March 31, 2013 at 1:46 pm #1157801In order to qualify for a Wisconsin DNR waterways access grant you have to establish launch fees to show you can maintain them…however WI does not require canoe registration, or kayak, or portable fish shacks, or boat trailers under certain GW…
March 11, 2013 at 6:30 pm #1150890About 30-40k just to seal coat, thats one landing..I’ve only beem Mayor for less than a year so yes I still have alot to learn. This has been on posted committee agendas, discussed at the last council meeting, still no matter what is on the agendas no one comes to the meetings…we haven’t had the local paper reporter show up at the last three council meetings. Haven’t had any interest at all until I e-mailed the proposal to the local DNR office..that apparently got the ball rolling. We can’t continue to borrow for improvement projects..at least in my early opinion as mayor..I feel if you can’t pay for it don’t have it..especially since you cannot raise the levy, which isn’t all that bad I guess for the local tax payer. Yes I buy park stickers, pay lauch fees when I travel elsewhere, and I am glad to pay for the thing I love to do which is fish..fish..and fish some more. I have learned not to rely on other people to get the word out after this ..like I said I am learning on the fly and will try to do the best job I can for the local tax payer and vistor alike.
March 9, 2013 at 8:29 pm #1150203Promise last post about this, like I said, to easy to push the send button when you get pissed, I apologize about the rude , ignorant thing, and I do have to keep the best interest of the 850 Alma residents at heart. And state statutes require that it is used for improvement and maintenance.
March 9, 2013 at 3:25 pm #1150138This will be my last post, way to easy to bash someone push the button and send, and your screen name pops up…must be my age but have never been a fan of social media. I guess thats wy I retired from law enforcement, sick of dealing with rude, biased , and ignorant of the facts people. Should have thought about that before I talked into becoming mayor.
Receipt will come from the envelope and put on the dash like most other launch sites, seasonal will be like a handicapped placard you can put on the dash or hang. Can use the same pass for more than one vehicle if you tow with more than one. Don’t like the stickers, a pain if you trade vehicles or boats. Anyone with questions feel free to call my home number in the book or contact city hall.
March 8, 2013 at 8:09 pm #1149887I think serving on government boards or commitees should be like jury duty, everyone gets their chance, and I think sitting around that table making decissions would change alot of peoples minds about how easy it is. And by the way I get all this grief for $1600 bucks, thats right a 1600 a year.We hope to have everything in place by May 1. Alot of improvement ideas have been discussed. Fish cleaning station at the south landing, refurbishing the old ramp which is better in high water, and an areator system to keep the south launch free of ice. Can’t promise all this will occur but it is my dream for the future. All this costs money which we right now can’t afford. Thanks to those that have posted positive or constructive ideas. Not the bashing.
March 7, 2013 at 7:49 pm #1117373Thanks for the dialogue…but it is time to get ready for a meeting…and a passing thought..this does not target just fishermen…if any of you are familiar with our marina ramp on pool 4 in the summer it is jammed with all types of watercraft…many of which do use the downtown facility. Hope to see some of you tonight .. stop by and introduce yourself.
March 7, 2013 at 5:50 pm #1149451proposed fee is $5 daily, 30 for annual pass for city residents, 45 for non resients, that may be high but it is a starting point. Fountain City is $3 daily, 25 fo.r a seasonal. Not familiar with how Minnesota operates. I fish up north around Lake Superior and it varies from 5 for private launchs to $13 with $7 the normal amount for munipally ran launchs. Its getting to be very commonplace. I do believe most private launchs on the river are around $7.
March 7, 2013 at 12:55 pm #1149338Yes I have taken alll of that into consideration. It will have more of a negative impact if we have to remove docks because of lack of maintenance. Inability of the public to access downtown from the river would be devastating. And we do and will continue to use our heavy equipment to remove ice from the pool 5 landing when conditions alow. Usually by mid February.
March 7, 2013 at 11:13 am #1149313For those that do not know me I am an avid outdoor enthusiast, walleye fishermen, retired law enforcement and now serve as mayor for the City of Alma, population 850. I have introduced this launch fee proposal to create revenue to be used entirely to keep our launch facilities in good repair, and to have the ability to make improvements. We operate and maintain 3 facilities, two on pool 4 and one on pool 5, and a dock below the dam that accesses downtown. All landings have access to bathroom facilities. With the inability of local units of government to raise the levy to create more revenue cuts have to be made and revenue generated where it can be. None of us want to see our recreation suffer. Cuts have been made to City Hall hours, city worker not replaced, roads not repaired, etc. To give a comparison, our entire sreet repair and improvement budget is 60,000. * 8 years ago the last time the downtown dock was refurbished it cost the tax payers of Alma 40,000
I do not want to see our docks go away, pot holes in our ramps, and recreation programs cut. It costs money to run a city and these days it is not easy. This is not a general fund money maker it is trying to keep and improve on what we have so we do not lose it. Alma is a small city without alot of tax base We do well to have good facilities and I intend to keep them that way. Thanks and please come to the meeting tonight it interested.
