    OK!

I’ve change my “Full Name” and saved it. So now I’ll just wait for it to show up as my username.

    Thanks guys!

Now I just have to figure out how to send a PM!

It would seem like a good idea to put restrictions on the types of broadheads used for bows of this draw weight.

Cut on impact styles – fixed blade would certainly help with penetration with the reduced energy vs. expandables.

Good idea, Jon. I hope he lets you know which “scientists” gave him the information. Has anyone else read or heard of these claims? With the opener it’s the perfect time to stir the global warming pot a little more, I suppose.

    Thanks guys,

That’s exactly what I wanted to know. I’m in the market for a motor and I keep seeing what I want in a long shaft.

I’m looking for a motor to use on the back of one of Everts Resorts 15′ rental boats.

If anyone out there has a 7-25 horse short shaft they would like to sell, I’m interested. I’m looking to spend under $500.

    Thanks,
    Scott

    Thanks for the great advice!

The more I look into this, the more I realize how much I don’t know about it. I’m really excited about getting started.

I plan to stop by the footed shaft this weekend to talk with Lamont. Hopefully I can look at some bows and maybe even shoot one.

Is there a “commercial” brand/model of recurve that’s known as a great bow or do I need to go with a custom built bow?

I’ve been looking at some boyers sites: Brackenbury, Fox, Wes Wallace, Trails End, and WOW are they Georgeous : AND EXPENSIVE!

    Thanks again!

    RiverEyes-

Thank you for sharing your talents with us. I can’t tell you how much I enjoy your pictures. It’s not hard for me to imagine actually being there. Looking at them is a great way to decompress.

IDA – is there any way we can put all of RiverEyes posts into a location we can go to?

Really cool stuff. Thanks again for sharing something that’s really priceless.

    Jack, Brent and Shane,

Thanks for the offer to take me out. I just might take you up on it. Yes, it was a heck of a price and it stings a little, but I had to sell it and it wasn’t moving at the previous price,so…..

    Thanks guys,

I may even be persuaded to throw in some trolling gear – rods/counting reels/planer boards.

Let’s make a deal – this is a crisis situation for my family and I am VERY motivated to sell it immediately!

I would love to sell it this weekend, if possible. I can take you out – run it. Try everything. Make me an offer.

    Lenny,

Thanks a ton. I think my day will be spent south of hok-si-la.

My trip is on Saturday the 2nd. If we do any good I’ll post it on here.

Thanks again for your help and thanks for the invite on Sunday. Unfortunately I’ve got a big day Sunday and won’t be getting out.

I fished today for about 4 hours out on the lake. It was blowing big time today. It was my first time out this spring and I found fish much deeper than I expected pulling #5 jointed shads in firetiger and blue/orange.

It seemed like I had to go really slow to get them to bite, so going with the wind wasn’t an option. Tough boat controll day for me. Before 11 a.m. it was a walleye/sauger mix. 5 eyes between 12-15″ with one 18.5 and a few nice sauger for a fish fry. After 11 all I caught was sauger, about 50/50 keepers/shorties.

As I said, It was really rolling out there today. I tried fishing some wind blown rip rap shallow, but had my handed to me by the wind with no fish to show. I couldn’t get bit until I went out deeper.

I’ll try again tomorrow. I think I might head further south.

    Any suggestions?

    fishinfreak,

I hunted with a mathews bow for several years before I sold it. I can not imagine a better bow. I’m sure the Hoyt is probably a beautiful bow as well. Once you get into the top end bows I really think it’s personal preference. If you’re going to spend the bucks to get top of the line, take the time to shoot them all and decide what YOU like.

Someday I’ll buy another bow and get back into the sport. The first bow I’ll try is a Mathews, but I will shoot others just to be sure.

This is a great time to buy too. Be sure to let us know what brand/model you settle on.

    bp –

That might work! I’m really looking for walleyes and panfish.

I don’t claim to be an expert on the river, but rarely go home skunked.

I don’t have any concrete dates for when I’ll be up next summer, but let’s keep in touch – maybe we can work something out.

    Bret –

I hope to meet you and many others on here someday soon.

About where does pool 8 start?

I’ve often got an empty seat in my rig on pool 4 as well

    It does.

Man, I know the quickest way to learn something new from another angler is to go fishing with them. Well this site is the second – except you get info from 20 guys with probably a combined experience of 100’s of years of fishing – I don’t know how old you guys are, or how long you’ve been fishing, but I’m sure I’m way low on the experience.

Thank you all so much. I’ll be sure to let you all know how I do.

