It is much easier when the wheels doing the turning are on the same end as the hitch. I have only used this on hay wagons but it made backing way easier.

I don’t see how the turning radius would be any different depending on going forward or backward.

Red Wing Newspaper has more on the story:

RED WING — After a vehicle fell through the ice and sunk over forty years ago, many had given up on finding the remnants. Without the technology to find it or the resources to acquire it, the search was declared unachievable — until recently.

Earlier this year, Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office acquired new sonar equipment for one of their patrol boats. During a test run, Sgt. Scott Powers discovered the vehicle sitting at the bottom of the Mississippi River. But due to strong currents and high water levels in the river, authorities had to hold off the search.

On Thursday, July 20, the Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office dive team was prepared to recover the vehicle situated near the levee wall. With an idea of why it may be there, it was necessary to recover it, deputies said, in case a body was still inside.

After several hours, the dive had proven to be one of the most challenging for the dive team yet.

“We’re dealing with a no-visibility situation here,” said Steve Sutton-Brown, the dive team leader. “On top of that now, a strong current and unknown entanglements that might be on the vehicle. For us it was a very challenging dive but very rewarding.”

For 20-minute intervals, three divers were prepared to begin latching ropes to the vehicle underwater in order to bring it to the surface. The team managed to first pull out the front axle of the vehicle, with the second extraction holding the remainder.

    Finding closure

The vehicle, a two-door 1975 Chevrolet Malibu matched a story on police record from the 1970s.

“We now know the vehicle belonged to David Jorgensen who was last seen on February 27, 1976, on Trenton Island,” said Paul Gielau, Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office patrol commander. “In early-May 1976, (Jorgensen’s) body was located on the Wisconsin side of the Mississippi River in an area known as Warrentown. The location of his vehicle had been unknown for the past 41 years.”

Jorgensen was 24 years-old when he went missing.

The recovery helped answer questions for family members and friends, including Jorgensen’s sister, Nancy Falk. “I’m just hoping that now we can all begin to find some closure,” she said.

The recovery was a group effort, with Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota State Patrol, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Red Wing Fire Department and Siewert’s Towing and Recovery pitching in to make the day a success.

“They were all professional and helpful,” Falk said of the people who take part in the recovery. “I am extremely appreciative of all they did. It is because of their skills that we will have closure.”

I talked to one of the Sherriff’s and he said they found it when they were testing out a new sonar. Didn’t think to ask what brand. I have been over that spot a lot of time and never saw it but I don’t run side scan most of the time. The Red Wing paper has more info.

The 115 is an excellent motor, quiet, smooth, dependable… Put over 1600 hours on a 2010 with no problems. Only issue I had was the foam air filter disintegrated and since very little of it was inside the cowling I assume it went through the engine. The replacement filter had been redesigned.

    1) 55
    2) 6 years on this site
    3) Most of my fishing info comes from experience, friends, and this site. Read or hear something then go out and try it.
    4) I find most of the info very trustworthy but I’m mostly interested in techniques, tackle, and other hardware. If I were looking for info on where the hot bite is the trustworthiness would depend on who was supplying the info.

Are you also looking to have a DVR? I like having the DVR so I can look back to figure out where I left my keys.

I was out on Monday after work. Started in the head of the lake and worked down. Found a few eaters around Hok-Si-La and Hanson’s Harbor. Even with the water coming up you should be able to find some fish along the usual shorelines and drop-offs.
There was a lot of debris so be careful. Clarity was not great but better than I expected after all the rain.

    From the Mercury FAQ:

    Fuel & Fuel Systems

    Question:
Will the use of fuels containing ethanol void my engine warranty?
    Answer:
Fuels containing up to 10 percent ethanol are considered acceptable for use in Mercury engines. Fuels containing higher levels of ethanol are not considered acceptable for use, and the use of fuels containing ethanol higher than 10 percent can void the warranty.

