I was up there last Saturday, fished the north end with everyone else. I did venture a little further south than most, just off the main creek channel. I was in 28 feet of water and only about 3″ of ice. We got quite a few crappies that were suspended between 4 and 8 feet off the bottom. Used a jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head. Also got lucky enough to get a muskie around noon. It went 10 lbs. very healthy fish. It showed up 15 foot down and took a lot of time to get in with 2 pound test. No blue gills, but saw a few on the ice closer to the boat ramp. You definitely need a flasher to mark the fish. My dad got a few crappies hugging the bottom, but most were suspended. We had better luck between 10 and 2 compared to dusk and dawn. Good luck if you get out.
September 6, 2007 at 11:53 am #606050I was just up there in June. Had good luck with numbers but not size. Stayed on the northeast corner. Where are you going to be? We had great luck on the X-Raps #10 and 12. Smallies on tubes and grubs, some on husky jerks and the x-raps. Average size smallies were 3 1/2 lbs. We had one over 5# and three right at it. A lot of muskies seen, but it was the week before opener. Colors that are good for muskie are the ORANGE with white or black. Let me know where you are staying and I’ll try to give you some better details.
August 12, 2007 at 11:59 pm #599279Hey guys, what was the water temp? Looking to visit my folks next weekend and maybe hit the lake. How’s the cranks working? Pleasure boaters still messing things up? Thanks in advance for any info.
May 9, 2005 at 4:33 pm #362001John, sounds like a GREAT day to me!!! Congrats! What were you having luck with? Live bait? Depth?
Thanks. Clay
May 5, 2005 at 12:05 pm #361329I am just waiting for the CUBS to come to town. Anyone coming down please let me know so we can get together. Always welcome.
Buddy of mine said the walleyes were hit and miss, but when you get them they are worth the wait. 22-25″. Todd, ready for me to come back and guide for you again? LOL. Keep the reports coming. THANKS!

May 2, 2005 at 2:20 pm #360659Ran up to 3 mile on Saturday. Crappies were non stop. 18-25 feet of water by the brush piles. 80% were 9 inch plus. Did manage a few 12 1/2’s and a dozen over 10 1/2. Couple gills and 1 nice perch. Tried for eye’s just before dark, but no luck. Water temp 53 degrees.

April 28, 2005 at 9:32 pm #360100Gills, the lake is always open 24-7. Just be careful of the trees at night. Good Luck.

April 18, 2005 at 6:47 pm #357757I agree, it’s way too warm. As for the wind, there has been plenty of that down here. Sounds like Clear Lake is back, after a couple year lull.

April 18, 2005 at 4:23 pm #357720Hey John, any musky? I heard they have been catching a lot of 12-14 inch walleyes. Has the cycle come around again? Buddy called Sunday and said he fished Brushy Friday night and Sat. with no luck on eye’s. When are you guys heading back over there?

November 30, 2004 at 5:10 pm #329651Around Ames for another week or two, then I’m going to raise the IQ of Missouri.
October 13, 2004 at 5:36 pm #324155John, I was up Sunday mid day. Wind from the East-Southeast was terrible for fishing and boat control was not the easiest. Did get a few yellows on the North side by the pump house. No walleyes!!! Slip bobber with a minnow took a few and jig and minnow the others. Wasn’t fast and furious, but I think the wind and temp change had a lot to do with it.
Good Luck! Clay
September 15, 2004 at 4:21 pm #321258Thanks John for the info. Maybe someone else reading this might contact you for some more info. Sounds like a lot of fun.
Thanks again. Clay
September 15, 2004 at 1:17 pm #321200Congrats on your winning fish. How did the tourny go? Are you guys getting back up to Clear Lake or Brushy again this year? Hopefully this fall will be a lot better than the first part of this year.

September 1, 2004 at 1:14 pm #319705Thanks John and Joe. Don’t think I’ll fight all the boat traffic for this Labor Day weekend, but may try the next weekend.

August 30, 2004 at 6:03 pm #319422John, anything on the yellows? I’m just waiting for the jet skiis to get off there. Northwest corner still active? Thanks. Clay
July 12, 2004 at 5:47 pm #312257Hey Todd,
I was up there Sat. morning (4:30). Trolled the dam for an hour with no luck, so I headed up toward the north end. From 7-8 we caught 6 walleyes and lost 3 more on the way to the boat. Also had 2 follows right next to the boat. All were 20-22″. Then like a light switch, they stopped biting. Tried leeches on a slip bobber with various depths, with NO luck. Everything was on cranks.June 29, 2004 at 5:38 pm #310500John, sounds like early until about 11:00 then all heck breaks loose. Don’t know about the 4th weekend though, could be nasty. As far a Blue Pit, I thought they only had trout in it. It does have a boat ramp, but never heard of any big boats being on it. There are a few other pits around it that suppose to have panfish in them.
I would look into trying up north of Clear on Silver or Rice. Probably a lot less traffic. Good Luck!!! ClayJune 28, 2004 at 6:13 pm #310324Jake, I went back up on Sat. afternoon for 3 hours with my 12 year old. We boated 10 gills, 1 perch and 3 bass. Everyone I talked to said the same. SLOW! Of course I was there right in the middle of the day. Always have better luck toward dark. Still have yet to hear of any crappies on a consistant basis. Good Luck if you come back over. Clay
June 28, 2004 at 2:14 pm #310275WAY TO GO!!!! Awesome job DAD. Did you keep her or let her go?

June 21, 2004 at 5:21 pm #309457Jake, I swung up on Sat. night. Got up there at 7:30 and fished until 9:30. Caught 2 walleyes. 1-18″ and 1-24″. Trolling cranks on the outside of the trees. Haven’t heard on the crappies.
Duncombe is the closest baitshop. It is 1/2 mile north of Hwy 20 where you turn to go south to the lake. It is a gas and grocery with bait. Good Luck.Clay
June 8, 2004 at 4:41 pm #307892I too have fell victim to this purchase. I do have good results though. Fish them for smallies on the river with good to very good productivity. I never seem to get the HOG of the hole with them, but do get plenty of the mid-size.

May 24, 2004 at 4:00 pm #305883Todd, sounds and looks like you had a great time! I am planning on going up either Friday night or Sat. night. Heard anything on the crappies? Any size to the gills?

May 17, 2004 at 4:13 pm #305058Sounds like you had a great time. Pretty much the same story on the other local lakes. Just about ready to pop. I went over to Don Williams Lake just north of Ogden. Caught a few by submerged trees close to shore, but the better bet was slow drifting over 15-17 feet of water and catching them between 8-11 feet. No real size. 9-10 1/2″. Another buddy was over at Hickory Grove and said he also had good luck drifting. He did catch a few big gills close to shore with a piece of crawler.
