Well, finally got the pier put in on Saturday, cleaned up around the house and my dad and I were on the water around 3:30pm. We launched from Sauk and decided to make the run down by Tipperary after launching. Fished for about 2 hours in the wind with only 2 short saugers. It was pretty tough with the waves/wind to stay vertical. Only about 6 boats when we showed up and 5 of them left within 20 minutes. I saw water temp from 36-38 degrees. Didn’t fish Sunday on the lake but went below the dam. Nothing in 3 hours but cold, wet and numb hands.
Here is a picture from today from the deck. She has opened up quite a bit. Sunset and Moon Valley are still locked up. Saw another boat go up towards the trestle today. I would think the ferry will open up in the next few weeks depending on weather.
I personally liked the “fisherman-as-philosopher” narrative. I can see how it could be annoying, but as someone who knows how hard it is to explain a silly passion like fishing, I think this video nailed it. Shows the excitement and heart breaks. (Even though my main babe is the walleye, I have been slowly becoming properly equipped to chase some Muskys.)Really got me pumped for open water. Enjoyed it!
Maybe one of the crappie bait caster style reels? I don’t know much about them but maybe they make a smaller ice version size? Let it free spool and when the rod goes down click it
Over and set the hook. But then again, I’ve never used tip downs so I don’t know if this has already been tried.
Was out all weekend but wasn’t so angry at the fish. Needed to do some relaxing so did some tip up fishing with a buddy and my cousin. It was slowwww. We had only 3 keepers all weekend with a few shorts mixed in. Lost 2 fish that felt heavier then normal, and performered the slow t-bar roll. You know that feeling when walking up to it. Excitement got the best of us and pulled the trigger to soon which left us wondering what it could’ve been. Best part of the weekend was the DNR was out checking licenses and snowmobile enforcement. About 10:00pm saturday night, enjoying a beer from the house , I watched a group of snowmobiles leaving sunset. Noticed a sled pull up along the trailing guy of the group And all of a sudden red and blues. With the radar runs out of lakeside, I can only imagine how busy they were that nighy. Just glad to see them out and just might be seeing them a little more often this year.(in a good way of course)
***drilled a hole where some truck tracks were and found 10″ of ice. I also found up to 26″ of ice in some spots. Lots of current under the ice out there. Please use caution when driving out.
@breezy,
I know how weird goalies can be. Im almost 34 and still play 3 nights a week. There are actually a bunch of wash-up goalies on the site.
DT
Haha! Good to know. I stopped playing beer league a few years ago. It seemed like everyone all of a sudden was playing for lord Stanley, and just a bunch of goons. Ain’t worth getting hurt again over it. Pond hockey for now. although that Labatt blue pond hockey tournament looks like it’d be a good time. Always fills up fast though.
Losing a long term girlfriend twice over the chance at a fish of a lifetime. When will they understand? There’s many more fish in the sea right?
I see a little Dominic Hasek in him. Coming from someone who played goalie AAA till I was 18 and could have played jrs/college. Make sure he’s having fun. don’t let the pressure or a loss get to him(I mean we are the last defense.) and more importantly, remind him to have fun. oh and another thing. We’re goalies. We’re weird. Deal with it. HA!
Well after Friday’s rod box test I thought I was all done with bad things for a while. Well then Sunday after coming off the ice for the day. I found my rod box had fell out of my shack somehow while in tow. We searched the lake and asked anyone we saw but know one had seen it.
Well for me this was the second time I have lost a rod box full of rods and it felt really bad after such a bad week. I however this time had a business card in the box this time so I had a flicker of hope that it would return. After a near sleepless night, this morning at work I got a call from a fellow angler who had found it. This gentleman was so nice he swung it by my work for me. I couldn’t get him to take anothing for a reward, and I could not thank him enough. Finally things are looking up!
When all things go to hell, it’s the last thing you need when the smallest things hold you back from your one thing of separation from the world. Truck can be replaced. Rods can be replaced. Glad you have another chance at a trophy fish of a life time. I’ve rolled a box truck
at 70mph and am lucky to still be searching for miss 30″+ walleye. Glad you got your Rods back and your healthy. Karma will reward that guy that did the right thing. It could always be worse. #nottobethatguy
A buddy and I fished Saturday with high hopes of fish still being in the area. Fishing pressure has started to increase, that’s for sure. From 1-3:30 we landed 7 keepers, with about 5-6 shorts mixed in. Lost two bigger walleyes right at the hole. His came unhooked and looked to be a low 20’s fish and mine was a bite of right as she took a second run after getting to the hole. She had a big head and a fat body, definitely was a heart breaker. Fished Sunday by myself and decided to check out some new spots. Wasn’t really expecting much, but did manage to catch a coupe small crappie and a few short sauger. Quite a few trucks out there, even heard of one out in the channel by the stumps. Stay safe people, even though it’s been cold, there is a river flowing through there.
Maybe you were on his spot and he was just waiting for you to leave????
Probably the case. Wish he would’ve came out sooner, fishing was good.
Just was a surprise to have someone come out of no where. Maybe it was castle-rock-clown sitting in that van down by the river. Thought it looked a little suspicious…. any-who, back to the maps. Need something to do at work.
It was the just first time fishing it after doing some homework and a lot of trial and errors. I guess its back to the drawing board. But but but… oh well.
2 man limit. Less then 3 hours tonight. Lost another nice eye right at the hole on a tip up. Same place as yesterday just a few different tweaks. Until next weekend….
Tried a new spot last night and it paid off. Lost a couple fish due to poor hook sets. This walleye hit the bait twice and on the third time I finally got hooks into her about 7′ from the bottom. Right around 21″ and was the last fish of the night. They seemed pretty hungry last night. 16′ fow with some quick drops and humps. Marked fish every ten minutes or so and they usually would commit right when they would show up. Heading back out today to see if they’re still there.

