One Time. It is on the expensive side, but better coverage and durability than the others. Our deck is on year 3, and it still looks like it was just put on.

I didn’t have any issues with the direction, but mine was just sent in for repairs due to the temp and depth not working.

One Time Wood. A little expensive, but it covers well and looks great.

Why not just wrap some Coban or electrical tape around the Bolt and opening? I do this on all my augers to ensure the bolt cannot fall out during use.

Seats, like other have mentioned, gives you more options if you want to remove a seat. The sportsman caddy is a great addition.

I’ve had mine for about two weeks and so far I have nothing but good things to say about it. The auto-depth feature works great and is a nice feature. The vibrant display really stands out. I haven’t had a chance to use the weed mode so can’t comment on it. If its like the other Vexilars I have owned, it should be a long lasting, trouble free unit.

Nextbite, sorry this thread got off-line from your original question “Vexilar or Humminbird.” My advise it go to the local sporting good stores and ask lots of questions on each company and their products. Have them show you the ins and outs of each unit. Any flasher you get will be better than nothing at all.

ps…my offer still stands if you want to see a FL-18 or FL-20 on the ice. I’m out at Big Creek quite frequently.

Additionally, have you ever used or even seen a Marcum next to a Vex?

    CSP88,

The fact that you never answered this question speaks volumes for your credibility when it comes to first-hand knowledge of the product. ‘Nuff said…

Huh???? I did answer your question. You are more than welcome to drive down here and check the stores out for yourself…..I’ll go with ya.

If you can swing it, go with the FL-18. If you find it on sale….even better.

My partner runs a FL-20, but when he fishes with me always seems to need to borrow my spare LX.

I’ve seen you post this 100 times….If he dislikes the FL-20 so much, why doesn’t he sell it and get a lx-5?? He would have no problems getting his money out of the Vexilar.

because of the number of returned units

What in the world are you talking about? Do you have facts to back that up?

Just what I was told when I inquired about why they did not have or carry any marcums at the following stores. What other reason would they have not to carry them if they were the best flasher on the market?? Seems silly to me that if they were indeed the “best” that they would want to carry them since they would be flying off the shelf.

Thanks for all of the information you guys have posted. It has definately helped. I can get a Hunninbird at the new Bass Pro in altoona iowa. Scheels has the vexilars and I think sportsmans has the marcum. I will just have to go in and view them all to really make my choice.

Sportmans in Ankeny doesn’t carry marcums. You won’t find many places in central Iowa that carry marcums because of the number of returned units. If you want to see a FL-20 on the ice I can meet you out on Big Creek and let you try it out for yourself.

While you are comparing prices and function, make sure to compare the dependability of each company’s units. I continue to be a Vexilar user just for this very reason.

I now own a 820 and gave the scout away. With a Marcum it’s like watching HD.

Hence my point, for my type of fishing I don’t need HD to view a brush pile or weedline when my Scout will do the same thing at a fraction of the cost. If you plan on hunkering over a camera all day, by all means, go with the most expensive unit you can afford. Otherwise, if your primary use will be for locating structure, save your money and take the deal on the AV.

It depends on how much you plan to use it and what you plan to use it for. I have the AV Scout and it does all I need it to do. I use the camera mainly for locating structure. The other 95% of the time I’m fishing it sits in the sled. For MY needs, the more expensive units were not justified.

Fiskas Wolfram Jigs, Gold or Silver, size #3 or #4. Tipped with a little atoms micro nuggie, panfish can’t resist.

Bluegill, Walleye and Perch….in that order. All dipped in homemade breading and fried in peanut oil.

Ok I have a vex fl-8. It has been a good unit for me over the past 10 years,

Sounds likes one good reason to stay with Vexilar. Either unit will be a step up for you….but like I tell others, go with the product and company you are most confident with.

A 5″ Lazer would be a better option for panfish. There are not many fish that won’t fit through a 5″ hole. Whatever size you go with make sure it’s a StrikeMaster Lazer.

I would go with an Otter, the durability of the sled and canvas are unbeatable.
