If you are looking for a cheaper set up check out a 38 inch frabil pike rod in the medium heavy plenty of back bone and the medium heavy cushion handshakes nicely. Pair that with a decent reel that have a nice drag system and away you go. Also jason Mitchell makes a nice lake trout rod in a baitcasting model and spinning model

August 4, 2017 at 9:16 pm #1708486Thanks for the info guys it helps a lot I finally found some around and was able to look at them first hand so that helped
July 5, 2017 at 9:24 am #1702424This is an awesome read. I have two cheap 10wts and they work well but the right line is critical. I want to get an aggressive line in a full sink 3 and a sink 5. What do you guys think? What grain?
July 1, 2017 at 11:42 pm #1702033Not a trophy but nice fish and back on point lol. Caught 15 feet of water during a mayfly hatch throwing spring dogs walleye pattern working fairly fast. This time of the year is awesome for big pike with this pattern. It’s not a numbers game but you can get giants if you stick with it.

June 30, 2017 at 4:15 am #1701812That pike was not a big pike. 37 inches or so. I’d guess 13 – 15 lbs fresh off the spawn. My fishing partner caught me with the photo turning toward the camera with the fish held out as I stood to clear it from the net. All my big <strong class=”ido-tag-strong”>pike were held with two hands horizontally. You’d know that if you were there holding the fish. Like I was. Instead you get to cock off online, insinuating a lack of good judgement and ethical treatment of fish with absolutely no firsthand knowledge of the size of the fish or how the fish was actually handled.
Guys like you are why guys like me post less and less online.
Have a nice day.
[/quote]Perfectly said. Everyone thinks that a fish being held even for one second vertically is going to die. Yet you always see bass pros braking jaws by grabbing the bottom lip and tilting it sideways with one hand or guys ice fishing and once they get a big walleye or other fish they lay it on the ice to take the hooks out. People who know James understand he is a huge embasitor of fish Conservaion. I will probably get backlash for chiming in but ow well.
June 13, 2017 at 12:01 am #1698796Lol I knew that as soon as I sent it lol that was a little to late in the night for me if you know what I mean
May 20, 2017 at 2:22 pm #1695142O got ya. Ya I got a lot of different models but rapala only offers so many colors of certain models and they will discontinue colors from models. For instance you may not find a shad rap color in a f9.
May 20, 2017 at 1:14 am #1695106And are you sure they are the f9 model because for years I have been looking for them and hadn’t had any luck. That’s strange there are a lot at a place like that.
May 19, 2017 at 12:05 am #1694922Wow thank you I was scrambling so fast to make a pay pal never bought anything off eBay hope I don’t get ripped off. I bought all 4 that he had and if anyone comes across anymore I will take them for a reasonable price. Thank you guys and rapala please wake up and offer a custom opportunity where you can get any rap with any paint job I would pay extra for the service.
May 15, 2017 at 11:18 am #1694132Well we went up to gunlint lake this year for opener and caught some very nice fish and a lot of species we caught nice pike, walleye, and lake trout. Lakers were down 30 feet over a steep break the topped out at 35 to 45. One we fished on Friday ( Canada Border Water) so it’s open all year round for pike caught two that were around 35 inches and pre spawn. We were fishing a number 5 mepps spinner. Now one thing I’m bitter about is the lure that I was catching a lot of walleyes on is a discontinued rapala it’s an f9 hot tiger so an orange fire tiger pattern that has caught literally hundreds of fish for me and I lost it and don’t have another one. Why can’t you get any rapala in any model? Ugh well o well. I had my fun with it.
May 4, 2017 at 3:23 am #1692173You guys still did put the smackdown on those fish that’s for sure. The prop wash can be a good spot to catch kings to. I have fished it the wash over 80 feet with success. The only thing I will say is deeper diving cranks seem to hold up better in the wash. Some lures wash out and won’t hold there pattern. I have found the shad raps work well and most other deep diving cranks.
April 21, 2017 at 5:49 am #1689716Cast the shore for salmon it’s a little late but there is a chance. There is fish all the way up into Canada. Every decent size river will hold fish.
April 21, 2017 at 5:45 am #1689714For trout I like maxima ultra green. It is one of the most invisible lines in our minnesota waters. 6lbs will be perfect. One other thing that is a huge benefit is that it has a lot of stretch and how that benefits you is that it cushins the handshakes a lot better resulting in more land fish and less lost fish. Being from the Duluth area we get up the shore to chase steelhead and maxima ultra green is the number one line in 6lbs. Hope this helps.
April 21, 2017 at 3:15 am #1689708I love my Abu Garcia revo toro beast. I have a high speed but I can still pull 10s with it all day. It is also able to burn bucktails. It is my number one reel I have two and one winch that I also love. However for smaller bucktails I believe you want to be able to burn them and the winch wouldn’t be my first choice to burn bucks with. Where the winch shines is big bucktails and high resistance baits such as big crank baits.
April 6, 2017 at 10:03 pm #1686993Very nice thank you I have just used my musky rods and they have been fine but looking to become more specific
April 3, 2017 at 10:35 pm #1686285Oct 14th and 15 great payouts and prizes for a small tournament. Hope I can make it this year.
March 8, 2017 at 2:56 pm #1679801This is coming from minnesota so our season opens a little later than most so take this with a grain of salt. Pike in most lakes never leave the weeds in the winter. One thing to look for as far as location is find out where the spawn. They are one of the first fish to spawn and will be in between the wintering areas and spawning grounds at this time. As far as baits you can never go wrong with blades just think smaller like number 5 mepps spinners slow is a good idea but let’s remember pike are a cold water fish so they will still be active during this time so you can get away with crank baits and things of that nature. As far as muskie our season up hear opens to late for me to truly pattern them. I would think they would be more into the slow and small baits. With both species understand that suckers will be schooled up at this time as well so they will be hot on there tails. Good luck hope to see a lot of pics of giant fish!
March 8, 2017 at 5:03 am #1679616Haven’t fished one yet but they feel nice in hand a little heavy but they have all the great features that the big tranx do for 200 off. I would pull the trigger if I wasn’t in love with my Abu Garcia’s. You won’t be disappointed I am sure.
January 22, 2017 at 7:16 pm #1667605Yes that’s what it is its set up as a musky Inc tournament but it’s public with some awesome prizes and payouts.
January 9, 2017 at 11:05 pm #1663996Fishing has been fairly good around the area for multiple species. As for the harbor people have scooted out towards the channels with good success. However there will still be a good bite on the flats. The bite has been fairly consistent during the day with the better fishing being the early and late hours. My rule of thumb is to target the deeper areas during cold fronts and high barometric pressure. And target the flats on the rest. There have been some bigger fish being caught as well.
Outdoor advantage is a good bait shop in cloquet with everything you would need. In duluth mariene general is the way to go a little out of the way but they have a better minnow selection other bait shops are a bit out of the way like fisherman’s courser and chalstrams
January 2, 2017 at 7:59 pm #1661593For pout and crappies you need to get up river. The harbor is more walleyes and random sturgeon. The deal with them being so far out is that where they are fishing is a big feeding flat so it’s not so much spot on a spot it’s more of a pick a spot Swiss cheese it and see what happens. This is the case all the way until shipping season is over than you can fish a little deeper water then I becomes more spot on a spot type of fishing.