Lake mille lace is living proof that slot limits don’t work. There are plenty of other lakes that slots have failed on also.
On the flip side of that, Lake Wisconsin is living proof that they do work. They may not work on every body of water, but in the right situations, they take average walleye lakes and turn them into really good ones. I don’t think you can make a general statement that slot limits do or don’t work. It is very dependent on the body of water and how they are implemented.

X3!
2014 without split back seat doesn’t fold down flat or I’d be using my dad’s flip-over instead of a sled. I’ll likely be figuring out a way to haul it on the canoe roof-top crossbars I’ll be buying soon. Then we can get on the iPhone and use FaceTime so there’s always have a real-time fishing buddy when I close the lid. You’ll have to PM for my number.
No face time for this guy. Just got the iPhone 6 and have been having nightmares of it spinning out of control down the hole. Even released a 15″ crappie with out a pic because of the fear of dropping it down the hole. Also just learned the hard way Eskimos quick flip 1 isn’t 32″ wide. More like 33″. Oh well got to drive 150 miles round trip for nothing. Dreams are crushed right now. As for as a limit. I can’t control the weather. I Fish whenever I can. Just a fishin bum I guess
I bit the bullet on portables when I sold my SUV to save commuting expenses with a new Focus. I can fit a small Otter sled and all my gear but not even the smallest flip-over and keep my sled weight well under 40 lbs. My dad has a one man flip-over and doesn’t use it because it shuts out his buddies. I’m like him, fishing is always so much more fun when shared with the right people. I already get too much isolation in my windowless office.
Frabill recon fits perfectly in the back of my focus with the seat down.

Just for reference, I had an 80lb Terrova mounted to my 18′ Lund Pro V for ten years and never had an issue with it having enough power.I believe I have a Terrova sitting in my garage that is not being used. Was planning on selling it anyway but need to look it over and make sure everything works. For sure, I have a brand new foot pedal that goes with it.
FYI for anyone else that see’s this:
The Terrova that I had on my Lund Pro V stayed with the lund when I sold it. The spare/extra Minn Kota motor I have in my garage is a 70# Power Drive that appears to be in good condition but I do not have the proper female outlet on any of my boats to test it out. I have two food pedals to go with this 70# Power Drive, (one brand new foot pedal still in its original package).Anyone in southern Wisconsin area running a Power Drive? Care let me test my PD out on your boat?
PM me! Might be able to help ya out.
Fished Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Saturday, a buddy came up and we caught 7 keeper saugers and many shorts. He definitely had the right bait as he out fished me 4-1. After shoveling myself out for a couple hours Sunday Morning, the plows finally came through and plowed our street. Decided to fish the storm. Didn’t bring the tip ups and hiked it out to where I was the day before. After setting up and getting the heater going, it was game on. Caught just about everything including a couple keeper walleye and some nice crappies. At about 4pm, my flasher was lit up and I couldn’t get my bait down there fast enough. Ran out of propane and called it a night about 5pm. Monday Morning, I ended up with one 18″ sauger and 1 11″ crappie. They seem pretty tight lipped. The snow made walking miserable as there were a lot of drifts.
Fished Saturday and Sunday. Saturday had high hopes with the front coming through and wasn’t let down. As the sun started to set, flags started to fly until about 6:30 then it died off. Sunday was a little bit slower, but started marking fish. Couldn’t get them to commit so I changed up to some different size baits and that was the ticket. Got into a couple decent schools of crappies/yellow bass. Had to leave at 11. As soon as I was packed up and leaving, a guy on a ATV moved right to where I was fishing. Came back out around 1 and fished till 6pm. Only action was from 4-4:30pm and it was quick. 1 keeper and 2 shorts. Thanks to Jeff for cutting the hooks on my jigging rap.
Been fishing every weekend since safe ice. Did good for early ice pike with a handful around 33-36″. Right around the first week in December I started chasing crappies/walleyes/saugers out on different bays and parts of the lake. Crappies would be biting really good one day, the next day would be completely different. But to me, it seems the bite has really tapered off since the beginning of January. Been drilling a lot of holes every time out until I mark fish. Have only had 1 skunk so far of not catching a legal walleye/sauger. All my fish have been saugers so far.
