My great uncle shot a deer by Wells mn way back when they were less common than a Canada goose. The transition zone was, and still is the best deer area of the state. Look at the stats for the transition zones and the harvest numbers are incredible. The top 20 units blow the doors off the rest of the state.

The logging boom and bust cycle really kicked deer numbers up to an unsustainable level. Now with the logging practices, the higher deer numbers in the north and especially the northeast are probably never achievable again without man stepping in and doing great things to make the habitat better suitable for whitetails.

St Louis county is roughly 1,000,000 acres or 6,860 square miles. And shares a 150 mile border with Canada. Has some remote, rugged wilderness areas and enough security cover and limited hunting pressure to allow bucks to reach maturity. Even with less than ideal food sources or other habitat than endless miles of security cover.

Buffalo County is 448,364 acres or 710 square miles. The number of bucks shot per mile aren’t even in the same galaxy as st louis county.

Wolves kill deer and always have. After digging into the stats on it, the wsi, along with liberal seasons and bag limits affected deer numbers way more than wolves. Have had a legally harvest wolf sitting dead on a table at our deer camp in the first wolf season. Had 2 others trapped off our nw corner. It didn’t magically bring the deer numbers back. When the wolves ate themselves out of house and home and starved out, the deer numbers didn’t bounce back like normal. To get deer back there needs to be a balanced approach to managing habitat, along with predator control and less liberal seasons and bag limits. But all that takes time, sacrifice, money and support from hunters, the legislative body and the dnr. Not just delisting wolves, which I am 110% in favor of. But doubt will happen anytime soon.

Like so many on here have said over and over again, it’s about balance. My grandmother’s family was from nw’er mn and they hated wolves. I personally use to really like them from a level of having zero interaction with them. After owning a deer camp for over 2 decades now in wolf country, I’m not as enthusiastic about them. Still like them, but highly dislike how the only way to describe how they are managed in Minnesota currently is, they are not managed at all. There’s nothing scientific with the hands off approach because they are way past the agreed to numbers for delisting. It’s a social tolerance of them being harvested at all. That’s the biggest thing that bothers me personally within this whole discussion, it has zero to do with wolf population size or if they could withstand hunting pressure. It is all about societies emotions and feelings towards one animal that is highly over glamorized and is an unbelievable cash cow for non-profit organizations. That isn’t going to change. There are 50, yes fifty, 501c3 non profit organizations that sue the feds anytime the wolf is close to being delisted. They have deep pockets, and incredible people able to twist the legal and judicial process into knots that take decades to be undone. I hold out little hope there will be any wolf regulations that involve harvest even if they are delisted as long as we have a governor from the dfl party who puts their handpicked people in the appointed roles within the dnr leadership roles. Those leaders within the state government and dnr will never be pro-wolf hunting until there’s a republican in office. And the likelihood of a non dfl governor in this state anytime soon seems extremely unlikely.

Well said! All the more reason to support S.S.S!

Then sell that acadia and don’t ever buy a mid-size GM SUV again, because they are all garbage (acadia, equinox, whatever else they sell now that is in that segment).

Or any 1/2 ton Silverado’s either. In fact, just don’t ever buy anything from GM ever again! What a garbage company!

I’d avoid any GM product like the plague. We have a a half dozen or more 2016-2017 Silverado’s at my work and all but 1 (mine) has had its transmission replaced within 125-150K miles (3 have even had a 2nd tranny replaced). The one I drive is the only one that hasn’t been replaced yet, but I only have 100K on it, so I foresee a break down at some point this summer…

Called it!!! Not a shocker, but today my transmission took a dump on my work truck. It’s unbelievable to me how these generations of trucks never were recalled for this issue. Looks like it’ll be a few weeks before the new tranny gets here. Right in the prime of busy season! Chevy = GARBAGE!

Had some baby barred owls hanging out in our yard last summer. If you’ve never heard a baby barred owl screech and then suddenly hear that sound echoing from different areas in your yard late at night, it sends chills down your spine. 😆

Check hours on the motor, it is apparently quite common for compressor to go out between 600-800 hours. I had mine go out last year at 588. After researching I learned that it is common once it gets to that point. Other than that no complaints at all.

I’m at around 350, so with any luck I’ll get a few more years out of it.

I have a 1999 200hp Optimax. Last year was my first year with it so I don’t have much for history on it. I know it’s one of the generations that coined the name “OptiPop”, so I’m proceeding with caution. So far it seems to run nice, definitely has a growl. I ran the Merc oil in it last year, but just added a gallon of Lucas 2-cycle synthetic to it this last weekend. Merc oil was $50/gal and Lucas was $30. Maybe I’ll regret pinching pennies, but I think that other $20 is the cost of labeling it a Merc product. We’ll see!

