When they drop leaves it’s a mess but it’s only a problem if you rake them which I would guess you don’t. Just take the mower and mow ’em up. I always made a pile around the base (this was when they got large) the leaves would hold the moisture from winter and jump start them in the spring.

Who is planning to plant trees this Spring? For those who are, what are you planting? It’s hard to imagine but a lot of the nurseries around here are not only taking orders (but filling up for the Spring Season). If you haven’t ordered but want to plant a large quantity of small trees, check with your local soil conservation district as some still have availability and sell them to landowners at cost.
We plant trees every year, but the deer are hard on ones we can’t protect at the hunting land. This year we are dialing back the number of trees and will be purchasing larger trees and fencing/protecting what we can.
Homestead List:
-x5 6-10′ potted maples
-x15 3-4′ potted norway spruce
-x2 8′ potted willowsHunting Land List:
-x250 white pines
-x100 red oakGet those Willows in a low wet spot and they will double in size every year.
February 25, 2025 at 1:41 pm #2319827All your work is beautiful. I love the woods carvings. I really like the owl, one of them would look great on my front steps. If you ever have a owl around for sale I would love to make a offer.
You’d need to drill into your steps and install an anchor. They’d steal that in a nano second.
February 25, 2025 at 11:03 am #2319775The burbs have taken over AA and it’s not turning back. Enjoy the A tournament for what it is. Look at Andover… wasn’t even a school in the 90s and now they’re perennial state contenders out of one of two “Northern” sections. They were in my section in high school, but we never played them because they were in the play in game every year. And I remember having no clue whatsoever where Andover was. 15 years later they’re double state champs in boys and girls.
It’s funny you mention Andover. I was there little over a week ago for a district squirt tournament. It was held at the community center, they had 2 rinks, pool and who knows what all else under one roof. I recall thinking I wonder what this buiding costs. One thing about hockey…the associations will spend whatever they need to too try and compete.
February 25, 2025 at 10:06 am #2319764I’m guessing High School Football in Texas generates the same excitement.
I always wonder would we embrace the tournament the same way if they wouldn’t have split into classes? Seems the underdog coming from up North always gets a little extra attention.
February 25, 2025 at 8:10 am #2319729In theory it’s a good idea. However when you don’t staff it you make payment and safety optional which is a no go for most law abiding people. I’m sure a few here would be pleased if they were able to “scam” the state by not paying the 50 cents or whatever the cost is for a ride.
I read last year they are still pushing to put in a line from Duluth down to the Metro. Another boondoogle that will cost billions and serve practically nobody. Where in the world do these guys who approve of these things come from?February 25, 2025 at 8:04 am #2319728Fired up the grill last night.
I’m also a guy who hates the dark. I like daylight and it’s even better if the sun is shining.
February 24, 2025 at 8:30 pm #2319698I don’t care how many they haul it’ll never make a nickle. When I rode it you paid on the honor system. Nobody on the train at all collecting funds or making people pay. I really wonder how many paid. I’ve read thats also a major problem on the other lines as well as the crime.
February 24, 2025 at 7:30 pm #2319681I only care who comes from the North. It’ll be fun when they get going.

Maybe if people didn’t buy so much on-line and in the big boxes we might have a few mom & pop shops around.Who buys bait from a big box store? The only one I know is Scheels which is very inconvenient.
Bottom line is it’s low margin, long hours business. I don’t understand who would want to own a bait shop.
Ever ask a bait store owner for a fishing report? All of them say “don’t know cuz I got no time to fish. I’m always working.”
My point Matt was every Jig, Spoon, Rod & Reel bought elsewhere contributed to the loss of the local shops. I’ll agree no bait shop alone will survive selling just bait. Even somebody like Vados sold tackle and equipment for years.

Probably contributed to the heart issues.
I don’t like the show, never have. He seems as phony as a $3 bill to me. But I’m sure I like things others don’t….to each their own.

February 24, 2025 at 11:19 am #2319562Question for you guys. Is it all catch & kill or are you releasing some? At what size (if any) do you decide to release vs kill?
February 23, 2025 at 10:32 am #2319453Leave the 1 oz DareDevils at home unless you are trolling. When using DareDevils either casting or trolling I like a jerk and flutter presentation. Give the bait a hard rip then give it slack. The flutter when the spoon starts to fall will trigger the bite as soon as you pick up the slack and start moving the spoon forward again.
A white Twister Tail also works well. For me a spot of Red in the gill area of a crank bait seems to help although many say fish are color blind.
Always, always wet your hand before handling Pike if you intend to release it. That protective slime helps them stay healthy.
Lastly, you will be using good gear with decent line strenght if you are targeting Pike. Don’t mess around playing them if the water is really warm. Hook ’em up and get them in the boat. They stress pretty easily in warm water.
February 23, 2025 at 10:10 am #2319451The girls wanted to sled yesterday all afternoon on the hill and today they want the bounce house outside on the bare lawn.
Drove over and watched the people climb the ice walls and then went over and watched the little kids on the sledding hill.
Certainly felt better than -25.

February 19, 2025 at 12:21 pm #2318638Years ago in down cycles it was known as “the dead sea”
Years ago there was no sewer system keeping the lake water clearer.
Years ago you rented a cabin and stayed for days, now people blow up there from the metro several days a week during a hot bite.
Years ago the DNR wasn’t afraid of GLIFWC.
Things change.
February 18, 2025 at 7:58 pm #2318502Look around the Ash River Visitor Center. You will be on the East end of Kab, West end of Namakin. Lots of protection from the wind. Straight out from the landing there is a site and I think it has a dock although I’m not sure. From there look for a site in Lost Bay. While the wind can blow straight down there the fishing can be pretty good.
Be sure you plan for black flies and mosquitos, that time of year they can be fierce.
Good Luck.

That would not be good for humanity.Do you think the bum on the street will get the same health care as Pohlad,Gates,Musk?