I have used a Skinzit only a couple of times so… I had a few problems like the skin wrapping around a second time. These issues would likely go away with practice.
For me it was not worth the cleanup time if you only have a couple fish to clean.
I felt there was more waste with the Skinzit verses a knife.
Overall I prefer a sharp knife but if you had a bucket of panfish to clean it may be an excellent tool.

On the subject of your air filter. I had the exact same thing happen on a 2010 Mercury 115 4 stroke, all of the foam was completely gone so all that was left was the plastic cage the foam was attached to. The new replacement filters do not have any foam and will cost you about $80. Funny thing is that there was very little foam in the engine compartment. Hmmm, where did it go then?
Lots of info on this issue if you search “mercury 115 four stroke air filter problems”.

If you are running braid try adding a fluoro or mono leader. Have seen a significant difference in clear to slightly stained water.

Separate rules for each section of river in the MN regulations. I believe the same is true for the WI regulations.

At the confluence, depending you actually have 3 different rules to follow.
    Put basically:
    1. Up the St. Croix you follow the St. Croix border water rules.
    2. Down from the confluence you follow the Mississippi border water rules.
    3. Up the Mississippi you follow inland MN rules.

    Update:
Both ramps at Colvill refroze. Upper ramp has ice about 20′ out and the lower ramp has ice around the corner.
Baypoint has old and new ice.
Couple warm sunny days will open Colvill, not sure what it will take for Baypoint.

The docks were not out last weekend and I assume it could be a couple weeks before they put them in.

Both ramps at Colvill were open but on cold nights the lower marina can refreeze. Had to break some ice last weekend to get out.
Last I checked Baypoint still had ice. I will try to check today.

Do you like the vinyl flooring? I’ve been strongly considering it. How is it when its wet? Does it get slippery? My concern was that I would regret it when I have the wife and kids out and we are swimming and tubing.

I have vinyl flooring in my Commander and I like it better than carpet mainly because it is so easy to clean and hooks don’t get caught in it. I have not noticed any slipperiness when it is wet or even after trying to unhook an angry pike.
I would assume on a sunny day, the floor could get hot for bare feet. Since I don’t remove my shoes when fishing I can’t say for sure.

Thanks for pointing out these products. I have been thinking about the kill switch issue for a couple years and after reading this I’m ordering an Autotether.
Already received my Standard Horizon HX870 marine radio because of a previous post. Dang, you guys are costing me a lot of money but when it come to safety cost is relative.

I do the same, up when on the water and down as soon as it is loaded on the trailer.
I have a heated garage so I’m not real concerned about any residual ice in the lower unit because it will melt as soon as I get it home.
This could be an issue if you get water in the lower unit that freezes before you tilt it down. Not sure how you would keep it from freezing in the lower unless you left the kicker down most of the time. Maybe this is not even an issue?

Got a 1850 Commander last spring and I love it. Tons of room in the cockpit, very stable, high sides for big water… Got this one with the full top and have been surprised how many times I have used it.
Previous boat was also a Crestliner, 2010 1750 Fish Hawk, full windshield. Had over 1600 hours on the motor when I traded. I troll a lot and the 115 Merc trolled very nicely, thus the reason for so many hours on the motor.

$50-$100 extra without even giving it a thought to get a second line on inland waters.

Are you thinking this would this also include the ability to run 2 baits on one rod (i.e. Denver rig)? If yes then I’m definitely in.

Snap weights work very well and you can use different weights for rods on the same side of the boat to keep the lines separated. I will use a 2 and 4 ounce on the same side of the boat or in deeper water or faster trolling speed 3 and 5 ounce to keep the lines apart.
The snaps I use are the Off Shore Tackle “OR16”. They have a pin in the middle of the pad that keeps them from coming off the line. Pick up a few bell sinkers and you are ready to go.
Unless I’m fishing really clear water, I place the weight 5-10 feet ahead of the bait. This allows for netting fish or cleaning off weeds without having to remove the weight.
I have replaced all but 1 lead core setup with 30# Suffix 832 braid and run snap weights most of the time. This also allows me to use the same rods for other applications i.e. long lining, 3 ways…