I didn’t even know there was a catfish forum. Normally I’m reading the walleye stuff – I’ve been on here every free second today reading about cats.

Seems like theres more than one “real character” in this neighborhood of IDA I’ve enjoyed the good natured ribbing going between you all as much as the information.

Looking forward to getting to know you all as I go.

    Thanks to everyone,

I’m already picturing some spots I want to try. Heck, I’ve even got the Abu’s you guys mention sitting at home with 5 colors of leadcore on them. Now I just need to buy a couple counting reels to put the leadcore on. Then I’ll put the abu’s on some cat rods, spool on the power pro and I’m good to start.

    Brian-
You mentioned that the channels are more active in the spring while the flatheads get going when the water warms up……

Do the channels keep going throughout the summer, and are they found in the same places?

Also, is the presentation the same/similar to fishing for flatheads.

Thanks to everyone for your help – It looks like I’ll be reading for a while. I’m sure I’ll be back with more questions.

I can’t wait to try something new!

    BrianK,

The answer is yes – both. It’s the flathead variety that has really got my attention, but I’ve caught a few of the channels too and am interested in knowing the difference between the two species as far as technique goes.

    Let’s start with the flatheads.

    Teach me master, I’m listening.

    Hi,

I mentioned earlier this week that I saw a buck chasing does in my backyard.

I wonder if our easy winters of late have somehow caused the youngest does in the herd that might not have been bread in the fall to continue to cycle throughout the winter?

The bucks are always willing, so if there’s a doe out there that smells hot its game on for them.

Whitetails are so adaptable to change. It seems logical to me that their species would be some of the first to start to change with the apparent climate change – even if it’s only a few year (or decade) detour from “normal” winter weather.

Fresh scrapes and rutting activity in Minnesota during the month of February is quite odd, isn’t it?

    Cool!

I would like to see a pick of the new snare. Maybe I’ll snoop on line for one.

As much as I admired my Grandpa and loved going with him to check his traps on the weekends it always bothered me a little to come up on an animal he’d caught in a pan trap. So many of them had obviously been struggling for a long time. Thankfully grandpa quickly put them down with his 22.

As a teenager, I actually bought a dozen traps to start my own “line”, but never did it. I think it was that little part of me that was bothered that kept me from doing it. I wish I could have, because there was so much of trapping that I loved.

    BrianK,

As a very young kid (8-12 y.o.) I use to follow my grandfather on his trapline. Where we lived in Northwest MN we didn’t have any coyotes, but we had a lot of fox. He also trapped coon, beaver and mink.

He used “pan traps” made by Blake and Lamb mostly, but did use snares as well. Every year he would catch someones poor farm dog. This was an area where people were spread out several miles apart.

I would not recommend snaring or trapping as close to a residential area as you seem to be.

Would a shotgun work? Rifle seems dangerous, but if it’s legal, and you know the area you are shooting in, I would think you’re alright. Maybe keep your caliber small and only take the close shots.

I personally have never “hunted” predators, but have always wanted to. Seems like it would be fun and very challenging.

    Turk,

What year was your Merc? Did you get a decent trade-in value? I’ve got a ’01 50 Merc 2 stroke tiller that I would love to trade someday on a 4 stroke or e-tech but doubt i’ll get much for it since everyone seems to be getting away from the old 2 stroke technology. Probably isn’t much demand for my motor.

Maybe I’m better off just getting a whole new rig

    MWChiefs,

I live on Brooks Ave. As you are heading down Pioneer from the high school it’s the hill you see on your left as you pass my street.

I’ve personally seen a very nice buck on the hill behind the middle school – it’s cool to see them up on top of a bluff like that looking at all us “little people” below.

Unfortunately, for some reason I don’t think you can take a buck within the city limits during the bow season. Someone correct me if I’m wrong. Seems that maybe they’d get a few more hunters in-city if they allowed them a buck. Maybe they could make them take a doe first, or something. I don’t know. All I do know is that there are a TON of deer within the city limits of Red Wing.

That’s it. I’ve got a free morning Saturday. The pup and I are going exploring around the Hay Creek Management area. It’s pretty big and there are some spots I haven’t walked yet.

    Thanks for the idea Lip!

Hopefully we’ll find a shed. The very first time I ever went shed hunting I was successful within the first 15 minutes of my walk with 2 5x sides that didn’t match.

I can’t tell you how many miles I’ve walked since looking for sheds and haven’t found a thing. With the snow nearly gone, maybe they’ll stick out a bit.

Question: Has anyone ever trained a dog to hunt for sheds? I wonder if it’s possible?

I’ll let you know how I do
