Haven’t seen this guy in some time but then again I have not fished the rock in about 5 years (hahaha). Good to hear you are still out there JP. Thanks again for teaching me so much about river walleye fishing. Pic from back in the day. And BTW do they still have the launch at the Anchor Inn in Newville?

Joined after meeting Jeff Patrick on the Rock River and he recommended the site to learn more about how to fish that system and get real fishing tips and reports. Which in turn lead me to meet Ed Z (Z-man) then met Randy W. Then I got the chance to fish Pool 4 a couple of times with Z-man where I got to meet the world famous Brian K and Dean. This site and the friends I have made have made me a better fisherman. Plus I snagged some good recipes!!!!

x4 Pass. Know too many guys who under powered and regret it later. Listen to your gut. It is when we don’t that we get burned.

Similarly went through this exercise a couple weeks back on my rig. Different make but similar problem. I put the rig on a flat surface at the house, drain plug in and filled the bilge with water till it covered the intakes and drain. (After I checked the livewells and all pumps). Found the leak. Hose clamp loose on the livewell overflow and the silicone thru the hull failed. Easy but time consuming fix. Good luck.

Inflatable on when entering the boat and off when is it trailered. Passengers…life vest required!

Used to night fishing for walleyes alone trolling weedlines..then it hit me one one day. What happens if I fall in at night…then it really hit me…what happens to my family if I don’t make it..

A life changing thought I did not want to dwell on…

Depend on the trailer..If buying new get the measurements on the trailer from your dealer or go there and measure a similar setup. If buying used again get the measurements.

Online a new one has a beam at 87 inches or 7.25 feet. Say you have 6 inches (just a guess) on each side for the tires and fenders. Not gonna make it.

Have a 2013 Competitor 175 Sport with a 150 Yammie and Kicker. Pleased with the 150 on the back even before I put the kicker on it. My decision was based on my planned use of it as mostly a fishing boat for me and the family. Did not care about max speed but sure glad I have it when I need it for long runs on bago system or Lake Michigan to get home in time…LOL. Have friends who went a 115 on similar sized boats and some regretted it some love it. It is about your use.

I also considered resale value if I ever wanted to sell it. Not that I plan to but most people look for a 150 on back around here for a rig this sized.

And I too similar to you upgraded from a smaller rig (16 footer with a 40h). You will like the rig what ever your decision is. Good luck and enjoy.

99.5% of the time I fish alone. Usually because it is a last minute decision due to work and family commitments. When I do have a partner it is a select few because i will not let just anyone in my boat. As others have said I hate someone who will not put the phone down or someone who does not respect your boat (dropping anchors and stuff). Love getting out with the family and love to take kids fishing. Wish my brother lived closer. We had some great fishing experiences as kids.

Going to be interesting to see how this plays out especially since water stored in the soil hasn’t released yet.

Over 15 years ago I was introduced to the site from Jeff Patrick. He took pity on me in my early days of fishing the rock river and taught me a few thing that with practice made me a better walleye fisherman on the Rock. Not to mention all the laughs I gave him when we would be fishing similar areas and he would be pounding them and I would have zip. Since this this site has helped me get better as a fisherman on many other bodies of water and have made some great friends. Even met a crazy fishing fanatic that did an amazing job at finishing our basement! And we now get to fish together sometimes.

Such a great site and the best part is idiots that try to post garbage here do not last long!

And don’t forget the Brain K snake shooting pic! Still trying to burn that from my head!

Alumacraft site has the HP rating 20 to 50. A 700 pound boat, 76 inch beam, 16.5 foot rig without gear, batteries, fuel and other fun stuff with a 30hp and put two guys in it you may find it a lacking.

Our guy will be 14 in March. Asked last year if he wanted a phone. His response and I quote “No, why do I want one of those things, all my friends do is look at them and get in trouble with all the drama.” Were very proud that he saw the good and bad of it and did not want any part of it. He does now have a phone but does not use it often. Sure that will change but we set limits on his screen time be it PS4 or phone. Reserve the right to look at ANYTHING he does on his phone and ALL texts.

He understands that is just a tool and not a lifestyle. And he would rather read a book, go exercise or goof around with us and the dog.

