Snags will happen lost a lot of lures until I started using Fire line. Cut my losses by 99%.
January 15, 2006 at 6:13 pm #412016Eat the small ones, thats why I keep the small saugers and cut out the belly meat. Give me $200K and I’ll write a paper on why it is safe to eat fish out of the river.
A couple of years ago some neighbors were laughing at me for eating the fish out of the river. One of the wives was telling me should would only eat Canadain walleye. She even mention that she had it the night before for dinner. I chuckled and asked her if she would eat fish out of Lake Erie. She then told me how polluted Lake Erie was and no one should consume fish from that lkae. I then told her that the walleye she had that evening likely was from Erie because 80% of the walleyes sold for resturant and Grocery consumption comes from Lake Erie. She got real quiet after that.
Go ahead and eat the fish, throw the big ones back and don’t worry about it.November 12, 2005 at 2:15 pm #396213I guess this isn’t an eel Pout. This fish almost looks like a salamander.
November 12, 2005 at 3:50 am #390225Have to give thanks to all the vets, but give a big one to all the WW 2 vets, you are this countrys greatest generation, God Bless you all.
For all the rest of you a great book of WW 2 to read
” All American, All the Way the story of the 82ND airborne in WW 2. Best WW 2 book I read And I have read quite a few.November 8, 2005 at 1:21 pm #395012HAd the same thing happen the good part was it was a brand new shad rap so it didn’t hurt when I had my 83 year father pull it out. That was the scary part having him remove it. Still remember when i was 10 and left a rapala tangled in the anchor line. He decided to anchor and was letting the rope go through his hand you can imagine a 3 hook rapala going through your whole hand. Ouch !!!only time I saw tears coming to my dads eyes due to an injury.

May 29, 2005 at 1:50 pm #365329Tuesday Sunny and the lake was like glass pulled cranks got 16 walleyes 6 keepers, Friday cloudy overcast chop on the lake and gloomy, thought I would kill them 6 total 2 keepers, fishing head of the lake.
November 10, 2004 at 1:46 pm #327108Great Photos, Notice quite a bit of blood on the filets. Next time as you head into the resort/marina, slit the neck of each fish. When the fish are cleaned there is no blood at all. Quick spray of the board with a hose and the board is clean, no blood at all.
October 28, 2004 at 11:42 am #325767As I tell my 5 children, you could be living in Afghanastan. Put life in prespective, as a resident of the USA we probably have it better than 95% of the people in the world. I believe most of the world would trade my problems for thiers. By the way I just had to buy a new motor cause mine is blown to the tune of $8K. This is after I had $70K in flood damage a few years ago. As my neighbor said if you didn’t have bad luck you would have no luck. Want to have some luck try Everets resort in Red Wing and hook up with one of the guides out of there. I’ll guarantee they’ll set you inthe right direction.

October 6, 2004 at 1:52 am #323344Well I’m Chacago and fished the pool the last 2 days and the only thing I caught were sturgeon. But the weather sure was nice!!!!!!
September 18, 2004 at 9:18 pm #321690Fished Friday with not much luck. Caught 4 sheepies, 2 small sturgeons and lost about a 20-30 pound sturgeon. Had a couple of bites that seemed like walleyes/Saugers. More of an experiment trip for me, had my 2 year out on the boat to get him use to the area.
June 3, 2004 at 3:01 am #307214HAd the same problem, check mine out with a volt meter one was reading 12 volt the other zero, looks like I need a new battery
May 22, 2004 at 11:25 pm #305749James, Tried the river last wednesday, had a lot of action catching sheepheads but no walleyes. Trolled the Wisc side from bay city to maiden rock pulling #5 shads sppeds 2-2.5 8-15 depth zig zag pattern. Any hints on what I did wrong? Going with Dustin tomorrow Hopefully the rain holds off
January 13, 2004 at 10:16 pm #288509Had the same problem a few years ago. A couple of boats were pulling 3 ways near the dam and had been for about 2 hours. All boats coming in saw what we were doing and respected the zone we were using. About 10 a boat from a state south of Minnesota comes in and plops his anchor right in the middle of where we were fishing. To make matters worse he starts casting toward the shoreline and was using kite string as an anchor rope. You almost feel like doing something that would get you sent to the big house. But as I tell my kids, deal with the situation and move on they’ll get their dues. On the flip side I have seen people move near me when I’m not catching a thing and use a diiferent technique and start catching fish. With a little input from them I tried their techniques and started catching fish. 95% of the fishermen on the river are great people it is the 5% out there that gives a lot of people a bad name.
June 15, 2003 at 2:28 am #268603Please ignore this post my friend is going to be fishing pool 9, any help for pool 9 would be appreciated. Chacago.
May 22, 2003 at 10:11 pm #267221Coming from Wisconsin, stop in at Everts for your launch, talk to steve and see where the fish are biting. A wise investment is to use a guide, there are plenty of excellent ones that you will find by watching their posts. I have taken 3 trips with Dustin the last 3 years, Summer, spring and late spring and have learned different aspects of fishing the river each time. Next year it will be late fall, also buy the video at Everts for using plastics on the river. Like one of the other poster said once you use this site it does get addictive. But the using of a guide sure has help me out and made my fishing experience of my own much better. We pay maoney to fix cars, educate our children at colleges, sports, dance, gymnastics……, spend a little on your self and have some fun and learn. If you have to take the wife, child or girl friend and let them experinece the river.
April 16, 2003 at 2:39 am #264259trolled3 ways Fri and Monday near the dam. Tried all different color Raps with little luck. Anchored with a 3 way and a minnow caught lots but all small, good luck.
December 31, 2002 at 9:41 pm #249706If you want to have real fun take your kids for a guided trip in the fall with one of the river guides. I have gone with Dustin and talk a few times with Jim, but any of the guides who provide time on FTR would be good to go with. Best web site around, keep reading, learn the techniques and good luck, and remember the life vests for the little ones. If you can’t afford the guide try Everts dock I think you would do real good there.
December 31, 2002 at 8:47 pm #249703Try the black dog plant near Burnsville, talk to Rippin Pigs he seems to fish there alot. Try Everts on the Missisippi near Red Wing, Steve will set you straight, I have seen quite a few fish caught on the docks there. Please use caution with young children make sure they have life vests on the current is fast.
November 19, 2002 at 6:03 pm #248223Call Everts talk to Steve he will steer u in the right direction, traffic wasn’t bad last Wednesday and Thursday.
