personally, i see all shooting as practice.

i dont know if you are as focused on mechanics when you have a video in front of you, but on the other side, it will help reveal form issues. and also help you decide on waiting for ethical shots.

i prefer to shoot techno with a buddy for the added pressure/distraction/competition and also to have them watch your form when you are concentrated on placement and waiting for the animal to give you the right shot.

im shooting CX MaximaHunter 250s which run ~$150/dz.

i’ve heard nothing but good things about the Harvest Time HT-2s. they run around $120/dz.

Im using 3-blade NAP bloodrunner’s this year. From what i can tell its the best of both worlds. if it doesnt deploy, its still a fixed blade head, and if it does, it cuts that much wider. so far i’ve gotten them to land with my field points out to 40 yds, i havent pushed it further than that, but i dont see a flight difference with them.

I also have a fixed F-15 from CX. (I got in on the free BH giveaway they had last year) It flies even with my BHs too. and I’ve heard they leave great blood trails with those bleeder blades. I mean, look what they do for the “Jug Hunters” on youtube!!

BennyJ got me hooked on the D350 this spring and I haven’t looked back! SUPER fast and surprisingly quiet for a speed bow.

thats a hell of a first bow. grats!
just make sure that whatever you use can keep up with the speed of that thing. otherwise you might be chasing arrows or pulling them out of hte side of your house!

    Carbon Express is pricey.

I just bought a dozen Maxima Hunters at $80 for a half dozen.

I really like them so far, but the price is 150% outside that ballpark you listed earlier.

for that price range, i’d look at the beman ics hunters as well. actually, they are the same shaft as the cabelas stalker extremes. if you go with the cabelas model, you’d save a few bucks.

i like the blazer vanes as well..

i voted #6 and ive used the hevi-13 in 3.5″ with good success.

I smoked the bird i shot. the hevi-13 patterned better at 30 yds than the winchester supremes i compared them too. I shoot a winchester sx2 capped with the stock full invector-plus choke.

last year I’ve promised myself that i will poke the next one with stick and string. but if I went back to my shotty, i wouldn’t hesitate to load up the hevi.

The way i look at it, you only should need one shot for turkeys, so why not make it as good and powerful of a shot as you can. and because of that, I’m ok paying a premium for a better load…

ducks, geese and pheasants are a different story… i need to pull the trigger a little more out there!

I’d recommend one gun for birds (26″ barrel) and a dedicated slug gun (like an 870). Barrels are just too expensive for a top of the line autoloader. Then again, when your buying a $1500 gun, i guess the barrels should cost you $4-500..

bring a video camera next time?? nothing better to show your intent than when you have a real time video of it.

sorry about your bad run-in with an overzealous DNR official. perhaps there are some blatant rule breakers by you and hes just profiling everyone the same…

Ever looked at the fixed Carbon Express F-15s? i’ve heard good performance results after people have sharpened them. i shot the free one they offered last year and it flies as accurate as my field points. its in my quiver, but i havent been able to use it yet.

nice! whats the trick for cooken those mergansers to make em taste good…

best recipe ive heard for mergs and geese is this:

put the breasts into a crock pot and cover them with coke. let them cook on low for 6-8 hours til they start to break up, then empty crock pot into the garbage disposal, crack beer and order dominos.

i had my knee scoped about 10 years ago now. they cleaned up the meniscus, repaired the PCL and MCL, and also had to loosen up the ligaments on the outside of my knee to stop my kneecap from dislocating any more. (damn high school soccer) i was in rehab/physical therapy for ~6 mos trying to get back into playing shape.

best advice i have for you is to constantly fight the soreness by never stop exercising it. and do the exercises on your own. i didnt do any outside training for the first couple months, and i was dying in my therapy sessions. and after about a month of therapy you’re gonna realize how much you can still do and then i would set goals on recovery. i told myself i was going to be playing sports 6mos after my surgery and i was running track and throwing shotput after 5mos.

after about 2.5 years my knee, and i dont need to wear a brace or anything for sports/working out.

hang in there, the hard part is over. youll be running around in no time.

i agree with you nick, their site leaves a little to be desired, but their shop has everything you could ever need. and the service is what sets them apart from the other shops.

stop in and take your time, they will be more than happy to help you out. remember to ask lots and lots of questions!

im bored at work… this is what ive found.

carsons barrels click on misc barrels and scroll down to franchi, they have rifled, full, mod and i/c. that guy is out of arizona.

i tried to find a link for hastings replacement barrels, but it looks like they were sold off to some other company. they might have something too.

heres a question for you… why do you need to shoot your max DL? since you are already maxxing out most bows dl, try shooting 30″ dl. the shorter DL will mean that you have an easier time maneuvering for a shot in close quarters. bennyj showed me that trick this year. plus you can hold full draw a lot longer cuz your arms arent fully extended. especially since you are new to bow hunting and havent developed an anchor point yet, you wont have to alter your form since you are just building one.

also, you can add some length to the overall draw length in the D loop. you might lose a few fps with more string being pulled through the release, but i dont think it will matter that much.

the best advice is go to an archery shop and shoot a bunch of different brands.

i vote for drilling/tapping… put a rail on it and then get a quality sight. no sense in getting one that you can bump around. unless you dont hunt like me and never bump your gun.. =-)

ive used both as well and have had better luck with the special gold… i havent done any testing side by side or anything, but i put my confidence into the special gold all things considered.