Set the rules, stick too them and I agree with Randy….talk and explain.

I assume this is a new rig?? or was this used /reconditioned???

If new, I would not be happy. Would you accept a new truck with a deep scratch in the hood?

Minor blemishes that will be bigger issues later need to be addressed

I would not be happy at all. As a proud Alumacraft owner….WOW. Push back hard!

2017 Crew Max with 5.7 engine. Had a 4.0 L 4Runner before that. Love the room, ride, and towing for the truck (17.5ft competitor with 150,9.9 kicker and sometimes a 3500lb boy scout trailer). Family loves it and took it to the Smokey mountains for a road trip. Very comfortable trip and broke 19 mpg on the highway!! Also was surprised that I have never seen so many tundras in one area ever. Seemed like every third truck was one! Back to reality at home and mileage is back to normal. Had a diehard Dodge man in the truck for a road trip for fishing and he was shocked at the ride and interior of the truck. Told him my mileage and he was also shocked as he got worse per gallon based on his driving habits. He stated he would still never own a toyota but he was impressed with it.

Have a friend that has the exact same truck and pulls a 24 foot camper every weekend in the summer. He also loves his truck, towing and ride. WE both did the research also and talked to mechanics. Reliability is rated very high.

Mileage is what it is. Love the towing of my boat and wish I had the truck when my son was a infant. Got more room now when I could have used it back then for when the wife packed the entire house up for roadtrips!!

Again…did I say I love the truck. Tried to get he least amount of bells and whistle because don’t need them.

As a competitor owner and someone who has rode and fished in glass boats my competitor does not ride as well as glass. For me that is ok and I knew that going in. Dean is right on as well. The competitor hull design will not cut the waves as well as a skeeter. Not that it is a bad thing but you need to consider the how, where and the conditions you plan to fish in.

Purchased 2013 Alumacraft Competitor 175 full windshield new. Love the boat and have not had any problem with the boat or motors. A few screws working lose from running but that is minor and expected. Only issues with performance was self induced due to the learning curve (went from a 16 footer with 40hp 2 stroke to 4 stroke 150hp and a 9.9 kicker and a roller trailer). Family loves the boat and ride. Purchased specifically for a more stable platform for the family and to fish bigger water safer (winnebago and lake michigan). Have never heard of a corrosion problem from all the guys I know who run alumacrafts (older and new rigs). Been pleased with the quality, would change some things in the layout but no complaints other than not used enough.

I have no brand loyalty but spent the time to research what I wanted to do with the boat, rode in some friends boat (glass and tin) how I fish, what the family needed, looked at the design, the engineering (yes I am a geek sometimes) and price points. No boat is perfect but match what you want to do with the boats (layout and design).

A good quality boat can feel like crap if it is not the right fit.

Glad to see a few posts on this thread. Go figure, when I decide to give the rock fall bite a shot the river is high. At least is means the system won’t be assaulted like last year. Gotta get back on this system…do miss the fishing..just not the crowds.

    Be well and safe all.

Used to have a 1994 Yamaha 40hp 2 stroke carbed engine on my old boat and ran 100:1 religiously. Trolled ALOT with it and never had a problem. I have run 50:1 in that engine because I had no other choice (Forgot to gas up before I headed to a resort) and had to buy premix at the resort. Smoked a lot more but ran. Went back to 100:1 as soon as I got home.

You can run it but would add some seafoam or Yamaha ring free.

Been running an 2013 competitor 175 Sport that I purchased new. Have the full windshield, wife wanted that and sometimes i love it, sometimes I hate it. Like the stability of the rig for the family though. Wish the ride was better for big water waves like my buddies with glass boats but that is something I knew would be different in the glass vs tin debate. I have a 150 yammie and a 9.9 kicker on my rig. The boat fishes very will for my family, just Me, Mom and Son. I have run all around Winnebago in waves with no problem feeling safe with the stable boat. I also troll Lake Michigan for salmon. It is nice to have the stability when we are on the churned up lakes around here in SE WI.

Have not had any major problems with the boat. Just a few screws I had to tighten every now and then. When I have it was operator error.

Overall you can’t make a bad decision here.
