The Avid series is probably for the money, the best value.
That being said, there is a serious difference between an Avid and an Extreme or Elite. There is a big difference between the Legend Tournament and the Elite and Extreme. The Elite and Extreme are basically the same blanks. I have built numerous rods using the 7’6″ MLXF SCV blanks (Elite) and they are much more sensitive than the SCIV (Tournament) blanks. If the money is not the issue, try the Legend. The big difference in the Legend X, Elite and Extreme is the handle.
Heck, you deserve it.January 11, 2019 at 9:13 am #1825221To change which screen is active just hit menu once and the top should be left or right and an arrow. That is where you change active screen left/right.
January 11, 2019 at 7:49 am #1825186I use it with a black background, night mode and backlight down. Not having any battery issue. Not going lithium till I am sure it is going to be my main unit.
When you set depth are you talking about the max depth setting or lower limit?
I have been using it with split screen too. I am not crazy about the signal picture and it isn’t very sharp separation.Have you ever tried using it in open water mode?
Is there a way to sharpen the readings?
Sometimes the +/- buttons control zoom, sometimes it controls gain, is there a way to set it one way or another?
Might get it out this afternoon.
Thanks
November 30, 2018 at 7:55 pm #1813971Gray .5 inch pvc.
Still need to clean up the edges.
Not crazy about the handle part of it.
The stuff is a pain to cut with the hole saw.
I think I need to turn the speed up.
November 30, 2018 at 5:04 pm #1813928Here is mine, still have some fine tuning to do. It fits in a five gallon pail. Need to add transducer cup, hooks to wrap transducer cable, trim power cord and add second Ram ball for my iPad for my Pancam. Not sure it was worth it. Someone had a soft pack on line for sale for $90 bucks. Oh well, I do have enough material to make a couple more. It is made from PVC plastic, so it will never rot.

October 26, 2018 at 9:33 am #1805965That is why I went with ram mount. Storing the transducer under the unit and I think I will use a pail of screw in tools bent 90 degrees on the side of the handle.
October 26, 2018 at 8:32 am #1805937I would say overkill could describe mine. Will post pictures when done. My cost includes everything, ducer, ram, battery, gimbal, cord. Ordered everything yesterday. Will take up to 2 weeks to get everything. Went with cheapest supplier and no shipping.
October 26, 2018 at 8:02 am #1805922Going with regular battery. Figured out getting it all in 5 gallon pail I hope.
Just a word on making your own shuttle vs buying Humminbird ice shuttle. My home made Cost $215 with ram mount and pvc.
Didn’t save much. but, like fishing with stuff i make for my purposes.
October 26, 2018 at 7:59 am #1805917Lunker,
What about running with the black screen background instead of or with turning down the backlight? Can we shut off the GPS on the Helix?
I have another unit mounted on my ATC for GPS or phone when I need to pinpoint when on foot.
October 24, 2018 at 5:45 pm #1805622$50 for piece of pvc plastic for the one I am building. It will be weather/ice proof.
October 18, 2018 at 7:52 am #1804485There is nothing lighter and more sensitive than the carbon fiber handles that I use.
A lot of guys like noodle rods. A lot aren’t really fish with a “true noodle” rod. A noodle rod is a slow action rod that basically bends evenly from butt to tip. That is a noodle rod. A lot of rods being called noodles are actually rods that are fast or extra fast with a very light tip and the manufacturer calls it a noodle. That is not a noodle. This blank I have from Basskhang is a noodle. He has one that is carbon that is a very interesting blank. But, the butt end is very small(3.5 mm approx) and to make a carbon fiber handle that fits it tightly would be very tough. I don’t have the equipment in my shop to make that one.October 17, 2018 at 6:20 pm #1804423I tried that one too. It was ok. It was heavy compared to other comparable blanks. The blank is 6.5 mm at the butt. In my opinion it is over kill. You can’t beat his prices.
October 17, 2018 at 6:18 pm #1804422I like the feel, power and sensitivity of a quicker rod. Noodles don’t have any power. This is the finesse noodle.
October 15, 2018 at 6:32 pm #1803930Check out the Shappell FX150. Lots of room, light and solid sled. Price is right too.
August 23, 2018 at 7:51 am #1793249The wrap for the hook keeper and guides match the color of the blank except the top 4 wraps. I used a neon yellow tiger strip to highlight the tip to watch the tip. I actually had a different set of guides it but, did not like how it performed. The guides were ceramic and a different “guide train” that was kind of old school. I did it the second time with these guides and it has been a great performing rod. I use it a ton with 1/8 oz.-1/4 oz. jigs, shiver minnows and even small cranks.
I now build all my rods handles using carbon fiber. CF is so much lighter and more sensitive than anything out there.
This is my last cork handle.
I will get another picture for the length of rod.Attachments:
July 30, 2018 at 4:52 pm #1788404I don’t like the seating choice that they use in the lodge. The bench is heavy and I didn’t like the bucket seat set-up. You used to be able to buy everything separate to set-up the way you want. Is that possible anymore? Sure like the side doors.
