I have a Garmin gpsmap 78 with a lakemaster chip and it works great for ice fishing or on a boat. I use mine year round. The Garmin marine handhelds are tough and waterproof. I just got my dad one for his birthday with the Garmin upper midwest fishing guide chip. Looking at it last night, it appears to have all the same contours as my Lakemaster chip for the lakes we fish here in MN.

I have a Garmin gpsmap 78 with a Lakemaster chip. It works great. I really like the Garmin marine handhelds, very durable and waterproof. Since lakemaster no longer makes chips for Garmin i just bought the Garmin upper midwest fishing guide chip for my dad. Waiting on it in the mail so i cant say how good it is. But looking at the demo on Garmin’s website it had all the lakes i fish in detail.

Here are some of the walleyes we got into on opener. Fish ranged from 15″ to 19″.

My grandmother has a place on the north shore so I fish Cass a dozen times a year. On opener the walleyes were on steep shoreline breaks near spawning areas in 9′-20′ deep. 1/8th oz jig and spot tail shiner walked slowly down the break early morning and late evening got my two brothers and I our limits. A few jumbos mixed in as well. Night shallow trolling bite should pick up soon. Had to move around to find an active school as most of the spring hotspots had only scattered fish biting very light. Mid lake structure should start holding more fish in a week or two. I will post some pics when I get home.

Not legal or ethical in my opinion. I would see guys pounding crappies under the floating dock in front of my dads cabin on big sandy every weekend. Before they pulled anchor and took off they would sort through the livewell and throw back the smallest ones that would put them over their limit. When I made my way down to the dock I would see crappies floating. We finally pulled the floating dock in closer to shore so it would hold less fish. Sad to see such waste.

So that would mean no shore fishing by the mouth of minnehaha and upstream to the ford dam then? What about launching at hidden falls? Isn’t that within two miles of the ford dam?

We had a blast fishing with you this weekend Chris! You really pulled out all the stops to make sure we had the best chance at landing a “super tanker”. It’s great to fish with a guy who you can tell really wants you to catch a huge fish. The Fishing Queen was just the good luck charm we needed to end the trip. The half an hour she fished with us we landed six fish including that 28.5″. She caught two of those herself. Thanks a lot for yanking my new PB through that hole! It was a really good looking walleye with huge shoulders. Just a solid thick fish. And yes it was on a clown lightning spoon.

Thanks for all the great ideas. In the process of booking a rainy trip with Chris Granrud in early January and couldn’t be more pumped for it.

Haven’t been up for a while but I heard north part of cedar bar in 10 feet for perch. East side of star in 20 to 30 feet for walleye. Good luck.

The oceanaire is excellent. Their shellfish sampler is great. As said earlier it is pretty spendy though.

I always fish the large bar that comes off the east side of the main lake (deadmans bar) or the east side of star island in 24 to 28 feet in August for eyes and do well with crawlers and leeches. If its calm and sunny they go deeper and the bite gets tough. As you said they come up shallow at night and trolling cranks is effective. Good luck and make sure to post how you do.
