ice was in my bay, out of my bay, and back in the bay this morning. hopefully we don’t get any heavy winds, it would be bad for the wrong side of the lake…

Having drove past it today… I’m going to say April 4th. It’s pulled away from shore and awfully dark!

So much for the 2021 year class fish if ice out is early!!

I’ve never heard the correlation between early Ice out and poor walleye year classes, can you expand why this is?

    “Camera and graph.
Only activity was a small group of 5 inch perch the entire time.

Not a single fish Wednesday-Friday. No marks.”

personally, i have a hard time sitting around on Mille Lacs for over and hour without a mark… 3 days? Ouch flame

I think there was a huge tullibee spawn but an even huge-er perch spawn. I have marked more <strong class=”ido-tag-strong”>perch (forage size) out there and have caught more fish out there that have been puking up <em class=”ido-tag-em”>perch than I ever have. The handful of walleyes I have seen this winter have been extremely well fed too.

Simply put, I just do not think they are as hungry as they have been for the last 1-5 seasons.

This is what I have been hearing & seeing this season. It started as early as August. Friday we did ok, but by Saturday morning it had shut off. I talked to a lot of guys all over the lake this weekend it it seemed dismal.. The only fish we caught Saturday was a 5″ perch.

Yep, this describes what I’m seeing compared to the last 3 years

Randy, maybe a dumb question, however, what is a jig fly combo? A three-way with a jig on the bottom and a some type of fly on top?

However, I’m also getting the sentiment he’s replacing some other’s as far as figuratively standing on the street corner shouting in a cone.

Yep, and no one in the DNR is listening… or should say, no one in the DNR cares

spoke with someone fishing around the island last weekend who stated they lost quite a few lures on it. they also said its a known about by other muskie anglers. not trying to bait anyone, just wondering if anyone else has heard anything? Sounds like a one off if no one else has heard anything

caught fish during the day on chubs, could not buy a bite trolling at night. i will say trolling Saturday night was interesting with the wind. west side tight to shore was fish able, now when tried a bigger point with some exposure, i was drifting at 3+mph and waves were crashing over the back of the boat… that lasted about 5 min before i went in.

ill take it as a win, hopefully they can get someone to negotiate a little better and keep it at one fish for the open water season too. however, since the MN DNR has zero education in sales and no experience, i see them loosing the negotiation for the 10th or however many years they have lost in a row.

on the other hand, the angler survey, catch rates, and hook mortality are a complete joke. Having a handfull of college students at a few accesses around a lake the size of Mille lacs, asking people how many fish they caught, is pull numbers out of air.

As a former surveryor, you can go kick rocks. I did my job every single day I was scheduled to when I was a surveyor. I did it accurately and I reported it accurately in a timely manner. If you think the system is a failure then lobby the legislature or DNR on how to change it but to verbally bash the peons at the bottom of the totem pole who are doing what they are asked to is low and disrespectful.

LOL, Gimruis, as others have aluded too, this was not a knock on the creel workers, the world needs more college educated hard working people like yourself. Im sure you kicked ass and took names while working for the MNDNR, and i am greatful for your service, sorry for any misunderstanding.

My point is that the MNDNR or whoever is behind the curtain doing the statistical anylisis for “total kill”, can not possibly belive they are anywhere close to acurate. Unfortunetly it is the honor system which obveously has flaws, considering anyone can tell them whatever they want. Mind you, the creel team is probably at only a handful accesses around the lake, and that might be overestimating. I really only see them at the Garrison access, and i never see them on the north shore accesses when driving around the lake. With that said, how can they possibly know or even say how many people are on the lake at one time to get a “catch rate” or “total kill” for the day.

Its a joke, and someone needs to hold the MNDNR or whoever is comming up with this imaganary number accountable. Yes it is an IMAGINARY number, no one is keeping any fish with the exception of a few lawless individuals… i wonder if they count the illegally harvested fish? correct me if im wrong, Mille Lacs has to be the only lake around that will shut a lake off over an imaganry number.

done, off my soap box, and Gimruis hopefully you will except my appology.

Ill give the fall assesment a 3 due to all the years of data they have to compair with.

on the other hand, the angler survey, catch rates, and hook mortality are a complete joke. Having a handfull of college students at a few accesses around a lake the size of Mille lacs, asking people how many fish they caught, is pull numbers out of air. Think of all the tire pumpers trying to act cool over with the creel associates and over inflating there catch… i still dont understand how they can justify they are even close. there are literally thousands of accesses around the lake if you include privet ones, they dont have a clue whats going on.

How did everyone do? We caught 4 from dark to 9:30 all before moon came up. Caught 9 (8 eyes and 1 smallie) on minnows from 2-dark. All perfect eaters (on normal lakes) with biggest being 21. Bright orange chrome HJ or silver flicker shad. Had a lot of short bites trolling but when I would slow down (normally running 1.4-1.6) we would get nothing. Did catch one realing in the line to change out lures, when I looked down I was 14′ behind the boat.

Beautiful day as outside of a few drops the rain went around us. Was nice to be out again.

I didnt make it up due to prior obligations, however, i did hear reports from guides that it was abnormally slow. that being said, someone always seems to find a way to crush them when other cant.
