Think horizontal would be better anyways because you can overlap the bottom sheet with the top sheet to stop water leaking? Am I right or have no clue? lol

That’s kind of what I was thinking but every where I have looked they always run them vertical. So I was just checking to see if there is a reason I wouldn’t be able to run it horizontal.

Maybe its more difficult to put up?

I remember when I found my first morels while I was fishing on the river last year….. Found a group of about 6-8 of them, I was excited because I had never found any before. Googled them and confirmed that they were morels because I had heard so many good things about them and how good they tasted. So After I picked them I thought to myself “I wonder what they taste like” (not knowing you’re supposed to cook them) so I took a little bite of one. BAD IDEA. My afternoon fishing trip was cut short by me needing to hit the nearest restroom ASAP. MOREL grin of the story, I found out you’re supposed to cook morels before you eat them otherwise you get a very upset stomach. I did cook them after though and they were really good. So if I find any this year, at least I know now that I need to cook them first!

Definitely look at getting into an underspin reel for him. Then you can at least pick a decent spinning rod to match it.
Also by getting him used to using an underspin reel versus a spincast he will be accustomed to reaching for the trigger on the underspin just like you would on a spinning reel. So whenever he or you are ready to upgrade to a spinning reel it will be very similar to his underspin.

Can you catch big flatheads like that from shore?
Never caught a flathead but would love to hoist one of those in!
I live in Grand Forks and we get some big channel cats but nothing like a flathead. Would like to make a trip somewhere to catch some flats some time!

By the looks of your auger, I better dust of the extension…..

Definitely no need for an extension LOL
That’s just a quick detach and adjustable extension I leave on my auger all the time. Not quite that time of year yet!

The thing I have found with the touch screens is they need to be “grounded” in order to work. By this I mean my friend used one last year and he had to have the ice ducer in the water or holding it in his hand to be able to navigate the screen.

I just tried the transducer and screen not working at the Cabela’s store and had no problem navigating the touch screen with my other hand. Tried both with and without hold the transducer. I thought that was a weird occurence and I don’t see why that would ever happen unless you had a faulty unit or bad transducer.

Huh, I’ve never heard of that beating a problem. The navigating the screen part and the puck. I wonder why that would be. Has anyone else had that problem or can expand on that aspect? I haven’t bought one yet but now I might be leaning towards something with buttons.

I’ll probably make a few flouro ones just to try it out. I have plenty of wire ones. Like Will said though my previous experience with flouro is that it gets hit more often than wire but I wasn’t sure about it because I haven’t seen many flouro sucker harnesses for musky.
I’ll see if I can make a few and maybe post a picture of my results.
I’ll have to check out the “bridling” Will, not quite familiar with that. Sounds like a good alternative because we will be trolling 14-20″ suckers.

I personally tried this last year because I know a few clam reps and they told me to try it and I thought it was pretty gimmicky. So I went up to Winnipeg and tried out a few of my own modified cranks and boy did they work! Caught a lot of fish on the Rapala DT series cranks along with a few shad raps of various sizes and colors. The only flaw I had with them was that often times the fish wouldn’t inhale the whole bait so the lip of the crank would catch on the bottom of the hole, and with Winnipeg not being a very deep lake, by the time you hooked a fish and got it to the bottom of the hole that fish was still large, in charge, and not ready to come up lol So I lost a quite a few fish from that, but besides that it was really fun to try something new and see how the fish reacted to it!

+1 what Mocha said! Don’t get me wrong you’ll catch fish doing one of the day houses and it will be more comfortable but you may not catch as many fish. Coming to Devils is about catching the elusive jumbo 12-15in perch and you’re better off finding them by going with a guide and portables to stay on top of the fish!

Lost my picture of a 14.75″ out of Devils lake but here’s the biggest one I pulled this year out of Devils lake 14.25″! Man they’re fun to catch when they get big!

Good question, I run braid on most of my reels and I love it. As far as putting on a leader or flouro or mono it depends on the type of fishing I’m doing. For ex: pulling cranks I don’t ever use a leader for that. As far as everything else I still run a leader. I’ve noticed even in stained water braid can still make a difference with catching fish or not catching fish.

Woodland is a great place. They’ll definitely give some some pointers on where to start looking to fish. I fish devils about once a week during the winter and typically walleyes are easy to come by. As far as perch goes, I like to “ice troll”. I usually will get to a spot and pop about 10 holes and fish them all and if I don’t catch a fish within 20-30min, I’m on to the next spot trying to locate a big school. Once you locate that school its all about keeping them interested because if they lose interest those perch are gone. Fast sinking lures that get back down to the bottom are key. The minnow head hook has been really good for me because you can thread on the minnow head to the shank of the hook and perch can’t rip it off as easily.
Oh and don’t forge to bring an extension for your auger!

I fished devils last thursday. Had about 6″ of ice just west of grahams. Fished on the outside of the trees in about 15ft, picked up a few walleyes right at dark. Other than that everything was pretty finicky.
