Kris, Nice mounts. Would you take on a dead mount of three pheasants hanging together? If so, at what price?

It was actually an early Christmas present for my 14 year old son. I am sure he will have it out this weekend.

All, thanks for the input. FYI, I ended up getting a used Remmington .243 model 700 with a Simmons 2.5-10×50 scope for $350. Good shape, pretty good deal.

Would a .300 Savage be overkill for this? How do you think it would work as a a predator rifle?

My Springer chased up four pheasants last night in Frontenac State Park. Seeing lots of birds around. Should be a good year.

Blackduck, I don’t think that there is another drawing for the surplus tags. I believe the go on sale on a particular day set by the DNR. I do remember a secondary selection on the original entry form for the lottery, but do not think that this had anything to do with the surplus tags. Does anyone else know? Also, according to your logic above, if you are going to join a group, to get the best odds, do not include someone who was selected in the lottery the previous year, correct? Else, you hurt your chances of the group getting selected? Can anyone else confirm or clear this up?

Do you have a better getting selected in the lottery if you are in a group or single? What have people experienced?

I use Iams, and keep a small dog dish full. Typically have to refill it each morning around 7 AM and again around 6 PM. If the dish is empty during mid-day however, I will fill it up. I do pay attention to when my Springer eats. Usually a dish full in the morning, half a dish around early afternoon, and then a dish in the evening. Her water dish is kept continually full. She gets a lot of exercise, and is in great shape.
