X2 on the pier 4 for breakfast! pizza isn’t bad at fins and feathers next to the red ram. burgers aren’t too bad at the red ram as well.

while fishing pool 14 over the fourth weekend i saw several large dead pike floating. my water thermometer read 89.6 to 90.0 degrees most of last week. that is darn near bath water.

elk-addict it all depends on where/how deep you’ll be fishing. there is no sink rate difference between the #test lead core lines. if you are going to be fishing in 25-30 FOW pulling the crank at 2-3mph you’ll need a bunch of colors(5-8) if you are going to be trolling in 10-15FOW at 2mph you’ll only need 2-3 colors. and you do not have to have a counter reel-any reel that will hold 4-500 yds of mono is all you’ll need since lead is colored coded all you need to pay attention to is the # of colors let out. hope this helps.

In alma the water clarity was still pretty good. could see the prop spinning in the water if that is any indication.

i would check out the past two weeks posts in this forum on Alma/pool 5 there is a lot of good info for you to go on. in short dragging ringworms right across from the ramp up to the dam and pulling jig/minnow combos up at the dam and drifting down the main channel were putting fish in the boat.

The lake is high and muddy. You can cqtch crappie in the five to eight inch range all day long. Walleye on the other hand have been at best spotty. If you fish hard you might cwtch three or four walleye if u r lucky! I’d stay in clinton and fish the river……;-)

For what it’s worth, I have a Skeet Reese (wright mcgill) s-glass 7′ crankbait rod and an old shimano curado reel spooled with 14lb fluor/ green fireline and it throws anything from flicker shads to heavy bombers. (i believe they also make a 7’10” inch model as well). if that wind is blowing out of the south i’d go with the 7′ spinning rod as suggested in the earlier post. i really like the set-up i have and the rod is guaranteed for life and runs about $80-90.

Ended up catching a few walleyes trolling cranks close to shore near riprap and and inside half of wingdams. Also caught a few shorts casting cranks to wingdams. The fish were not jumping in the boat by any means but that’s fishing. All in all the weather was nice and it was good to be out. Thanks for all the info!

some of you purists out there will probably be horrified by this but i was losing a bunch of crankbaits to the zebra mussels while casting and trolling wingdams down on pool 14. i noticed that most of the “cuts” were on the first 5-6″ of line closest to the lure. so i started using a 9-12″ steel leader with a snap on all my crankbaits. i feel this has saved me about 50% more lures than w/out the leader. also comes in handy when you hook into a snot rocket which is quite often. haven’t really noticed the fish showing any disapproval to the leader and the cranks run fine. i do notice a slight difference in the action of the smaller cranks like flicker shads and #4/#5 shadraps, but when tossing the DT raps and bombers i can’t tell the difference. just my 0.02 cents worth.

that looks more like a remote steering unit for a kicker motor. what i am looking for is something like “power steering” for a 75hp tiller motor. i have seen it advertised for the bigger tiller motors, like the 125hp and 150hp tiller lunds. i want my own hand on the tiller and throttle, just want it easier to turn left and right.

fished a little on friday and saturday from princeton to camanche and the bite was a little off for us as well. we managed to put a couple eaters in the boat and released several shorts and slot fish. caught our eaters on the wingdam tops with cranks. the shorts and slots came from dubuque rigs in front of the tips or right over the tips in the most flow. all but one came on the dropper jig and all the bites were very light and timid, just a tick and then you’d better set the hook. the weather was fantastic! did catch a nice northern in the lower sand pit trolling a crank. just made one pass on the north end, probably weighed 6-7lbs, would make a great fish for a fry if you know how to fillet out that Y-bone.

a student of mine hit pool 14 on monday and did pretty good for a first timer to the pool. he ended up catching about 8 walleyes-2 slots-2 keepers and the rest short. he also caught about 3-4 largemouth and a lot of sheepies. caught all his fish trolling cranks-firetiger on rock. the cold front coming thru this weekend might slow things down, but other than that i have no reason to believe you shouldn’t make the trip. also have heard reports from 13 that they were catching alot of fish last week. there ya go.

you mentioned iowa waters having big fish. i can’t fish pool 14 and NOT catch a 20-26″ nearly every time i fish the pool. with the slot limits imposed a few years back the numbers of large walleyes has gone up 20 fold! last monday my boat caught a 26″, 2 x 22″, 2 x 21″, and a 20″, three 15-20″ fish, and 3 x 14.5″ fish! that is crazy fishing anywhere you go and all those fish were caught in about 4 hours of fishing! i am all for keeping those slots and catch and release regs!

thanks guys! i like the idea of the bunks up front and rollers at the back of the trailer. the brackets that hold the front rollers could easily be converted into bunks with a couple 2×4’s and carpet. i’ll definitely keep the trailer and learn to like it. glad to hear no one is having any leakage or cracking caused by the pressure points from rollers. makes me feel a whole lot better. thanks again!

the bite was still on monday as well. caught several slot fish and several 14.5″ fish as well as some eaters. caught all my fish trolling rock in 10-13 FOW with jointed fire tiger wally divers.

my vote is for the pflueger summit or president. i can cast them a mile, smooth retrieve, very light weight, and they don’t cost the $200 to $500 a shimano does for the same features. i’ve had mine for about 2.5 years and have never had a hick-up. very good, solid, dependable, reels. for bottom bouncing i have two quantum accurists with the flipping switch in right and left hand retrieve. no compalints there either. also have the pflueger spinning reels in the president and supreme and love them. i always like shimano reels but it just seems they have priced themselves out of my pay grade. just my two cents worth.
