I was up there 2 weeks ago during their warm up for 2 days. The change in the weather did not help the bite the first day which was basically non existent. Second day they seemed to get used to the change and fishing really picked up. Still most of the fish we caught were on almost neutrally weighted bobber rods or tip downs. The fish did not like the rattle reels and I’m assuming it was because of the little bit of extra weight it took to take the bait. You can pick up bait in Bemidji on the way up. Dont waste your time on expensive emerald shiners as the fatheads outfished them 4 to 1. Do to the heavy snow i would not recommend drilling too close to your sleeper shack or you will be surrounded by slush. Travel off the plowed roads is impossible without a snowmobile or track vehicle. Enjoy your trip! URL is choked full of 14″-18″ fish. We ended up with a few over 20 inches that went back too.

    1) Sprint’s unlimited data plans are definitely going to be worth it if you’re frequently on the internet. Two smartphones on Sprints Everything Data Share 1500 plan would come out to $149.99 before taxes, which is the same price as Verizon’s Share Everything plan with 4GB of data shared between two smartphones. The main difference between these two plans would be that on Sprint’s Everything Data Share 1500 plan, you would have 1500 shared minutes between both phones, which will include Any Mobile, Anytime. What that means for you is that any calls you place to any cell phone on any wireless carrier will not use your minutes, and in addition to that, you will have unlimited nights and weekends starting at 7 PM. This will essentially mean that they only time you will use those anytime minutes is when you’re calling a landline phone from the hours of 7 AM to 7 PM from Monday through Friday. With Verizon’s plan, you would have unlimited minutes, however, then you would have to monitor data your data usage between two smartphones

    2) Data is calculated based on how much information is actually downloaded to the phone. All carriers measure data in kilobytes and depending on what you use the internet for will depend on how many kilobytes you use. It is not measured in time increments. Example: viewing email with no attachments 20kb, web page look up 500 kb, streaming music about 60 mb/hr, streaming video about 250 mb/hr. To clarify, downloading information does not mean physically saving pictures or other media to your phone, as this can include anything from loading a webpage, to loading up the news feed on your Facebook app. Calculating that exact amount is a little more difficult, as it can vary depending on the content being downloaded as pictures and other media will generally use up more data. Pulling up a photo album on Facebook, for example, is going to be determined by how you view the photos, with less data being used by viewing the thumbnails of them instead of pulling up the full image. I will include a grid at the end of this e-mail that gives average amounts of data used for commonly performed actions on the web.

    3) There are a number of high end smartphones I would recommend considering. A large part of smartphone choice is something that is based on personal preference. Personally, I own the EVO LTE, and it does a good job fitting all of my needs, however, not everyone may like that device based on few different features of the phone. Some of the high end phones that I would suggest considering would be the Samsung Galaxy S III, the LG Optimus G, the iPhone 5, the Galaxy Note II, the EVO LTE, and the Motorola Photon Q. I would recommend looking at these devices at a Sprint store, as it would give you the opportunity to get some hands on experience with the phones to see which device you would prefer.

    4) The one downside to smartphones is that they are not nearly as durable as the dumb phones. In recent years, the screens have become more durable, but are still more susceptible to getting cracked compared to the dumb phones. If you’re concerned about possibly damaging or breaking the device, I would suggest looking into an Otterbox case for the device, as those cases are very durable and built to try and prevent any damage from being inflicted on your device.

    Sorry about the novel

Just helped a friend repair his older Eskimo this fall. He bought a few iron on patches from Walmart in the crafts department. The patches were about 7×5 inches and came in packs of 2 for about $1.80. There were about a dozen different colors and seemed to be pretty tough material just cut them to size and ironed a patch on each side of the holes. So far they seem to be holding up great and he uses the shack at least twice a week.

Either a bad battery or bad transducer.
Check battery with volt meter, should have 12-13 VDC.

Thanks. Aside from staying away from the crowds, what other tips might you offer? Depth?

I was up there Saturday and went out of rogers. Mainly fished 12- 13 ft range. Great bite but the fish were definitely coming through in schools. We would pick up a few every time they came through. 5/16 slender spoon with whole fat head hooked right behind dorsal fin outfished everything else. Pound it on the bottom a few times then hold it about a foot off the bottom rinse and repeat. Color did not matter

Great info and thank you all. Sounds like the best option is a sleeper house. I checked out some of the layouts online and they look pretty nice! Hopefully you will see a post from me this weekend with my first URL walleyes!

Same thing here for pool 8. The little ice that we make this week will be sunk with all the snow in the forcast. Looks like it might be January before I get on any safe ice around here.

