Tough to convince him when his first opener found a couple of does a bit too far up the trail, and then later, when he turned to see what the noise behind him was (it was only gramps) he had a nice doe jump right beside him over a log. When I asked him why he didn’t shoot it, he said “the neighbors house is right behind where she went, so I couldn’t.” Smarter than the average hunter! But, he got the thrill of being that close….

Recently I bought some super line on a super sale and decided to use it for backing on my ice spinning reels. As long as i do not use an oily scent it should last for a few years. Now I can back to back uniknot about 40 ft of mono. This allows me to experiment with lines and to keep less twist and coiling by replacing it. I like tectan, berkely clear ice, and had good results with the heavier jigs with seguar floro ice in 4lb. I am also old an prefer to use 3lb and up if possible. I recommend for the old or clumsy using a Ty-rite Jr. to hold the hook and then it is easier to tie a improved clinch knot and you do not drop the hook in the ice and cannot find it. It is important to set your drag right, preferably loosening it when packing for home and setting it before dropping bait down hole.

I like to buy super line on sale for backing on my ice reels. I recently got some 10# tuffline on a super sale. With the superlines diameter matching up well with 2 to 4lb mono i can use back to back uniknots and put on 100 ft or so of fresh mono. Now I can experiment with different brands, easily stripping off the stuff that does not meet my needs. As for brands so far I like trilene clear ice, tectan (very thin) and P-line. I also had some seguar floroice 4# very tough but needs at least a #10 fatboy type weight, any lighter it does not hang straight.
