I am looking at a size 10. After some research, would a breathable pair work if I wear some long underwear/thick socks? I would fish for about 2 hours at a time in the spring, but come summer, I will fish a trout stream occassionally for 4-6 hours at a time. I am looking at Hodgman Men’s Pipestone($115). Any opinions/suggestions with that info?

I am looking in the range of $1000 to $5000. Under $2500 if purchased this year, or about $5000 if I wait until next year. I saw tri-hull boats were lower in price and that is why I considered that style, but your advice has me thinking I should steer away from them. I live in Maple Grove, so I will be fishing area lakes, as well as lakes from 50 acres small to Mille Lacs or Red Lake occassionally. I do a lot of anchor or drift fishing for bass, pike, crappie and walleye. I have done some trolling in the past and I think I would definitely like to do a lot more of that style fishing. I do not require a large or fast motor – large enough to get around quick, but I am not a speed demon. I am considering a boat with console steering and windhsield – something I could maybe put a cover over to fish in the rain. As far as other passengers, it would be myself and maybe 1 to 2 people.

I think that is about all I am hoping to find. I have looked at Alumacraft Trophys and they look like the style I might want. In my price range, this would be an older boat that could probably use some cosmetic work and/or new flooring. I am ok with that if it fits my needs/budget.

When I was in high school, years ago, 2 of my friends and I would fish right below the dam – before the fences went up. We would catch smallmouth, carp and the occassional sturgeon. The current is so strong there that the sturgeon would hit the current and our drag would scream as we ran with the fish trying to keep up, praying we could bring it to shore. Needless to say, we only landed 1 that was about 42 to 48 inches – and that 1 flopped back in the water after only maybe 10 seconds – and the rest simply snapped our 12 lb mono line. It was a lot of fun. I probably owe my dad $80 in lures and jigs that I “borrowed” that are somewhere in the St. Croix now. By the way, here is a pic of a nice carp my dad caught a few years ago fishing downstream from the dam using oatmeal balls.

I use the Ice-55 and have used that next to both Marcum and Vexilar flashers. There has been very little to almost interference issues when using next to both Vex and Marcum. The Ice-55 did not pick up much interference nor cause much interference on the other models – Marcum LX-5 and Vexilar 18. Also, I have been very happy with my Humminbird and would make the same purchase if I had to do all over again, but the other units I use it next to are also great units.

Sounds like a fair enough way to make sure people are following the law…

I have been using these for both summer and ice fishing with great success. I also use the Gulp minnow head. If the Gulp minnow head doesn’t do the trick, I switch to the 1″ minnow. I usually have more success with these than live minnows for crappie and walleye. I have greater success with the small Gulp bait, but find that fish occassionally prefer the live bait.

I use Fireline Crystal and love it. If the fish seem very picky, I will tie a few feet of mono or flourocarbon at the end of the fireline. Fireline stays straight and good hooksets. Fireline will ice up more if using outside of a house though.

I own a an Arctic Armor suit that I have used in the spring fishing in the rain and all winter last year. I love my suit. Keeps me warm and dry, is not bulky and floats if I take a plunge. I have not tried the other suits and have no reason to at this point.
