell. Really like the powell rods. Punching rods are generally rated up to around 2 oz weights.
I have revos for reels.
3/4 – 1.5 oz tungsten weights
65 lbs Sunline braidI punch everything from 3″ craws to 12″ worms. Smaller and thinner baits get down through the stuff alot easier, but like all things, it depends on what the fish want.
February 4, 2013 at 9:44 pm #1138062In the Twin Cities or any lake packed with people is one thing… I can understand that. To be on a lake outside of the metro and have almost no one else on the lake and to have that happen is a whole different story.
January 28, 2013 at 6:19 pm #1135576Look into powell rods. They make some great stuff, have lifetime warrenties. I have always been a shimano and American rodsmith rods guy myself but about 2 years ago I started slowlhy replacing my rods with Powells.
If you can find them the American Rodsmith H3 Titanium Denny Brauer series is incredible. They don’t make them anymore but if you can find one grab it. The “perfect flipping stick” is their flipping rod and the “big nasty” is the punching rod

January 11, 2013 at 10:52 pm #1129705I wouldn’t trade my organized sport experience for anything. Can’t tell you how mad I would have been at my parents if they didn’t let me play sports.
I will say that I was smart enough to not play any sports in the summer and since I am not that big on ice fishing it worked out perfect. Sports all winter and fishing all summer.
No kids for me yet. So who knows what they will be into.
October 7, 2012 at 4:35 am #1103436If the DNR truly thinks there are no smallmouth in Leech then they are out of their minds and don’t have have a clue what is going on in the fishery. I have talked to many bass guys who caught at least a random one here or there this year alone and have talked to walleye fishermen throughout the years that occasionally catch them. The 1st one I caught out there was 12 years ago and it was 4.75 lbs so it had to be in there for a while before I caught it.
If they can’t make any water off limits for that person then they can’t make smallmouth off limits either can they? So I still don’t see what they are accomplishing.
Still sounds like a load of hogwash to make smallmouth off limits in the entire main lake!
October 5, 2012 at 11:31 pm #1103295Can someone explain to me what leech being an AIS lake has anything to to with the smallmouth in leech being able to get weighed in? If they were worried about kabekona wouldn’t they just make that off limits instead of making smallmouth off limits in the whole system?
There are plenty of smallmouth already in leech and has been for a long time in low numbers.in recent years the population has only been getting better.
September 20, 2012 at 2:38 pm #1100017I am assuming Chequamegon bay can get rolling and that it won’t take too much wind. So how much wind would you say is too much to fish out there? Is it going to be nasty with a 15 mph wind?
September 18, 2012 at 11:17 pm #1099581Thanks for the help. Been wanting to head over there for a bunch of years now and am really excited to finally be doing it.
June 27, 2012 at 7:24 pm #1079238The smelt population took a HUGE hit last year, with a massive die off. The DNR was looking into this spring and were very worried about it. Most fishermen believed it was because of a rapid rise in water temps but the DNR does not think that is the case since it was lake wide and not basin to basin. There is also historical data that shows smelt to have periodic die offs like that. I don’t know how long it takes for smelt populations to recover and it will be interesting to see how that affects fishing and growth rates.
June 25, 2012 at 5:22 am #1078448Up in my neck of the woods. All that water definitely changed things. Glad to hear you got some good ones.

February 20, 2011 at 5:18 am #939355Awesome fish! One more week of bass fishing then I will be chasing those black and white beauties.
February 20, 2011 at 5:16 am #939354Amazing fishermen and an amazing person. Met him way back when they had the Bassmasters Universities in the Twin Cities. Been my hero since I was 9 years old, and 20 years later he still is.
February 20, 2011 at 5:13 am #939353Not a win for the gophers but a tie tonight. Another win would have been nice but taking 3 of 4 points in the Kohl Center is still a good weekend for the Gophers.
