Speared my first like today! More like hunting than fishing. I’d go again for sure, but my preference would be to fish versus spear.

I’ve done this 5 years in a row. Can’t make it this year sadly. We stay up way too late drinking the night before. Sled over in the morning. Hungover and catch nothing during the tournament. Couple guys usually nap it off on the ice. I buy cheese curds. More beers. Wait for it to end. Go to Ernie’s for Greenies and spin tales. Complain that we never win. Dream of the truck or ice castle. Do the same thing next year.

Lindy, what size shelter works well for you and your kids? Is that a 4man?

Hey so I want to do something like this with my kids next year. I’m just getting into ice fishing. Should I get a small 1-2 person popup for when I go alone, and a 4-5 person one for when I take the family? Or is the weight/size difference not enough to justify having two different shelters? Would be dragging behind a sled. Thanks

Fished Gray’s Bay for a few hours. Got a small perch and a few sunfish. Lots people out. Wonder why…maybe bigger fish roll through oh occasion, but everything was pretty small tonight. Conditions were just about ideal though.

Lakes are mostly safe for walking except for the usual dangerous areas like inlets outlets and channels.

Nice. So when people are asking about ice, they are concerned with driving their truck or snowmobile out?

Sorry if this is against the rules or whatever, but is there a metro lake I could walk on this weekend with a chance to catch some crappies? This is my first year and I keep getting skunked on the city lakes going for walleye or pike, and see other lakes that are so big I don’t know where to begin. Don’t care about keepers, just want a chance at some decent action. And don’t want to drown. Thanks

Is the sled attached to the skis, or just held on by the strap?

I am new to this game. What does this mean? If they don’t pull it off it’ll be stuck in that one spot all winter?

New to ice fishing this year. I’ve only been out a few times. Skunked every time. Yet I’m hooked and it’s all I think about.

    Wow those are huge crappies!

I am in the metro and this is my first winter ice fishing. Got into it after my father-in-law took me to LOW. Want to fish the Metro but don’t know where/how to start. These posts are inspiration!