Flame away, but there’s only 1 thing left to do to that monster…. 1 behind the ear. Done! Bad dogs simply need to be put down.

Such a tragic and horrifying story. As a father of 3 girls, I can’t even begin to wrap my head around this and how I can possibly raise my girls without being a completely paranoid helicopter parent.

I really don’t think the lakes north of Hwy 2, or for sure the Iron Range will have open water by opener. In the 10 day forecast, there are only 2 days with overnight lows above freezing, and next Tuesday the low is saying 18…. Not looking good!

The last few days up here could easily be passed off as January weather. High of 23 today…. Supposed to get down into the low teens tonight. We’re still making ice in mid-April!

as long as there is cash, there will be coin. I will be long dead before cash as currency is bye bye.

You on your way out or something? Many in the Govt pushing hard for a CBDC. It’s coming, whether we like it or not. I’ll give cash 2 more years, tops.

On the podcast or tv show? There are commercials for sure on the tv show, but I dont see him advertising this scent killer, line of boots, trail cameras or insert other products here during the actual episodes.

The show is a constant promo for First Lite, etc. Every person he has on gets decked out in FL. It’s subtle and not in your face like other shows, but it’s in there and definitely being pushed.

Just a heads up that it’s illegal to camp at the fisherman parking lots. Good luck!

Just curious, why do you need the RABC? I thought we could cross freely on water without the RABC or calling in. Or does the RABC allow you to touch land and stay in Canada?

Need the RABC to go up into La Croix in the winter and also folks need it to get into the Quetico.

Does this mean I can get my RABC Permit?

Nope. There are currently no plans to reinstate the RABC program. Hopefully that changes.

    Uggh, what a joke…

Maybe deadly force should be allowed. A couple of these scum bags take a bullet and word gets out that that could be their fate, you bet your arse this shat would cool down real quick.

Its a mess! It’s also dog shat season. When you get fresh dustings most days during the year it’s impossible to maintain and keep up.

    pick 1 and be done!

How the HE11 am I going to know when to change the batteries in the smoke alarms!!

The number of clocks I need to actually change are getting less and less each year. I would prefer to keep it the way it is, but I won’t be complaining if we change.

    (Prediction: we won’t be changing)

Batteries in What? Those need batteries? ;)

I agree, we’ll be barking about falling back an hour again over deer opener.

On a lighter note: this thread reminds me of an old Indian proverb regarding DSL

“Only a white man would think that cutting an inch off one end of the blanket and sewing it to the other end will make it a longer blanket”

    It’s actually “Only the Government….”

I’m with the majority, pick 1 and be done! I’d prefer DST, over standard because evenings generally offer more opportunity to utilize that extra daylight vs mornings. For me, a 9 am sunrise in the dead of winter doesn’t really affect or bother me, but having a 5:30pm sunset will allow me more opportunities after work.

Not so much for fishing, but for sure the recreational boating fun days on Vermilion, VNP will definitely be taking a hit.

Don’t think I’ll make it up to Kettle Falls this summer.

My wife said to me last night she may be able to change her hours at work so we could car pool. Apparently the facial expression I made in my mind I actually made with my face. So I am currently dealing with that….

Saturday looks like mostly rain in the south and snow in the north. If this map proves to be accurate, the snow pack is going to really disappear quick in the south. Check out the temperatures in Iowa…70’s!

So sad. First good sledding last weekend and now it could be over. #%$@&*

Dude, we’ve had great sledding up here the whole winter. You snooze you loose!

I rarely use live bait for panfish. Small tube jigs slowly reeled back to the boat crush crappies and gills. I also have success trolling small cranks for crappies and occasional gills.

I have a hard time going for walleye without live bait on me, unless I’m specifically trolling cranks. I just don’t get to fish enough to master the art of plastics. I don’t have any confidence in them.

I also really like to tip my jigs with some meat when I’m jigging for Lakers. I know I don’t need it, but I definitely think it helps at times, especially in open water when you don’t graph them as often.

As someone who is just beginning to dip their toes into the world of western hunting applications this year, this was an awesome read!

It’s amazing just how ridiculous navigating the rules, applications, draws, fees, etc. just to go out of state to hunt an elk and mule deer are. It’s a bucket list trip for me but I almost want to back out just because it’s so absurd and expensive.

I thought it was a fantastic series! Loved it! Way better than Yellowstone, especially after this last let-down of a season.

From what I understand there is a 2nd season now in the works, as there should be. Seems to be plenty of that story left to be told.

Remember that flash forward to when James stumbles into the home wounded and you hear Margaret screaming and we’re left to assume that’s when he dies? What happened there? Did I miss something?
