I think regardless of your age, this is the most unusual/warm winter any of us have seen. I took my boat out on an 800 acre lake near Hayward on December 29th. I’m still limited to the lakes that I can fish and after the rain haven’t been on one with more than 4″ of ice.

Hopefully the cold snap this weekend opens up(maybe I shouldn’t use that term!) some lake options, even if it is still just foot travel.

What an amazing rig! The boat, motor, accessories and rigging are absolutely top notch and incredible. It must be rewarding to be able to get into a rig like that knowing you made your own success.

Many congrats James. You made it happen. How awesome is that!

It must have been a bogus report. I’m about 2 hours south of Duluth. I fished out there two different years but I didn’t expect to this year with the much more mild temps.

Was surprised to hear “they” were out there. Sounds like “they” must not have been.

Interesting. It was actually yesterday morning someone said they were fishing by 21st street. It surprised me as I didn’t think we had the weather needed to set that up this year and as mentioned it was windy yesterday.

I heard a rumor that people were out fishing around Duluth recently. Any truth to that? Anybody get out?

I probably won’t be able to make it this year unless something unusual happens weather wise but always fun to read reports from the big lake.

How about a price drop on both?
$60 shipped for the walleye rod.
$70 shipped for the Al Dente.

Buy both and I’ll ship them to your door for $120.

Thanks Bearcat! After having a couple kids etc., I didn’t have much time to build the last couple years but hoping to spin a few up again every now and then.

Either the guide foot adhesive that you get at mudhole etc or i also started using some stretchy elastic type cord i bought at walmart that’s used for making bracelets and necklaces.

Think of the bracelets kids make with beads – it’s the bright colored stretchy cord found in the craft/jewelry making section. Works well for static testing too as you can move the guide around to get placement correct. Tie cord on and slip guide under. Start to wrap guide, then cut cord.

Sometimes i still use the guide foot glue in addition to the cord as i feel it offers a little cushion between guide and blank.

Sounds like the dog needs rope training and yes maybe an e collar. But be careful with the collars. Trainer and dog needs to be ready for it. Thowing a collar on and zapping the dog is not good to the dog, or effective.

Really at any point, scolding the dog wasn’t necessarily the thing to do. Maybe a little bit right at the moment of the dog not obeying. It was certainly too late after you got home.

If you scold a dog randomly, there’s a good chance they’ll look sad, even if they did nothing wrong. Correction has to be at the time of the issue. Even a minute or two later is too late.

Their power cables are cheap enough that it’s probably worth getting one for the ice rig vs cutting it out of your boat and swapping back and forth.

I think your list is good. I also used a blue Genz Box and added a transducer cord hanger and 2 rod holders from Bass Khang and liked it last year.

If you want to do it, start looking for a transducer asap. If you want the newest version they were very rare last year. I ended up buying a used one in February as no new ones were available. I think the CHIRP ducer is the 1521 model if I remember correctly.

How about $50 shipped? I also see I spelled Lowrance wrong in the title. Doh!

Never used, just drug down a few gravel roads and stored in a barn for the last 15 years.

Adam, I’m not sure how to tell the difference between the transducers, but I think Humminbird puts the model number on one of those yellow tags. Maybe with some research I could figure out how to know if that’s the 1521 though.

If the original buyer gets his ducer and anyone else is selling I’d be interested too. I had one on order/backorder since October and the order was recently cancelled.

Maybe try sending something down 10, 20, 30, 40, etc feet away and see if it reads it.

Thanks for the feedback Loren. It just so happens I picked up a Digger carrier yesterday at Fleet Farm. It also has the narrower caps.

I just off the phone with them at Digger and they said they are still working on producing the new style caps in volume. They have had some in the past but the cost to produce was too high. He said keep checking back and hopefully they have something available this year.

In the mean time, I’m going to make myself a new cap to get me by for at least now.

I’ll be curious to hear what you get. Did you have to pay for the lite flite cap?

I seem to remember calling them last year and the cap was an extra purchase but I might not remember correctly. I’m on the fence between ordering the Digger carrier or making myself something.

I bet if you kept a bigger cooler in your house over night to stay warm and put the Engel in that along with a hand warmer or 2 they wouldn’t freeze. Or even pre warm the big cooler with some hot water or water bottles filled with hot water.

I’m actually surprised they are freezing at all in your car in the Engel cooler, but we have had some cold weather lately.

I really messed up by not ordering one at a link that was provided here earlier this year because it was a few bucks more than I thought it should be. Now they are non existent. I look every few days but haven’t found any in stock. Most websites seem to basically backorderd 1 to 12 months.

I’d say 2 or 3 for panfish and 4 to 6 for eyes depending on the size of fish you typically catch and how comfortable you are handling fish on light line without breaking it.

With that said I’ve used 15 or 20 lb seaguar on lakes that have lots of small pike and it doesn’t really seem to reduce the walleye catch rate.

I agree, it sounds like a lot of work and i don’t think it’s needed. Last year was my 1st year with a wheelhouse but here’s what worked well for me:

Lower house half way… if wanted. Can drill with house up too if ice isn’t too thick. House will move forward some when dropping so drill holes towards front of hole opening if house is higher. Leave slush piled up.

Drop house on ice chip piles.

    Insert hole sleeves.

Use biggest Menards paint mixer on cordless drill to suck ice chips down the hole.

This works amazingly well for something like $7. Really don’t have to scoop holes out after this. No big slush bucket. No chips on the floor. No scooping a bunch of chips into a bucket and making trips to dump them out. Seals well around the holes. I don’t bother banking the house if just out for a few hours, but you could if you had other snow on the lake. I’d just use a shovel and shovel some snow up against the house.

Most of the time the very few if any chips remaining in the hole would melt after a bit.

I have Striker Predator bibs and a Climate jacket. Usually wear the jacket without the liner but the liner is also very nice. Worn together cold wind on atv or snowmobile just doesn’t get through.

I like the idea of the float suit. Ice pics still get wore on thin or soft ice. If I go in wearing it I’m not planning to hang around for a while before getting out!
