Hey bearcat! It’s on the Tower end. Stunts bay is just over the hill to the Northeast. McKinley is just a couple miles…

The TUCR 42″ LTP is awesome and I can imagine that it would be for any larger species! Drug a damn near 60″ Sturgeon out of Lake Superior with it last Spring, the rod was folded in half and didn’t let me down (see picture on left)! )

Curious on the ice conditions? Anyone been out in this lake or burnside?

Hey Guys, I thought I would give an update. I did get out today and am happy to say I’m still alive to give the report of my experiences. Really wasn’t as scary once I seen so many people and houses this afternoon. Didn’t get out to the lake until around 2pm, just carried out the bare essentials glad that I left my house at home this time, the first part of the trek out was a little “un-even!” Thank you guys for your willingness to help and your insight and tips!

Stopped into Marine General prior to heading out and one of the patrons overheard that I was after Lakers and gave me some good tips on lures and such. I spent about 4 hours out on the lake with little movement on the Vexilar. No Lake Trout. Went and conversed with a close neighbor and came back to the hole to find this 57.75″ Lake Sturgeon. It was honestly the fight of my life! My arms still hurt. At one point I thought for sure I would lose it, as it drew line off of my spool to the point of where I could see the knot. Was able to gain line back, land the fish, take pictures and measure, before releasing it back into the lake. Thank goodness for fellow sportsmen, as that neighbor I mentioned ran over quickly when I hollered for help. I honestly would have probably lost the fish without his assist. He also took the picture and measured for me once the bugger was iced. Amazing guy and amazing fish. Once in a lifetime experience! I also have to give kudos to TUCR, my LTP was literally bent in half for the entire fight! Great job Guys!

Hey Guys, I have never tried Superior before. Looking at the possibility of getting out there tomorrow (2/23) in the afternoon for a couple of hours. If I’m honest, I’m a little sketched out to even step out on the ice up there.

    Questions:
Wondering are the current ice/wind conditions safe? I know it can change quickly, any opinions on if it will be safe tomorrow? What should I be looking for as a sign to either get off the ice or not go on it at all. Finally, is there a spot that is usually more safe than others?

I would like to fish Duluth area, but am open to heading further North (within and hour) if that means a safer experience. I am planning on stoping into Marine General to pick up some tackle, any pointers on what they’re biting on?

My luck I will end up being the “Citiot!” But, with a little help from you all maybe I could avoid the Darwin award!

    Thanks in advance!

I put mine on the bar above my head in my cottage, one angled back the other angled forward. Always used a lantern in the past. These are amazing lights and they seem really well built.

That was really helpful Kevin! Thanks. Keep the good advice coming everyone. I’m gaining some confidence already.

Forgot to mention: thanks for the picture James. I’d be really happy catching just one of those! Looks like Burntside is going to be on the list for this year.

Is there a time of year that is best for Lakers? Also, are there other “easy access” lakes that house Lakers? or is it mainly the ones mentioned?

Any insight into what makes Lakers “Hot or Not?”

Hey all, Thanks so much for the input! I appreciate the insight into tackle and equipment.

So would any of you guys say that it would be worth it to head to either of the lakes mentioned unguided and give it a shot? If so, what kind of structure should I be targeting? Seems I remember somebody saying steep drop offs? Thanks!
