How did you go about learning to fish deep? Are you talking outer weedline fish or deep suspended, etc.

Its something i want to get better at, but seems like I go deep for 1 hr or so without a bite, back in I go LOL

When I’m talking about fishing deep its mostly deeper weedlines, but sometimes Deeper rock structure as well. Deep can mean different things to different fishermen. In normal years the weedlines grow out to about 14-18 FOW in my area. Some years it only grows to 10 Ft. and others it grows to 20 Ft. Like others have said, the good thing about fishing deeper structure is that fish often school up in larger schools. Once you locate them its not uncommon to catch 10 or more fish in a small area in a rather short time. The shallow game is more often the one here one there kind of thing. The best way to get started fishing deeper weedlines in to setup a texas rigged worm or a Jigworm and get on the outer weedline and just cover water. Once you catch a fish, either put down a waypoint of throw out a buoy. Most often where there is one fish there are several. once the bite slows down on the Texas rig or Jig worm, switch to a dropshot or Neko rig and you will often catch several other fish. Once you get several waypoints down it often just a matter of setting up a milk run from spot to spot the following times out. often fish hold in the same location from now till late August or early Sept.

    thanks that is very helpful

Here is some good advice for you: when the clarity is <5 the best structure is probably not going to be a good weedline, so look for docks, laydowns, or pads. If you have to fish weeds use SI to find the thickest stuff near deeper water, check out very skinny water near good structure or at dusk.

What do you mean by skinny? Shallow?

looking at the extended forecast, water temps will continue to drop.

do you expect the weeds to be mostly dead by the end of the month?

also, what is the consensus on the tatula CT line? anyone have experience on how they compare to the SV?

I have one Zman original chatterbait and didnt have much luck with it, so haven’t used it much. Also noticed it doesn’t always vibrate right away so I may try the Jackhammer.

What cover are you looking for to be using the chatterbait? I tried mostly on docks and outside weed edge with no success.

Yeah we started up shallow. I tried the buzzbait, probably too long. Looking back i wish i would have tried a chatterbait.

We are fishing 3 in our boat which makes it tough to do any off shore or outer weed fishing, as really only the front guy can have good placement.

Any tips on boat positioning and speeds when fishing jigs/t-tig outer weed edges?

Good point. I forgot to mention I was trying to stay in good green coontail weeds.

I was seeing that temp varied about 2 deg. from one side of the lake to the other.

Looking back, I wish I would have tried the ned rig. I have yet to try that.

I would guess the suckers are under bobbers. If you are hearing about trolling large suckers it might be Muskie guys. Whatever you troll, Spoons, Cranks, Bucktails pump the rod occasionally. When the bait pauses thats when they will hit.

thanks i will remember to try that. like all rookies we usally only tried trolling when we couldnt cast them, basically confirming they werent shallow.

we would just put on crankbaits and try to find the weed edge. which is alot harder than it sounds LOL

Your right Im guessing there will be little vegetation. It will be a learning experience for sure for me. I tried getting into trolling a little last year but not much success. We will probably try to do that. Anyone ever use live bait? I hear alot of people using large suckers

We are planning on try a couple different lakes including and around woman lake.

That helps. pike usually slow down post spawn for a short period of time dont they?

I generally am bass fishing and we have 899SI bird.

Are any of you ever able to see fish when you get into shallow bays/weeds/pads/bulrush?

I have yet to see anything. I have tried a million combos of settings suggested on these boards.

Cool stuff. I will definitely look for green weeds. I was expecting most of them to be brown by then

Do you guys ever fish docks that late (October)?

Nice Fry! Can i ask what setup you use to skip with?

I have tried it with some success. I use a med. spinning rod with weightless wacky hooked senko on braid. Never have tried skipping swimbaits.

We did do well, but that was fishing from 6am to 9 pm with only about a 3 hour break. 30 fish was the guy who did the best. The otehrs averaged probably 15 per day. Had to work for them and covered alot of water.

Do you just just a weighted hook for the wacky rig? I did try a drop shot and didnt have any luck. I am still not used to it tho so it could have been just me.

Got back from the trip. The only thing shallow was dinks. Got 2-3 on a frog the whole trip. Fish seemed to be in 8-12 ft. Bringing a spinner or shallow crank over the top seemed to work the best. Two 5lb were caught both on crankbaits. Managed about 30 fish per day.

What is your go to when the fish are out deeper?

I have an 898 hd si and nothing works past 5 MPH. Not even 2D. Why would this be?

It must have bad placement. It was on the boat when it was bought and we havent messed with it.

Where is the best place for the transducer? Have a 16ft alumacraft 40 HP tiller.

Also, how do you guys use them when targeting weed edges? we have an 899 SI