Should tow it fine. I had 2003 with 4.0 v6 and towed my 19 ft bass boat for years. However beware they have weak transmissions and tend to go out. Very expensive fix. Another weak point are the valve springs. Very common to see them break after 100,000 miles. went through both issues and found out the hard way they are very common on that motor and transmission. Do some research online and you will see.

Can’t speak for frabil suit, but I’m on my third season with cabelas guide wear and it performs flawlessly. Spent many a day out in the cold rain thinking it was money well spent.

I’ll bet your reserve tank is low on oil. Remove your motor cowl and fill it back up. That should fix it.

I’m not sure on the exact diameter, but I’ve been using 8lb test Berkley vanish and have been very pleased. I experimented with 10 lb test and it seemed too stiff and not as limber as I wanted for finesse fishing. You also get a lot less drag on those windy days or fishing in the current. If you go with the lighter diameter make sure you have a good drag system.

I’m no professional with either unit, but here are my 2 cents. I have friends who have both units so I got a chance to see them in action. The Lowrance units seemed to have crisper images for the standard sonar. Humminbirds stardard sonar is just fine too, but lowrance seemed to show better target seperation and crisper images. Now with the SI feature Humminbird seemed to have the upper hand. Humminbird just seemed to have a bit clearer image for SI. In the end I decided to go with Humminbird for ease of use. Humminbird menus were a lot more user friendly. Setting way points with one push and shorcut buttons for the different views. They also allowed my to shade different depth ranges on the navigation view. In the end I don’t think you could go wrong with either unit.

I have a buddy with a 2003 nitro 901 and 200hp EFI. His boat is just short of 20 ft. He runs a 25 pitch tempest prop. I know he has tried 1 pitch up and 1 down. This one gave him the best hole shot and didn’t have to sacrifice the top end. Sorry to hear about your friends prop.

I just replaced the water pump on my mercury. I got the replacement kit for around $25 from wholesalemarine.com. The kit comes with a new impeller, gaskets, top and bottom water pump cover, and water tube. I changed out my thermostats and plugs too. If your changing the water pump its a good idea to change the thermostat if your motor has them. My impeller still looked in ok shape, but with the change the pressure gauge shows almost double the water pressure.

I have it and it works great. Keep in mind it works off a cellular signal so make sure you have good Sprint signal inside where you intend to use it. I have a cell phone through Sprint with great reception in my house so it was a no brainer to switch. 19.99 a month unlimited nation wide calling!

If its only $20 for a season pass like I heard it shouldn’t be too bad for the pocket book. I’m willing to pay a few dollars to keep our landings nice. If you’re like me you’ll get you’re monies worth.

Not trying to stir the but with this question. Just trying to get the facts correct. Is the money, generated from this fee, guaranteed to go towards the maintenance of the landings? I agree that $20.00 not too much to ask.

    FDR

I would hope that’s what its used for, but I guess I shouldn’t assume either.

I was out on the lake with the atv 2 weeks ago and there was about 8 to 10 inches in most areas. I did how ever come across a hand full of spots with only 5 to 6 inches. I’m not sure if it made much ice after that but hearing about guys driving trucks out there I figured someone would go through. I think this will be the first year I haven’t driven my truck on lake onalaska.

I was fishing mn side of the river a couple years ago and had 3 tip ups out. Warden showed up and gave me an ear full about having one too many lines out. He said even with a Wisconsin license I was on the mn side of the river and had to follow mn rules.

Walleye bite is in full swing. They have been moving into the back waters slowly. I’ve been concentrating on slack water close to current. Dragging live bait ever so slowly has been the ticket. Took home six nice eaters yesterday in about 45 mins. I went out in the rain today and had a blast caught and released 4 all over 25 inches. Smallies are going strong too. Just look for typical smallmouth water. Rocky bottom and points. Most of the ones I’ve caught are already spawned out. Cover a lot of water and use a search bait like a rattle trap. Once you find them there should be more then switch to a tube.

I run 2 transducers on the back of my boat hooked together with a “Y” cable. This enables me to run at up to 10mph with the side imaging and once I get up on plain my other transducer picks up because I have the side imaging ducer mounted about 8 inches up from the bottom of the boat and the other ducer mounted where it should be. That way if something comes in contact with the bottom of the boat it will only flip the skimmer ducer up and the side imaging ducer remains safe up high on the transom. I will try to take a picture of my set up tomorrow and post it to better explain.

Pictures would be great! Thanks for all the great info guys.
